I am aware of all the various open source crm packages but can anyone comment of the safest
Joomla worries me a bit - there are a lot of scare stories about it being easily hackable. One of the joomla demos has been hacked and one is offline.
I have been looking at the list at
http://www.opensourcecms.com/
any views
PS - You can PM as this is obviously a sensitive subject
Many thanks
The vbulliten forums, with the vportal addon is nice... (www.truegalaxies.com uses it, for an example)
I never had a problem with Joomla, when it was mambo, PHP nuke and Post nuke are to be avoided...
the other alternative, is to write your own, or team up with someone to write one for you.. like I did ;)
mkportal (http://www.mkportal.it) is nice, & integrates seamlessly with phpBB, IPB, vBulletin & smf, so you've got the choice of forum backends to use.

I use expression engine (www.expressionengine.com). The free "core" version is very good, and the commercial license won't break the bank if you need the extra features!
