Hi,
Does anyone know when/how often the general insurance council update thier records and adjust premiums from the stats ? I guess they take into account the recorded figers from the police force etc, would this happen annually ?

Reason I ask is when I have been getting online quotes my post code returns a quote of almost £440 more than one less than 5 mins walk away! (both S5 codes, all quotes same, only post code changed) Seems a large amount and its the same with all the big companys (churchill, direct line, tesco etc)

Don't get me started on those robbin' gets.

I think I started a thread for ranting on just before Christmas when we renewed.

Apparently I'm more of a risk if I'm not married to Mr. Strix, although we've been together for 12 years. How does that affect my driving?

I daren't answer that :hihi:

Penguin I had the same problem when I lived at my parents on Parson Cross, I was led to believe I lived on the dodgy part of the estate and that warrented a £730 quote. A quote for a post 2 mins down the road (classed as Ecclesfield) was £300 less

I would guess they do it at the beginning of each financial year?? As with the post code things it just how they manage the 'risk' - its crap but its jus the way it works :(

HMMMMM, don't get me started either. I couple of years ago I had my full no claims discount due..........what happens??? By coincidence my payments remain the same as crime went up by exactly the same percentage in my postcode.

How bizarre!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your replys guys, I tried the link pj66, but it was more expensive than the current lowest I have got, that is with Direct Line. I sent an e-mail to Direct Line asking if my a 5 mins walk warrants an extra £400 premium, and have a reply with what he says is a priority number as the web sites only deals with general enquires, so maybe a little hope still to get it lower.

Had a look at that site. Any idea why they have this condition on their disclaimer:

neither I nor any additional driver have a part-time occupation, whether or not this is in addition to a full-time occupation.

If your main job is a "low risk" occupation, then the quote will be based on that. If you work part time in another job, which is higher risk, then the insurance would cost more. The website probably can't deal with situations where people have more than one occupation.

Penquin I got my car insurance in November from www.its4me.co.uk my quote was over £60 cheaper than my renewal quote from Churchill - the only difference was I had a zero voluntary excess on Churchill but a £125 or £150 (can't remember which without looking) on this one. Worth a try anyway. I only found them by doing a google search on car insurance. All the rest came out to a similar price to Churchill.

i found that if you don't like your renewal quote (mine from Norwich Union) then phone up and tell them you can get it cheaper.

They will fall over themselves to lower the quote.
Which reminds me, to keep me with them they offered me a rebate cheque one month after confirming to stay, and i haven't had it, i think i'll give them a call.

Try Tesco's insurance, my Daughter save over £100 and sorted it on line.

I've just renewed mine and found Norwich Union (apparently i was with them last year) to be the cheapest for me. Though i did find that if i did online and then rang the quotes were different. Dead annoying.

I used to work for one of the big direct insurance companies in Sheffield until about 3 years ago. While I worked there, they stopped recording the occupation of drivers on policies unless they were a professional driver, or if they were famous / actor / sportsperson / author etc. I guess the clause is in case you work full time in Tesco, but part time in Hollywood! :)

With regards to the rate increases, they were done on a monthly basis.

It's not just the crime in the area that affects the rates; the underwriters will also look at how likely the residents are to make a claim for crash damage etc. They even look at how likely it is to have your car bumped while parked on a particular road, so expect a higher rate if you live on a narrow crime-free road!
