View Full Version : Reyson Gracie Seminar @ Gracie Barra Sheffield
Hi,
I have the honour and pleasure of holding a seminar with one of only a handful of professors in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The seminar will take place on the 3rd Oct @ Gracie Barra Sheffield at 6.30 and there are limited places. The cost is £35.
Reyson has fit this seminar into his busy European tour and is an opportunity not to be missed!!!
This is taken from the promotional site:
Reyson Gracie is the 3rd son (7th child) of Prof. Carlos Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Like his father, he has structured his life around 3 pillars: Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracie Diet and Spiritualism.
In the beginning of the 60's Reyson trained many athletes to fight in the famous Brazilian TV programme "Heróis do Ringue" ("The Heroes of the Ring"). With a unique pedagogy for both children and adults, his classes have always been known for exploiting not only the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu but also the philosophy behind the ancient martial art.
One of Prof. Reyson's most important achievements was the introduction of Jiu-Jitsu into the Brazilian state of Amazonas in 1977 where he created the Amazonas Federation of Jiu-Jitsu. The state is nowadays the second biggest in this sport worldwide, only behind Rio de Janeiro. From 1997 to 2002, he headed the Bahia Federation of Jiu-Jitsu. Since then he has been travelling and giving seminars in and outside Brazil to students and teachers of all levels.
Professor Reyson Gracie currently writes for two outstanding BJJ magazines in Brazil.
If you would like to book a place or want more info give me a ring on 07738588925.
Thanks
John

dunk
I can understand that this is a training night for the guys at Royce Network and other clubs but this guy is top class. There are only 5 people alive or deceasedthat are a higher grade than Reyson Gracie.
He's the son of the founder of the sport!!
I don't want to judge anyone but to not be on the mat with this guy when he's in your town is nuts. 9th dans dont pop over that often.

That's the 3rd seminar that i know of in approx. 7 days - and unfortunately i have to miss them all! good luck with it though and well done for getting him to Sheffield
iamthemoon 29-09-2007, 14:38 sorry maye would love to come along to train with a great but unfortunatly there seems to be a load of seminalrs in one weeks.
would love to go to them all. mind says go but the money says NO
richardquinn 29-09-2007, 18:28 i would love to go but my collar bone wont be healed in time.. why does everyone apear when im injured???
BarraGergus 30-09-2007, 19:20 not to sound like a git, but f##k this GUY IS A RED BELT........... now that may not mean anything to people who dont know BJJ, and i can see why that is, but for F#@ks sake.
Anyone who has even read anything about BJJ knows that it all starts with the Gracie Brothers, Carlos Snr, Osvaldo, Gastao Jr, Jeorge and Helio, this guy is the 3rd son of Carlos Snr, you cant get any closer to pure BJJ than that,.
again sorry to rant but these guys dont travel that often. even the BJJ black belts are wetting them selfs because hes coming.
I would definately be at this seminar, unfortunately WED is my busiest night teaching, anyway have a great seminar and I'm certain it will be a great success.
Craig,
I'm sure the guy's great and I love the write up on him (anyone who states an interest in spirituality as well as martial arts gets my attention), but unfortunately i'm travelling to Leicester for work on Wednesday afternoon and won't be back till late Thursday, so it's just not feasible.
I'm not sure if 'call in sick' was in reference to my post, but if it was, a quick answer - no - it's not worth it
BarraGergus 01-10-2007, 17:03 tell them your leg fell off and this guy is going to fix it ;-]

:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:
Its not worth it?? That's like the craziest thing i think i've ever heard! We must have extremely different priorities but this is HUGE!!!! This is learning from the son of the PIONEERS of BJJ. I don't train Judo but if Jigoro Kano's son was here doing a seminar for £35 i'd be there in a shot.
This isn't just another BJJ class!! This is learning from the source. There aren't more than 6 people who have EVER lived that know more about BJJ than this guy! I know that i'd regret not going to this soooo much. Every black belt that is in this country will be wanting to spend some time with Reyson to further THEIR game!!
And if it's good enough for them its good enough for anyone and everyone on this forum!

