View Full Version : Best Boyband ( lighthearted poll )
Which is the best boyband in your opinion to have graced us with their music . . or someone elses music :hihi:
It has to be a lighthearted because - who?? . . other than 12 year olds can take any boyband seriously. . . other than the Beatles obviously.
Why have you put the Beatles in there in the first place :suspect:
Dee :P
because I just want to gauge the response from the crazed fans nowadays with the response from the old faithfulls. Just thought it'd be a laugh because I know for sure Beatles will win hands down.
Unless we're proven wrong!:o

I await the wrath :suspect:
sparklesista 15-01-2005, 19:14 Well, I have to admit that I voted for Backstreet Boys!
I can't really vote for Beatles however good they were coz it was well before my time and too be honest I don't know many of their songs :?
Backstreet Boys are my fave out of the lot coz they had the fittest band members and some of their songs were great... well when I was 12 anyway! :D
sparklesista 15-01-2005, 19:15 This may sound worse but when I was about 10/11 yrs old, I used to love East 17 - now why aren't they in the list? :o :P

I knew it!!:P
I could have gone on & on with the list but I only picked the ones I thought were actual popular boybands people would know. I know there were loads of others like Johnny hates jazz, 3T, Yell, the ones who sang . . 'Crazy, Craaaazy for you! & theres nuthin that I wont do' forget their name. But you gotta stop somewhere.
limpetboy 15-01-2005, 22:49 Voted for Busted, purely cos one of them once said, with straight face, that he was getting fed up of women shoving there tits in his face to sign. Now that takes talent.
How can I be the only one to have voted so far for New Kids On the Block???!! There is something wrong in the world.
Although, perhaps shouldn't be too suprised as I picked up their, ahem, Greatest Hits for a mere four english pounds in HMV...

Ah... East 17. Perhaps THE most unattractive boyband to ever grace the earth...
PS I think my Dad, and countless other men, would be really upset at the idea of the Beatles being described as a boyband. It is more than a little unfair. Yes, they were indeed "boys in a band" and had legions of screaming girly fans. So did Elvis, but you wouldn't put him and someone like, say G-G-Gareth Gates in the same league would you?
i will never class beatles as a boyband so i voted for take that.
but what about jackson 5 ?????? best by far!!!
and i suppose the osmands should be there as well.
recipe for a boyband......4 or 5 lads....ages from 15-22....lots of hand movements to camera and act as if your black (if your white) lift your shirt up a little bit when singing. start singing on stools then stand when it hits the chorus. deny gay claims. deny split. claim your not like other boybands and dont wish to be called a boyband. last 2 albums. 2 tours. 1 story of punch up or kiss and tell. split up. 1 of you go solo. get a few hits. then end up working at butlins as a redcoat.
:D

Not exactly boybands though . . . Boys + Band = boyband.

Oh yes, I think it was the eyebrow piercing that did it.
Moon Maiden 17-01-2005, 11:42 Despite my obsessiveness over NKOTB...the one and only boyband who will never be beaten HAS to be The Beatles....just no competition I am afraid.
Moon
I don't think the Beatles should be in the list, a boyband is a low-talent, style-over-substance creation designed to last for about 4 years at the most, the Beatles certainly wern't that.
Yea beatles aren't 'boyband' per se that's like saying any youngish band of young blokies are boybands! (erm which strictly i guess they are! but not in a boyband sense - i'll shut up now - u know what i mean :D )
erm but 'Take That' are the only 'boyband' that i thought were any good - although don't McFly play instruments etc *yawn*
Moon Maiden 17-01-2005, 12:14 The Beatles are always referred to as the first boyband.
Moon
My younger brother was unfortunate enough to be in his formative years when boybands were all the rage and there seemed to be a new crop every week.
The one band that always made me laugh were A1. Not only were they named after one of the nation's premier trunkroads, they were also the squattest group ever to mime on tv! Every one of them looked so short and stocky that I always thought of them as the high-gravity boyband...it was as though they grew up on an alien world where the gravity was so strong that their bodies had been forced to bear all that weight!
And they were ****.

I thought the main requirement for a boyband was that they didn't write their own material??
Hence the Beatles and indie bands, for example, are not eligible for the dubious honour of being best boyband?
Or does that rule out Take That? :suspect: But then they did lots of cover versions, didn't they, and that's VERY boyband.
Anyway - leaving out the Beatles, Take That have got to be best boyband ever. They actually had talent and charisma, and were simply the best at what they did. (Not that I'm a fan or anything!! :o )

lol, New Kids on the Block's greatest hits for £4 - whats that, £1 a song?! :D
Take That are the less offensive (in terms of their attitude and songs) because at least they ahd some variation to their songs.
I'd have made them pay me at least a tenner to take NKOTB off their hands...custom made frisbees and coasters are so cheap these days.
Pauline BHG 17-01-2005, 21:48 Are you all mad/deaf/insane ??? TAKE THAT were by FAR the best boyband - EVER !!! ;-)

