View Full Version : Grenoside, High Green, Oughtibridge.
Sheilabowing 26-09-2007, 19:37 I posted a while back asking about Oughtibridge and it seems like a good place to live. But I've been looking at other places in S35 now the estate agents stuff is coming through and I wondered what these areas were like?
I'm not in a desperate hurry to move so I wantto make the right choice so any opinions, information or anything else about S35 would be really helpful if people don't mind telling me what you think?
Thank you for your time.
LOVE this site by the way!

Hi there,
well at the mo oughtibridge has got it's fair share of problems due to the Middlewood Road been washed away in june. But we've lived here for 5 yrs & before that 10 yrs in Greno. I wouldn't move out of Oughtibridge (unless we get our visa's for Aus that is:hihi:)
Yes it has it's problems but not halve as bad as Greno.
stanleeder 26-09-2007, 19:53 Of the three areas you mention I'd choose Grenoside. And I'd also add Chapeltown to your list.
silverknight 26-09-2007, 20:01 Also remember that these Northern areas of rural Sheffield also carry an extra Parish Council Tax ( Bradfield or Ecclesfield or Stocksbridge) on top of the Sheffield Council Tax
Sheilabowing 26-09-2007, 20:12 Thanks. That sounds like one for and one against Grenoside. Do you mind me asking why?
Thanks for the tip about the parish council tax silverknight. I didnt realise that. I'll have to find out how much that is.
Chapeltown looks good too. Glad to hear a positive for that one too.

Less than £1 a week on Bands C and D where I'd guess most properties in those areas will fall - not going to break the bank is it?
i grew up in grenoside and although its a lovely area i prefer chapeltown where we live now, you have everything you could ask for in chap, schools, shops, trains, buses, pubs, restaurants all within a short walking distance too

What!! I have lived in grenoside most of my life and have never had any problems at all,its a quiet part of the city which judging by the house prices is held in some quite esteem compared to oughtibridge.
Greybeard 26-09-2007, 22:23 Oughtibridge used to be nice before everyone with a decent sized garden built a house in it. :(
satman2222 26-09-2007, 22:29 The only problems in Grenoside usually come from further down the hill to the South and the South East...........

What about the kids on asbo's that have smashed up the park & car's? including the driver of 1!
As for house prices, have you looked at the prices in Oughtibridge lately?
There's loads of people move down the hill to get their kids in Bradfield too.

Very true!
If you don't mind an ex-coucil house look at S5 which includes the edge of Ecclesfield. Admittedly you would have to look around but there are some really nice people around and the houses are well built and roomy. As for Longcol, I don't know where he lives but as a single OAP I still pay £70.00 per month council tax. That does not equate to £1.00 or less a week. But I still like living in this area.

ok show me some comparisons of the prices then? But there are badly behaved kids everywhere, Unless of course there aren't any n oughtibridge??

The whole of Ecclesfield is S35 - honest.
Ms Macbeth 27-09-2007, 06:31 >snip< That does not equate to £1.00 or less a week. >snip<
The £1 a week is for the extra council tax people pay on top of their council tax in areas with Parish Councils.
satman2222 27-09-2007, 11:53 Very true!
All we need is a machine gun controlled by webcam incorporating in the new Jaguar estates building by the traffic lights. We can then pick them off as they approach before they can cause any trouble. :hihi:
jennyjenjen 16-10-2007, 10:48 i live in oughtibridge village old part its nice and close to rural walks but i dont like the housing estates .. i prefer greno ..
Sheilabowing 16-10-2007, 10:56 Thanks, Jenny. Which housing estates do you mean? We've seen a couple of houses we're interested in up there.
cuddywhite 16-10-2007, 11:11 i live in high green on the Dowlands estate which is situated nbacking on to westwood country park, it is a wonderful place to live with good schools, doctors, dentist etc all on your doorstep and it is a little cheaper and quiter than chapeltown. We once looked at moving to oughtibridge but decided against it as you couldnt get as much for your money and the facillities were not as good. hope this helps big thumbs up for high green.
We lived in Grenoside for ten years and I would love to move back. Of the three areas I think Grenoside is by far the best.
baby barrie 16-10-2007, 11:36 Of the three areas you mention I'd choose Grenoside. And I'd also add Chapeltown to your list.
chapeltown :gag:
Tintsexpert 16-10-2007, 14:59 chapeltown :gag:
Couldn't agree more:D

Yes it is nice up there - Unfortunately the council have licenced the area near Westwood dam to some radio controlled model geeks and there is the constant noise of model aircraft buzzing about!
tom_fordo 16-10-2007, 21:16 Grenoside - mean mass murder of frogs, n'est-ce pas?
pippadoll 16-10-2007, 21:41 look at the school catchment areas if you have children. You need to aim to get them into Bradfield at that side of the City. I think at Grenoside your options would be Chaucer or Yewlands.

Don't knock the geeks - their licence means the council can't build wind turbines up there :hihi:

I'd second that, my little boy's only just starting at Oughtibridge Primary (which has just had a very positive OFSTED inspection so congrats to them!) and even now I wouldn't risk moving locally to come out of Bradfield's catchment. The new-ish build houses up on the hill towards Grenoside are the very limit of the catchment area, when you get to Skew Hill it's Grenoside, where the primary school is apparently very good, but the secondary options not as good.
sheff_minx 17-10-2007, 09:50 As a young professional I love living in Oughtibridge. I've lived there for about eighteen months now and love it more and more! It's got everything for a day-to-day basis, and then Hillsborough just down the way for everything else! Admittedly the Middlewood Road scenario is slightly inconvenient () but it's not permenant *fingers crossed*
Can't comment on any of the other areas as I've never lived there.
Sheilabowing 17-10-2007, 11:06 I don't get all this about the Bradfield catchment. Is Wharncliffe Side no longer in it? Surely that would be the nearest high school? Is there another nearby?
Greybeard 17-10-2007, 11:21 I don't get all this about the Bradfield catchment. Is Wharncliffe Side no longer in it? Surely that would be the nearest high school? Is there another nearby?
Isn't there a secondary school at Stocksbridge ?

I have lived in Highgreen nearly all of my life and I like it. Woodland is only a short walk away from my house and it is priceless. The guys who fly the planes over Westwood are a nice set of people who respect the country park and I dont find the engine noise at all bad. Live and let live.

I agree 100%

If its not i want a refund on my council tax bill :hihi:
Sheilabowing 17-10-2007, 13:37 Isn't there a secondary school at Stocksbridge ?
I don't think that's as near as Bradfield. And Wharncliffe Side is in Sheffield.
I like the look of Wharncliffe Side. It's beautiful.
And Wharncliffe Side is in Sheffield.
So is Stocksbridge!
Sheilabowing 17-10-2007, 19:03 Is it?! I didn't know I don't hail from these parts:D
pippadoll 17-10-2007, 19:18 Stocksbridge isn't such a bad school, or is Ecclesfield, but I believe Bradfield is far superior.