'Worth' is a relative term - it's also very personal, and for me, it's not worth calling in sick when i'm not (effectively lying to my employer). you also don't know what the implications of that would be, either for me or the people i work with, but i would hope that anyone on this forum, given my employer and the nature of my employment, would say exactly the same.
I'd also draw your attention that i was interested by the 'spiritual' - i'm not sure how you define spirituality, but lying to my employer (a charity), effectively stealing money (from the general public who have donated in good faith), and depriving children and young people (many of whom are neglected/abused) of a service, is not exactly congruent with my spiritual outlook, in fact, i can't imagine anything much more crazy than lying and stealing in order to go and to see someone whom you're interested in on the basis of their spirituality as much as their BJJ (or other) abilities.
if you think prioritising BJJ or anything else over ones personal integrity and the health and well being of others, then yes, you're quite right - we have very different priorities.
P.S. it's not about whether or not it's good enough and i never implied it was - i said it wasn't worth calling in sick for, and like i said, that's both personal and relative. It wouldn't matter to me if was a Judoka and Kano himself had been brought back from the dead for a one night only seminar in sheffield - i still wouldn't lie and steal in order to go and see him. Some things we just have to accept, and I have to accept that I can't always do what i'd like to because I have responsibilities to my self and others. End of.
P.P.S. i have nothing more to say on the subject!
I have to agree with Anvil on this guys, let’s face it the only reason he's coming is because I can’t go to London for that seminar as its my daughters birthday.
But I made an effort to get him here as I couldn’t miss out.
I am very sorry to see that there isn’t a representative from any other local bjj/grappling school, I've heard some reasons but to be fair they aren't as concrete as Anvil's.
I was hoping for someone to come out with the classic line about his belt not making him a good teacher but I've been let down:hihi:
John
I hope the seminar goes well for you, I would have loved to have been there but I’m teaching, if there had been more notice that the seminar was on I could have changed what I was doing.
Your right it’s a training night for a lot of people it’s hard for people to change what’s already set for them with only 2 weeks notice, that’s also the risk of hosting seminars, some people don’t have the same commitment as others think they should,
I admire people with ethics, if Anvils got people that are depending on him to turn up at work, and that means missing out on training with a living legend in the martial arts world, then good on him.
Not everyone’s priorities are the same, some have to WORK to pay for training, FAMILY, rent/mortgage, food etc, some don’t work but still have money to train.
For some people training is a way of life for others it’s some thing they do to get out of the house, we all have different reasons for training and for not training, I think I have heard them all over the past 25 years.
I hosted Rick Young recently, a few off the forum said they were up for it, it’s a good job I don’t save places for people, I think anyone that misses training with Rick is nuts.
John good luck with the seminar have a good time on the mat
Mark
BarraGergus 03-10-2007, 14:56 is it just me or did it just get deep in here,
:-)
Thanks to all who came along, was a great evening.
themadrev 04-10-2007, 09:01 Thanks to John G (Truebjj) for organising a fantastic seminar. What a lovely, gracious, humble man Reyson Gracie is. I think he was supposed to teach for two hours and he had to be stopped after three! For me, the self defence stuff was excellent and not something we often do. I thought it was great to see BJJ as a complete martial art and not just the ground fighting part of MMA. I especially enjoyed watching guys who are fantastic on the ground perform some very dodgy hip throws!! It was lovely to see the guys an girls from Gracie Barra Derby and Tim with his students from Matlock. All the best for the Rodrigo seminar on Sunday. Sadly I have another engagement!! but hope to be there at the end to get my book signed. I'm sure Rodrigo Gracie will show another facet of this great art. It was a privilege to be there last night even though my dinner was in the dog when I got home!!
It was great last night. Thanks a lot John for asking him to come up and i hope you managed to feed everyone last night.
I really think people need to stop taking things so personally on here. Thats the problem with writing things and not saying it face-to-face. A statement can be taken in a way it wasn't intended. I wasn't trying to upset anyone.
There's a few things been said on here that i could have been offended by (and maybe that is how it was meant) instead i'll take them in a good way. Like i hope they were intended. I was joking when i said for you to call in sick Anvil. The statement about priorities was intended universally not solely for you. I was stating that we obviously had different priorities as a fact not trying to offend you.
Mark if i'd have known Rick was in Sheffield i'd have been there. The guy is another living legend and i'm gutted i missed it. I do know what its like to work to live tho. I just choose not to live to work.