Pauline BHG 17-01-2005, 23:25 aye - so you did !! I must've missed yer post ;-) I was getting sooooooooo stressed that TT weren't winning, I jumped the gun a little hehehehehhehe
Can anyone remember the name of the boyband that sang the lyrics:
'Crazy, crazy for you! and theres nuthin' that I wont do / caught by the look in your eyes / and it's all for the love of you'.
Ever since I mentioned it - it's been going round in my head but I cant remember who sang it, the lead singer was tall, thin and had blonde hair . . . i think.
Gotta agree that The Beatles were the first "boy band". However, Lennon and McCartney had/have more talent in their little fingers than all the other boy bands put together! Thank god they're winning in the poll. I'd have to leave this country if they weren't!

miniminch 18-01-2005, 16:23 The best boy band were the little known littlehampton brace - 12. Originally called 13 until Lee 13, the spikey haired one, got his underpants caught in a hydraullic stage equipement during a Birmingham gig and was catapulted out of the arena, to the considerable horror of their teenage audience. His eyebrow stud was found in Lemington Spar and one of his legs was found in Bedworth.
Rumour has it, the leg was still doing his trade mark dance 13 hours after they found it. And on a fansite they even claim that he staged his death to get out of a water tight contract and there are reports that he was seen hopping out of poundland on the Dudley high street.
The rest went on to minor sucess, being the first boy band to shun the 'mainstrean' route of their contempories such as Take That and Boyzone.
Their cheeky take on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's 'The Cancer Ward', was seen by many as a step too far for a boy band, and the growing of long straggley beards and their constant swearing and belching on stage was thought by some as an unsavoury image for their delicate teen fanbase. The final nail in the coffin came when one of the number 'Roy 12, the 'mad' one 'came out.' And revealled that he was, in fact, a 45 year old civil servant from essex. stating 'I just can't do this anymore.'
However, they will still be remebered for the hits 'Let's Party on a Saturday Night', and '12 are going to get you moving on the dancefloor this weekend, yeah thats right' which both charted ironically in the mid-forties.
The reason I think they were the best is, they were not just a boy band, people like Thom Yorke have sited them as inpiration. They went further than most putting the music first and the screaming adulation of millions of potential fans second. I give you 12!

Erm... I don't believe I ever said, in anyway, that Elvis or G-G-gareth Gates was a boy band. I was merely pointing out that by labelling The Beatles as a boy band, in the same category as Take That, New Kids etc... is like putting Elvis in the same category as Gareth Gates.
I believe if you go back and read my post you will find this to be true. :P
hey da bouncer, aint busted split up now? so technically they aint a band any more!!!lol
y nearth r the beatles winnin?
i dont no y evr1 raves bout them coz they r crap
busted r the best by far!!!!!!!!!!!!
Were BROS a boy band? They'd get my vote any day. Go BROS!
I've found this thread by searching for something totally not on the subject of boybands!
Anyway!
I think I've liked every boyband going and still do.
I'd say The Beatles were a boyband - boyband in my terms being a group of young guys making POP music aimed at young girls. It's only because there's this stereotypical image of 5 prats dancing like idiots and miming that people disagree on what exactly a boyband is - not that I'm saying that my definition is the true meaning...
The 80's and 90's brought us some of the cheesiest boybands that make us think of the crap group image.
I love Take That cos I grew up listening to them constantly, and I do actually think the songs are ace - I still listen to them now.
I did like a1, for some reason. A couple of their songs I still think are good/ok and listen to 1 or 2 of them...
Then there was Busted - I laughed at them the very first time I saw them, which was at Leeds Party In The Park and they got bottled, well, they were dressed in school uniform and singing about school (you can't hear the lyrics at those things!)... But they have become one of my favourite bands - admittedly they are immature; I prefer their music to the lyrics and there are some great songs on their albums. They're lovely guys too - they always cracked me up on tv and I've met them a few times and they've been really nice too.
Now it's McFly. Maybe I'll look back on this and think, what was I on about, but I really do think they're amazing - especially after hearing their new album. I refused to become a fan of theirs seeing as the record company were promoting them off the back of Busted but I found their first song really catchy and started liking them more and more... I saw them on tv a couple of weeks before their single was released and I thought they seemed like really genuine down to earth guys, and a week later I met them - and they are, they're lovely. So, admittedly, part of their appeal was their personalities, but I also like the fact they brought back the 60's style music and introduced it to younger people, who often turn their noses up at The Beach Boys and The Beatles etc. Looking back on a year ago, I'm wondering why I liked them, considering I LOVE their new album - they've matured so much and, as strange as it might sound, I'm very proud of them. I think, as with Busted, last year I liked McFly's music and them more than their lyrics, and this year, I like all three, which is what makes me so proud of them, especially as they're the same age as me, for some reason.
Sorry for the ramble, but I couldn't resist posting as boy bands are my hobby!
SpiderPete 30-08-2005, 23:09 :o I must have missed this poll on my searches
Anyway ... shame to admit it but Backstreet Boys
edit : did anyone spot the mistake
BEATLES!!!!!!!
No contest :)
muddycoffee 01-11-2007, 23:24 Er, Beatles? Boyband? Spare me.....,
They are the only one who are actually a band. The rest of them mime to backing tracks and can't play anything.
I think they should call them youth choirs or something.
NEKRO138 02-11-2007, 10:29 y nearth r the beatles winnin?

