I had the best ever pint of Ward's Kirby ale in the Red House around 17 years ago. It was a great little boozer back then and I hope it can recreate some of those former times (impromtu jams and so on).

Are you going to sell those fabulous little cheese and crackers packets with the tiny pickled onions in them? Go on, please say you are!!

This sounds good; I took part in the occasional night organised by my pal Bomar a few months ago, and I only heard from him the other day that Red House is reopening.

I'll try and drop in briefly on Tuesday, but I will be doing a show at Westway on West St., so I'll be there most of the night.

I am looking at doing a regular eclectic/alternative DJ and live performance night of my own (With lots of alternative and mainstream '60's and '70's classics). Would Red House be interested, perhaps doing it on a Sunday or Monday night?

Me and White Rose came along last night with a few mates. Arrived a bit late so we missed most of the always excellent Mojo and the Beatniks, which was a bit of a bugger, but never mind, we'll catch them again. Next time I might comb my hair out into an afro in tribute. :hihi:

The Lazy Tree Surgeons were great, and White Rose was dancing away in her cowboy hat straight away, pausing only to rectify a Janet Jackson-style wardrobe malfunction :D, when it was pointed out to her by the singer from Montuno. Who knows, maybe one of the bands will write a song about a pink and orange 38G bra?

I stayed seated through the set, as the place was rammed, and anyway, I'd decided to conserve energy and not get all hot and sweaty. How and so ever...once the Lazy Tree Surgeons had finished, everyone seemed to assume that was it, or maybe they were conscious of the late hour and had thought of work next morning. Whatever, they missed a TREAT, in the form of Montuno, who blistered the paintwork with their funky horns and the soul power belting from the small but perfectly formed er...form of singer Sandra Hennessy, the same who'd earlier pointed out White Rose's left breast's escape bid to its owner.

Just prior to the band kicking off, Matt, sorry...King Mojo, did the right ting by going round the multi-roomed pub and rousing the remaining punters to come out front and dig the band, seeing as the crowd had thinned. And dig the band they did. My 'no dancing tonight' resolve was washed away like a sandcastle by a tsunami of funk. One just had to dance, you see. The only surprise was that several people who on the face of it, are much younger and thereby ought to be more inclined to stuff their strut, were seemingly infected with leadfoot disease, and merely stood and watched. Tsk! No funk these young people.

Anyway, I was left sweaty and hot, which I'd set out not to, but I WAS A FOOL! I mean, if we'd arrived early enough to catch the beatniks, I'd probably have ended up dancing anyway. I can't help it. My will is weak.

And the pub? Great. Wychwood brewery's Hobgoblin, Adnam's Bitter and Flowers IPA on tap, well kept too. The multiple rooms have been retained, not ripped out to make a single bar, which is really refreshing to see. The bar staff are friendly, and I particularly liked the Red Room, which is done out like the drawing room at the Palace of Versailles. Or summat. I almost felt I should be wearing a powdered wig, embroidered frock coat, tight breeches and turnbuckle shoes. But then that's just me. ;)

So, King Mojo was right. For great sounds, great beer and good crack (the irish sort) get to t'Red 'ouse!

I see they have a widely varied music policy too. For instance, on Friday, when most venues are hosting DJs and dance acts, La Maison Rouge are having a Prog Rock night. Expect lots of IT technicians with bad trousers, nodding out of time to 20 minute knob-twiddling madness and guitar noodling epics. Sounds great. As I grew up in the 70s, I'm down with Prog, see? I can lie on the floor in a dark room with the best of them, listening to my Gong albums. Ace. I tells yer, Prog is making a comeback! Why, Radiohead are practically a prog band these days, but I reckon it's only a matter of time before bands start rediscovering the joys of Camel, Focus and the mighty Enid. I urge you all to go find a copy of 'In the Region of the Summer Stars' NOW! :hihi:

So. Nice evening was had by all, and my experience of Sheffield is expanded into a part of town I never even knew existed (I'm from Leeds, see). :D

There's a place called the Red House in Kotka, Finland. That's a brothel though, and supposedly owned by Russian mafia.

Great news - a new live music venue!!!

So are you wanting to book bands for gigs? And if a band wanted to enquire about about the possibility of a gig, who would they need to contact/send demo's or myspace details too?

The Red House have a myspace site- myspace.com/redhousesheffield...I was there last night and the place has been done up a treat- nice smoking terrace aswell. It has not been ruined like most pub 'makeovers'...check it out. My mate is doing a gig on the 13th (next Sat) Pete Green...get yourself down...licence til 3am.

How sound proof is the venue? I only ask because there's a lot of new residential homes which have sprung up in the area. The last thing the pub needs are noise nuisance complaints!
