Nigel Womersle 28-09-2007, 08:14 Try "One Stop" under the railway arch in Chapeltown. Pat - Went in there when it was a health food shop. When the train went overhead, all the boxes on the shelves began dancing at the same time. Deerobe 28-09-2007, 08:28 There is a computer shop in Firth Park on Stubbin Lane. It is privately run and sells all sorts of goodies. Good sound advice can be found here also. JEC1 28-09-2007, 09:59 Whats up with the PC? Starts booting up, whirrs a bit then stops. Yes, I can thoroughly recommend them, too - they are very good at coping with non-techno females who gibber at them. The one in Chapeltown, under the railway arches, is the same company, I believe. My mate bought a pc off them made to order. it kept going off, turned out they put the wrong size fan on it and after he told them after he had paid someone to look at it privatley they agrred it was a mistake and promply charged him to put on the right sized fan ! satman2222 29-09-2007, 20:17 BS Computers Ltd 180 Main Road Darnall Sheffield S9 5HQ South Yorkshire Tel: 0114 249 4324 :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: Dizzyblonde 29-09-2007, 20:46 If your pc does not just whirrs and does not boot, you could try reseating the memory. Whirrs but does not boot can be memory, mainboard or processor, so depending on age of computer, it might be a replacement that is needed. nobby71 29-09-2007, 21:06 Have you checked the hard drive? r0b1n 29-09-2007, 21:13 Hey, If u need some help, give me a PM, im a computer tech & web designer. SV500 30-09-2007, 18:26 wow great thread :D sounds like the fan giving up the ghost, but do as said .. unplug from the mains and give the cards inside a good jiggle as they can come loose, theres also "smiths" at the back of the arena, part of the scrap yard,i got my current monitor from there £15 and its still ok several years later, JASON.. Rich 30-09-2007, 18:55 There's a place on Halifax Road at Wadsley Bridge called PC Medics that are allegedly decent. I personally wouldn't trust these small shops though, too many of them are run by Cowboys whose companies go bust leaving you with duff kit, and no means of getting it repaired, other than perhaps using the likes of PC World. And no, PCW do not suck before anyone even goes there. punk 30-09-2007, 19:11 And no, PCW do not suck before anyone even goes there. Yes they do: over priced, don't care about anything but the sale and will tell you anything to achieve a sale, terrible service (except when they are trying to sell you something), will try every trick in the book not to honour garuntees or even abide to the sale of goods act, sales people who (mostly) don't have a clue what they are talking about, don't reply to emails or letters (although the phone service is generally ok), more interested in selling extended garuntees than selling computer gear and, a critisim you could apply to most national stores; they don't give a crap if they get bad reputation from you as it will hardly hurt their sales. I'd avoid all the DSG stores like the plague. At least if you go to a well known (and recommended) small retailer they care about the customer and usually give you good service and of course you're also supporting local business. Deerobe 30-09-2007, 19:18 Starts booting up, whirrs a bit then stops. And it won't go any further, screen won't come on or anything. Sounds like duff memory to me. If you have an Athlon processor it will give a beep signal if the memory is duff but Pentiums do nothing other than what you describe. medusa 30-09-2007, 19:31 There is us, We're in Hillsborough I'd recommend VeryPC (and I don't work their either!). They inspected and repaired my laptop for a massive £90 less than PCWorld quoted me for just taking the cover off and having a look. MuTuO 06-10-2007, 16:04 I am a university student and can do repairs. If you need more help i am available. MuTuO sallonoroff 07-10-2007, 18:06  hello... . Sorry but I have to disagree to a point here.... After having several "bargain PC's" of allegedly high spec from some of the local small firms mentioned on this thread, (usually AMD's) I found they lasted an average of 12-18 months before they expired. At the time I was on low income, so was on a budget. Now I'm not and can afford to shop at PCWorld, and to be quite fair to them, they give good service, AND their stuff is reliable. It could be that as I have moved away from AMD to Intel that the performance has improved, however the small firms are just as expensive as PCWorld if you are buying Intel. punk: You ARE right about them (PCW) being more interested in extended warranties tho, but when I go there I point out immediately that I'm not interested in it BEFORE the purchase, that way I buy my goods and leave without being asked to "have a chat" at that table ;-) scottishdude 08-10-2007, 19:45 Yes they do: over priced, don't care about anything but the sale and will tell you anything to achieve a sale, terrible service (except when they are trying to sell you something), will try every trick in the book not to honour garuntees or even abide to the sale of goods act, sales people who (mostly) don't have a clue what they are talking about, don't reply to emails or letters (although the phone service is generally ok), more interested in selling extended garuntees than selling computer gear and, a critisim you could apply to most national stores; they don't give a crap if they get bad reputation from you as it will hardly hurt their sales. Totally agree, Have you seen the latest PCW ad for laptop? "and for £29.99 our tech boys can transfer your pics and music from your old pc to your new laptop" Any numpty with an external H/drive could do that. Anyways, PC Medics on Halifax is a good little shop. suzieq 08-10-2007, 20:33 One Stop at firth park, always honest, fair and reasonably priced Not a shop run by `cowboys' and not likely to be disappearing overnight..I've been a customer there for the last 9 years. suzie |