The Beatles are winning because they managed to write catchy tunes using the english language.
Whereas Busted appealed more to a generation of dim witted kids who lost the ability to use the language and resorted to posting on internet forums in text messaging slang.
leviathan13 02-11-2007, 13:19 I voted for The Beatles cos all the others suck, too manufactured.
The Beatles were "manufactured" originally, in my opinion. But even though I really don't like them, I'd have to choose them out of the rest of what's up there.
Anyone who wants to be in a boyband must be executed!
leviathan13 02-11-2007, 13:26 Sorry for the ramble, but I couldn't resist posting as boy bands are my hobby!
Have you got any other hobbies?
Is it just boybands or do you know there is a music world outside of this genre? You know, with bands who actually write their own songs and music, sing their own lyrics and and can actually play more than three chords on a guitar or play drum fills.
There are way better songwriters and musicians out there my dear, please just look beyond the hype of what's in the charts. :)
muddycoffee 02-11-2007, 13:38 The Beatles were "manufactured" originally, in my opinion. But even though I really don't like them, I'd have to choose them out of the rest of what's up there.
No they weren't.
They came across each other when they were kids in Liverpool.
Paul McCartney famously first met John Lennon when his band The Quarrymen were playing skiffle songs at a church fate.
That day was probably the greatest day for English Pop Music ever.
Are you sure that you are not mixing up the Beatles with the Monkeys?

Then someone came along, from a record company, said "If you do it this way and do as I say, I'll make you rich and famous" and hey presto... the rest is history. They were marketed in much the same way as todays "manufactured" boybands, they just happened to play their own instruments.

...and write their own songs. Every band is managed, it doesn't make them a boyband.

I know that you are very young but you do seem to have a shaky idea bout what a manufactured group is.
A manufactured group is where a svengali character finds all the members, gives them a name, gives them the songs and tells them what to sing.
A real band (Beatles, Oasis, Metallica, AC/DC)is where the musicians can actually play instruments. They find each other themselves, write their own music or choose what covers to sing.
Who manages them has nothing to do with it. Real bands emerge organically, often by people who have known each other by playing in other bands, the core of the band normally comes from a single city or town where they are often part of a local music scene.
A manufactured band is the vision of a company or individual who chooses the members himself and tells them what to do from the start, the purpose of the excersise is only to make money.

I'm very sorry, old person, I bow to your obviously infinite wisdom of all things musical!
All I was trying to get at is that the Beatles, at first, weren't this all powerful musical force that unleashed their idea of a music scene on to the public. They will have had huge record company influence showing them down the road to riches, making themselves and the band very wealthy. They had fans with the attitude that the band were pin-ups with a squeaky clean image, a la modern day boybands, and they played simple 3-4 minute pop songs, like Busted/McFly etc. They have many similarities with the modern day boyband.
And, as I did state, quite clearly, it was just my opinion.
Please don't patronise me, it will come back to bite you at some point in your life.
Have a nice day now.
Why isn't Five in the list ?
BasilRathbon 02-11-2007, 18:08 Likewise The Rubettes?
funkymiss 02-11-2007, 18:46 Why isn't Five in the list ?
Exactly my thoughts! They were by far the best!
EdnaKrabappe 02-11-2007, 18:57 My definition of a boyband:
a) The songs have a key change for the final chorus.
b) They own stools which they get up from on the key change.
c) One member is only there to up the prettiness stakes.
therefore according to this, Take that are a boyband.
I liked Bros - still think when will i be famous is a cracking little pop song. I liked Brother Beyond, spent my seventeenth birthday watching them and screaming at Nathan and I liked Curiosity killed the cat . And then there was Aha with the wonderous Morten. And Wham. And Duran Duran but that was more as i got older.
The modern ones, I don't like anyone who owns stools but i'll admit to liking McFly - esp obviously, and all about you, and five colours in her hair. I've never really liked Take That but Westlife and Boyzone really used to irritate me.
Surprised noone has mentioned One True Voice? :o:hihi:
