When a couple decides to make a lifetime committment or gets married, do you feel they should join their income as well, or do you feel it should remain separate?

What working for you?

For those that keep it separate, do you feel there is a trust thing of some sort that preventing you from having joint finances?

we have a joint account into which we pay a fixed amount and from which all the bills go.
We keep our own accounts though since we both earn our own money and choose to spend our surplus in our own way.

Same as Cyclone...bills account we both pay into, then our own accounts for wages etc. Trust is a huge part of it since one of you could end up in massive debt without the other knowing until it's too late.
Best thing I like about it is being able to save up and buy her a huge pressy without her knowing... (although she thinks I'm being a tight a**e for the 2 months before hand lol)

My wage goes in the bank.
My other half`s wages go in the bank.
We have one account and we use what we need as a couple.
Works for us.

That works for us as well Viking, and has done for 20 odd years, but some friends of ours were horrified that we both knew exactly how much the other earns, and their system has worked for over 30 years.
I guess whatever works for the individual is fine so long as your happy with it.

Both our wages go into our own current accounts, but we also have a joint account to deliver unspent cash, overtime payments etc

We both have ISAs, too which we top up when we can.

The two ISas have exactly the same amount in each, and both my wife and I would never touch our own ISAs without joint consultation.

That seems like the best way. That way the woman has to pay her fair share of the bills and can only waste her OWN money on shopping all the time. :hihi:

We do the same, and the amounts we pay are proportional. Then the rest is ours to do what we will with in our own accounts.
