They used to happen at the Classic Rock bar on Ecclesall Rd. (opposite the Brewery/Waitrose) but I think that a boom in business has made scheduling a bit of a headache. Perhaps a few people could get together and form a "meet/p*** up committee" ?

I'd agree with deejay there. I've only been to one and had a good night. We started at Fagans which was kinda a good choice as its small so you can pick people out a bit easier. Problem may be that not everyone turns up, chicken out or doesn't realise at first there are other 'SFers' in the pub (and I speak from experience..)

Spice is that a club where you have to pay an annual membership, then pay for a organised event, eg. bowling!
Not knocking bowling but I just want to get dressed up, get blathered (occasionally), dance my socks off - poss, then eat a fab bag of chips, etc.

On the other hand I would like to meet a chum to have coffee and chats.

Pm, females up for it!

Erm, apart from the usual parties and nights out, yes.

And you've a better chance of finding somebody with common interests if you're doing something, erm... interesting.

Unless, of course, you only like going out and getting 'blathered'. But so do many others.

I was only trying to help.

Hi all,

... some suggestions and an offer...

I've found the best way to organise events is for someone to take the role of leader and put out an invitation to others. If you try to get all democratic about organising things, you're sure not to please someone. For example if you have 10 people who'd like go out next weekend and 2 can't make Friday and 3 others can't make Saturday, you go out Friday meaning just 2 can't make it. Not everybody's happy, but most are. It's annoying to those who voted and didn't get their way, but that's democracy.

It's even more complicated to get agreement on a meeting place. There are just so many more choices. People with strong opinions can't see why others don't see the "obvious" sense in going to a particular place, and as organiser you end up being piggy in the middle in a discussion which puts the brakes on anything actually happening.

I have started a network of clubs in Sheffield which you can join free of charge. For Social meetups in public places there is no charge. To book premium events in the future there will be a membership charge and event fee, but if you choose to remain a guest and just book on social events for free, that's fine.

I am an ex Spice member and what I am doing has been described as a copy of what they are doing, but there are many influences on what I have set up including Nexus (no website as far as I know), www.meetup.com, plus many other American sites and commercial UK adventure clubs. If you use Google and do a few basic searches, you'll come up with a lot of options. The difference between www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk and others is that the network is not a franchise, you can choose to be an event organiser and make things happen and membership is optional.

I'm mid 40's and have just organised my first "Friday Night Mixer". A dozen people turned up, we had a chat, found some common ground, planned some future events and hopefully got the ball rolling on something good for Sheffield.

If you'd like to be an organiser for a 20's and 30's group, and set the agenda for a more exciting social life, let me know and I'll set this up for you. You'll need to be confident and have the time to take phone calls and welcome everyone. (You can't do everything online and you can't select members like you select personal friends, so this won't suit everyone). My guess is you'll need to promote your club outside of the Forum as well. As big as the Forum is there are only so many people that want to do stuff "offline". You can get free listings in local newspapers and magazines. More on this at http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23867

... and if you'd like to come along to the events I organise (mainly 30's to 50's) check out the website. I also organise a badminton club on Wednesday evening to which all ages are welcome (I think the current age range of regulars is from 25 to 60+)

Cheers,

Ken

If you can get enough girls to match the amount of guys I'd go.

But from you lot the chances of that would be very slim lol.

I'd be happy to help organising forum meets - it'd be fun to meet some of you guys & nice to give something back to the forum. Will PM Deejay & Geoff & see if we can get something off the ground.

I have been to one meet up (If you can call it that!), and missed a couple of other due to other commitments. Wouldn't mind going to another one, so if anyone would like to sort something out, then I wouldn't mind tagging along.

Maybe people would like to name a couple of dates, and see what the response is? I.e. Friday 21 or 28 January or Saturday 22 or 29 January?

Why don't you all come down to the CRB this Sunday afternoon from 3pm? We have a band called Leather Zoo starting at about 9pm, so there's all afternoon to get together and put names to faces.

Real ale - £1.50 per pint, bottles from £1.

Soz, Strix.

Just getting a bit tried of potatoe chips, all the carbs are making me moody. I do have many hobbies eg. ditial mixing, boarding and fell walking, which I enjoy doing alone. But also like eating out, going to the pictures and going to clubs, social politics and seening live bands.

Thanks for the thread.

Classic Rock
19-01-2005, 15:33
The Classic Rock Bar is quiet on a Sunday afternoon through to about 7.30pm, ideal if you want to chat. I thought it would be good to keep the meets 'in-house' so to speak so the community spirit is there and the venue is an active contributor to the site. A large chunk of you regularly come to the CRB anyway, may be good to co-ordinate you all at the same time, perhaps.

Up to you guys....

Hi all,

sometime very soon, i'm gonna put up a monthly bowling event on www.spinac.com I don't see this as competing with anything that's happening on the forum, or at CRB but complementary.

As I'm in my 40's I'd aim this at 30's to 50's, but I guess you guys are 20's and 30's and would prefer an event aimed specifically at a younger group. (Although I've had my wrist slapped for suggesting such a thing before - my badminton group now has all ages from 19 to 62 and that's going from strength to strength - 14 people tonight - thanks Scott for putting me right on ages!).

If anyone would like to use my site to publicise sports and social events, you'd be doing me a favour in testing out the software I'm developing and hopefully i'd be doing you a favour in helping to make your events succesful.

In my experience predictability is the key -
eg put out an invite to go to Hollywood Bowl at Centertainment at 8pm first tuesday each month and advertise in local free listings as well as on the Forum. worth trying?

and how about pool Jamie, every third thursday? RSVP? Graduate? Old Monk? Does CRB have a pool table?

Hi kd,

I haven't been to the Forum on Fridays, but I reckon this would be an excellent venue so long as don't crank up the volume and make it difficult for people to talk and get to know each other. Now I know I ain't just showing my age here as I've spoken to people younger than me (44) who agree that when you're getting to know someone new, you've got to be able to hear each other speak without saying "eh? and you what?" all the time.

It's different when you're with a group of mates going to the nightclub - you're already in-tune with each other and have probably already caught up with all your latest news. If you don't really know your drinking partner then eyeing up someone you fancy is a little less fun. How would they respond if you nudged them in the side and nodded towards that bit of hot stuff that just walked by?

Bottom line is I reckon the Forum is a great place to start and you can take things from there ... (what is it like on Fridays?)

For purely social get togethers like this (not activity based like bowling or pool), I think it's best to target an age range (20's and 30's to have their own event coordinator separate from say 40's and 50's) What do you think?

If I posted an event on my site and referred any enquirers to yourself, would you answer any queries by phone, or just by postings in this discussion? How would we know who was who on first meet?

Would you be happy to coordinate a group that included 40's and 50's? or would you prefer to refer them back to my group?

Bowling for all ....

Tuesday 8th Feb 8pm

Hollywood Bowl (Centertainment)

I've reserved 2 lanes for 8 people in all - 2 games

PM me to reserve place, more details on www.SpurIntoAction.co.uk

Deejaay,

We could make it a monthly thing and could meet up on the 18th March.

Put a quid on for me (perf on the rabbit) and I'll collect the winning on the 18th March.

ALL,

Yep Forum good place to start, at 8pm not too busy / loud for drink and chat.
Few resturants for food / more chat near by if req.
Club after for all intrested, not chat - just drink.
