View Full Version : New students - a breath of fresh air

I had reason today to walk round the city centre and a few suburbs. Everywhere there were bright young things, obviously new to the city, radiating excitement and enthusiam as they went about their fresher business. I know that happens every year, but today what hit me was just how much it invigorated the atmosphere in town. I've had my fill recently of the background noise of that Sheffield soup of inverted snobbery and snide luddite doormatting. It was fantastic to watch all these optimistic, talented young people starting out in their new life. I felt so happy for them. I remember well the buzz myself of too many years ago, when it was me. I think too many people choose to ignore just what a contribution the Universities make to the city. Their input into what makes the city shine seems to be resented rather than celebrated far too often.

So I'd like to welcome all new students who might happen upon SF. You're a breath of fresh air and it's about time the place was buzzing again. Have a brilliant time and make the most of all of it. :)

Yes, I'd agree with that. I was on a No.10 bus last week and has always, there were problems going down Crookesmoor Road from top to bottom, with cars parked on either side. One passenger hollowed: "You can tell t' students are back!"
I've been one, my daughter is one, elsewhere, and I'd like to think people could be more welcoming - though I am aware a few let the side down.

Wonderful to have the students back, what with the wrong turns, u turns, wrong way down a one way street, bright red faces with the "im really sorry" to be shouted out the drivers window. I really do feel for them, Sheffield must be a nightmare to drive in if you dont know the roads.

Perhaps they should have special plates on their cars - like the green L ones for new drivers.

Possibly  would be the most appropriate!

I'm glad they're back. For a start I'm busier at work. And they bring life to the place.

There seems more around this time round. I wonder how many there are?

Tis true. Working at Leadmill so far this week has been rather a breath of fresh air indeed. Monday night had a really good atmosphere, even though it was busy as hell!
It seems busier this time because both the uni's have their freshers week at the same week this year, so its uber busy everywhere!

I had to smile on Monday at what was obviously a dad and daughter (student) transporting 2 pieces of furniture, probably from one of the charity shops near the market, on the tram! Its such an exciting time especially for the first years. I hope they enjoy the experience!

will you think like this when you can't get to the bar on thursday??

It'll be nice for the drivers of buses whose destination boards read "CITY CENTRE" in massive letters to see young people boarding the bus and asking "Do you go to the city centre?" again......

As much as I like them being back, they're clearly off their t*ts.
I dropped some off there on Monday, and the queue went to the corner of the censored bar. I thought that was bad, but when I finally managed to get past the entrance, and continue down the road, there was another queue of equal length at the other side :loopy:

I'm going to take a little stick with me, and prod them out of the way:);)

Agreed, I've been a student on and off most of my adult life since leaving School, and it's been mostly good.

And my Brother, if he hadn't gone to Sunderland Uni he wouldn't have met his missus, they've been married just over a year now but have been together since they lived in the same Student house in Sunderland way back in the early 90s.

People who tar all students with the C word brush and slag them all off based on the actions of a few, need to shut up in my opinion.

You can guarantee anyone with red/green/blue/yellow hair is a first year student, it's like they think "I'm free from mum and dad, what shall I do first ? I know I'll dye my hair".

I do like the students though, they add life to the city.

My favourite student encounter :

Student - "Do you know where the city hall is ?"
Me (pointing) - "Yeah, it's there, behind you"
Student (turning round) - "Where ?"
Me - "There, that bloody great big building in front of you"
Student - "Oh yeah"

Last week:

Me gets off bus. Walking away from bus station feels tap on shoulder. Turns round.

Student - "Can you tell me where the Transport Interchange is?"
Me - "Yes, it's behind you."
Student examines map - "Can you show me on the map?"
Me points to it on map- "Yes, it's there"
Student - "So how do I get there from here"
Me - "Turn round - it's behind you"
Student looks over shoulder in surprise - "Is that it?"
Me - "Yep"

I was on my way back from work on Monday, sat at the bustop in my usuall thank god it's all over mood. Two obvious freshers came and stood beside me at the stop.
It made me chuckle a bit because you could tell it was the first time they had ever been away from home and they were putting on a blatent display of 'gayness' I think they were trying to shock me if I did not know better :hihi: I felt a bit bad for the disapointment they showed when I did not bat an eyelid :) Prehaps I could have been a bit shocked just to keep them happy. Sheffield is now as seasonal as Blackpool or Benidorm, its just our 'low' season is july-sept. Welcome back students, its been dull without you.

I also feel a bit sorry for them as well, sheffield is superb in the summer and they miss it.

I always like this time of year when new students arrive. Was quite amused listening to two SHU students discussing which would be the best weekly bus or tram pass to buy to get from their accomodation on division street to SHU on arundel gate. Surely it would be quicker and cheaper to walk?

Indeed, it only takes 10 or 15 minutes to get from side of the city centre to the other if you where your going.

Less than 10 mins walk from division street to arundel gate, surely! And it would work off all the drink and takeways we (i mean them!) consume!

Unless they have had so much that they have to crawl into uni every day. That would be worrying.

As I was walking past the top of the Moor, I heard one (definite!) Fresher remark to his cohort,

"This place is just like Leeds".

Lesson #1 of not getting beaten up in Sheffield.....

And they all look about 12!!

Ahem! I have pink/purple/blue hair and I graduated in 1994!! (it was pretty normal all the time I was student....)
When I was a first year I was amused to see all the lads growing their hair - by Xmas it was longer than collar length but when they came back in january it seemed to have shrunk back again....

Yes, back to queing in the Co-op, waiting for a student to pay for his can of Coke and a packet of crisps - grand total 95p - with his debit card.

Actually, I agree: they bring a lot of life back to the city just when the nights are drawing in. They also bring me extra pennies with their rent cheques.....yippee!!!

It's just a shame they all need their own cars (ie, they don't).

A lot of life indeed: I was heading towards Nether Green on Fulwood Road last night at 8.30 and passed several thousand jolly students pub-crawling into Broomhill and then presumably on to the city centre. Just like the good old days of the pyjama jump.

I am glad that I was heading the other way to find a pub!

Would you all think it's great to have them back if your house was joined on to students? I was kept awake all Friday night, fortunately it did not wake my little boy up. It's nerve-racking each year wondering what type of students will be living next door.

Opposite there's a group of students all about 6 footish, all wearing identical clothes and with identical Ford Fiestas who spend many a hour gazing longingly (in a Homer Simpson looking at a doughnut kind of a way) at their cars and setting the hideously loud car alarms off at every opportunity. Come on lads - you're not clones. Are you?:loopy:

If you are a student and reading this thread, please remember to be considerate to your neighbours. Also check out what day is bin day in your area and put your bin out the night before and then retrieve it when emptied.

Would like to add my annoyance towards the students who insist on paying for anything under £5 with a credit card.

STUDENTS !! -- --- A little word of advise.

If the pub/bar is crowded, its probably best to pay for your pint with money, rather than with a credit card.

Gets very annoying, for others at the bar waiting to get served ;)

Students ... when you are out shopping please don't congregate immediately in front of the entrance of the shop.

Last week I had trouble entering/exiting to/from shops on several occasions because students were blocking the way. What was worse? They were totally unthinking/unaware of the people trying to get in and out of the shops and just stood there while people pushed their way past. I heard one shopper shout "move out the way!" at one group who did not respond to "excuse me".

Haha!! I tried paying cash for an item in the apple shop today and was told I would have to wait. I asked why and was told that only one till could take cash so I ended up paying by card. It was quicker!

I have that weird feeling of being both a new student, and 26, so whilst I ask for weird things when I get on a bus ("Can I have a super saver, big saver? I don't know! I just want to pay £3 for this return journey!!!") I also get to secretly laugh at the little tykes talking rubbish.

Best one so far, off the top of my head was: "You see that girl in our flat? Don't she have right small teeth! Do you think it's small teeth, or big gums?"

and also, trying to explain to one girl what the Peaks were.
