View Full Version : Marks And Spencers Sheffield Markets
Hi All
Does any know/remember if there ever was a Marks & Spencers down near the Sheffield Markets ( haymarket )
just one of those pub conversations that has people arguing for hours
Isn't that a bit too close to Fargate? There was one on the moor before Meadowhall sucked all the worthwhile business out of the town centre.
There was a large British Home Stores - it shut down a few years ago.
Nomme
Actually, now you say that, if you go and look at the entrance to the BHS (if that's where you think it was) M&S usually have some give-away structural details. The terrazzo (?) entrance would be a specific colour, and they may even have had a brass name plate on the threshhold.
Yes
I thought that that BHS was once where a marks was years ago before they moved up town, that one near pond st you mean ? woolworths was a bit further down.
dollypeg 14-01-2005, 16:34 Marks and Spencers never had a store near the market. When the old market hall was pulled down, Woolworths moved into a brand new building where Wilkinsons is now. The old Woolworths store was pulled down and a new building erected, this was occupied by British Home Stores but now stands empty.
In my teens I actually worked at Woolworths and moved with them from the old building into the new one.
Marks and Spencers had stores on Fargate and the Moor.
There was m&s in fargate and also 76 the moor next to atkinsons,as I have ask in a previouse thread did anyone work in the moor branch in the late 60s to mid 70s,as i used to work there then ,left to start a family, but know some still work at m&s meadowhall, even now!Thats a long time to work for the same company. It used to be a good company to work for,and they use to look after their staff, back then.
marycrookes 14-01-2005, 16:53 I can't remember a M&S down near the market, but can anyone remember a M&S where the Locarno was, I'm sure that M&S opened a store in that same building, and previous to M&S opening the shop, it had been a cinema, and the floor sloped down to the front?

Mary, - are you perhaps thinking of Atkinsons ? Their shop was in an old cinema towards the bottom of The Moor [about opposite where they are now] in th 1940s. I remember the sloping floor and the entrance was up steps similar to the Locarno.
marycrookes 14-01-2005, 19:37 Thanks Greybeard, you may be right things changed a lot down there, so could I ask if anyone also remembers a very big church that stood back from the pavement, and I think there were steps going up? Also there was some single storey buildings also near the Locarno and I think one was Fretwell Downings caterers?
Yes I remember M&S being where the Locano was. As Marycrookes says the floor sloped. It must have been just after the war and before the buiding wa a dance hall. I remember shopping there with my mom and my aunt. probably about 1948, I was about 12. In my early 20's I was dancing there and as far as I remember it was newly opened.
It had an upstairs part were you could look over the balcony and watch the dancers.

there was an M&S on The Moor (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/hpac.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=6802)
The one I remember was more modern though.
