Hi my great nannan 85 years was recently diagnosed with alzheimers and every day seems to be getting worse. My nannan is struggling to care for her on her own and is slowly developing alzheimers her self at 69 years. My nannan has been in touch with social services who put my great nannan in a care home for 2 weeks to try and help reduce the stress and pressure my nannan, but now my great nannan is out, my nannan can see no light at the end of the tunnel.
My nannan has been given a allowance to get a part time carer to share responsabilities with her but my nannan needs somebody she can trust and does not know where to start looking.
Does anybody have any information of carers in South Yorkshire that could help please???
Thanks for reading
I'd contact either Age Concern, http://www.ageconcernsheffield.org.uk/ or Sheffield Carers (this is an organisation to help carers in Sheffield, not an agency for paid carers). http://www.sheffieldcarers.org.uk/. I'm sure one of them can offer advice. Good luck.

And maybe consider copying your post to the carers section here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=103)

The Sheffield Alzheimers society are also fantastic, as a resource.
They were fantastic when my nan was alive, (She had dementia) Their help was invaluable, and they are currently doing an ace job of supporting a friend of mine whose elderly mother was diagnosed a few months ago with Alzheimers, too.
contact details for Sheffield branch, (via phone, email or calling in) here

angelina69, I've moved your thread to the Carers Group. I hope that you can find some useful help there.

Hi Angelina,
It would be really helpful if you can say what the allowance is that your nan has, and who pays it to her. I should be able to give you a few options then, but finding good carers who you can really trust is not always as easy as people would like.

If it's from social services (and not a benefit payment) it sounds like it's a direct payment. A direct payment is where you get money from social services instead of them arranging a service for you. You spend the direct payment on organising support yourself.
The two main ways your nan would have of spending the direct payment would be a) paying a care agency to provide support to your great nan, or b) paying a person privately to support your great nan, which could be someone who she or you already know.
If she chose a), it might be an idea to start a thread on here asking for peoples' experiences of care agencies, and which seem to be the best. The main ones that I've heard people say good things about are Leonard Cheshire and Home Alternative (although neither cover the whole of Sheffield, and Home Alternative usually have a long waiting list).
If she chose b), the options are either for the person to work on a self-employed basis (I can post some links to help with this if you need), or for someone to employ them on your great nan's behalf. You can get help with setting this up from an organisation called Penderels Trust, whose contact details are here http://penderelstrust.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27 They will need confirmation that your nan is getting a direct payment before they can help.
It would be a good idea to fully check whether your nan is getting a direct payment from social services - the fact that the Department for Work and Pensions used to be called the Department for Social Security means that a lot of people understandably got confused between Social Services and Social Security! Let me know how you get on.
