View Full Version : Bilberries - help!
aussie80 29-09-2007, 12:34 Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere in Sheffield I can buy a bilberry pie? I know they're not in season anymore but surely somewhere must sell bilberry frozen pies?
Please help as we're trying to find one for a present for a relative that hasn't had one in years and absolutely loves them.
Thanks
used to be able to buy billberries in jars in the markets, and I'v also seen em in the grocery shop at Crosspool.
Thorpist 29-09-2007, 12:53 A Blackberry pie with freshly picked picked berries is a far better treat than a jar of bilberries and they are in season now.
Dizzyblonde 29-09-2007, 12:55 Billberries grown above a certain number of feet, where you find heather. go look in the peak district.

Someone else with a bilberry pie addiction! They sometimes have them in Cooplands but they are hard to find. The fresh ones are in season right now and if you can find them you can eke them out with a few apples to make a pie.
Season is just about over, be slim pickings indeed now. You'd do well to get enough for a tart
BorderReiver 29-09-2007, 15:51 Bilberries went out of season a few weeks ago - so don't waste your time looking for them.
I picked some near Grenoside early in August and made two beautiful crumbles - they really do make the tastiest pies
I've never seen them in the shops so I think you'll be out of luck
Morrisons also use to(still?) sell em in jars

We've still got some on the moors near us, maybe the bad summer has made them later than usual, they shouldn't really be around in October I admit.

i saw that page on wiki, but also looked at blueberry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueberry
if you look at the list of types of blueberry the bilberry species isn't there. perhaps we are comming across one of the problems with wiki!

Wouldn't agree there Thorpist. Bilberries make a fantastic crumble, possibly the best of all and they are ready to be picked NOW
