View Full Version : Does anyone like breakbeat?
Dan_Random 25-09-2007, 13:10 Does anyone know what breakbeat is ????
I've been DJing this sort of music for the past 4 or 5 years and always find that people like it, they just don't know what it's called.
The top guys in breakbeat or breaks are the likes of The Plump DJ's, Adam Freeland and Stanton Warriors. The best description I've heard of it is...
"Well, house music goes Boom Boom Boom Boom, whereas breaks goes Boom tish Boom Boom tish."
It'd be good to find some other breaks fans in Sheff :D
pinnacle 25-09-2007, 13:36 I used to be until very recently a huge breaks fan but i found a lot of the tracks being produced were *****. I suppose its like any genre, you'll always get the dross, you just have to dig deep.
discodown 25-09-2007, 13:43 i like it loads but rarely listen to it
pinnacle 25-09-2007, 13:45 Im the same, ive got loads of Evil Nine, Tayo, Freeland, Stantons etc.....(even my dogs called Stanton!!) but i kinda got bored of the sound. Its happened before, no doubt i'll go back to it.
Dan_Random 25-09-2007, 13:56 Breaks does seem to have it's up and downs, but I reckon it's definately on one of the ups at the minute... Local guys like M.I.Loki and Kickflip are putting out some amazing tunes. It's one of those sounds that's never really hit the big time and tbh I kinda like it that way. Seems quite a lot of people moved over to the electro-house and tech stuff recently, which I also like but tend not to play out so much.
neeeeeeeeeek 25-09-2007, 14:07 I thought this said does anyone like breastmilk :|
Getting back to the subject in hand, Yep, Freelands stuff is great but was not so impressed with his last release (the mexico one) post some more names of stuff I can keep an eye out for..
pinnacle 25-09-2007, 14:12 Try Meat Katie, Elite Force, Plump Dj's, Tayo, Dopamine
JFKvsNixon 25-09-2007, 14:26 Was Urban Gorilla mostly breaks? When headcharge finished I went there a few times but couldn't really get into it.
pinnacle 25-09-2007, 14:28 Urban Gorilla used to be breaks but seems to be supporting many genres of house music now. Mainly tech house and minimal as well as breaks.
JFKvsNixon 25-09-2007, 14:31 We're talking around 3 years ago when I last went.
pinnacle 25-09-2007, 14:34 Yeah if i remember correctly it will have probably been breaks back then. Was it at .Zero?
JFKvsNixon 25-09-2007, 14:39 Yeah if i remember correctly it will have probably been breaks back then. Was it at .Zero?
It was, I remember i couldn't really get into the music after going to headcharge for years.

no doubt you've visited breakbeat dot co dot uk? for nights in Sheffield
discodown 25-09-2007, 19:35 i think vandal is a much underrated DJ. Thats about as breaks as i get!
RichSmol 25-09-2007, 21:06 I had the pleasure of DJing with Kickflip on sunday night at the Runaway Girl for Respite, the guy knows his breakbeat thats for sure and his latest releases seem to have a certain funky flavour combined with old school rave that makes it so damn pleasing on the ear!! Found this snippet on juno (http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF263063-01-01-01.mp3)...
I definately think its on the up, it doesnt take much hunting around to find small bedroom breaks producers who are pumping out some class tunes that still radiate technical ability. Came across 'Beta' and 'C83' the other day and found a lot of really bass heavy breaks which made me so so happy when i listened to it. As a breaks DJ i dont think theres been a better time since adam freelands pioneering moments of the 90's and Meat Katies drive for dominance a couple of years back (dont think the guy has every relinquished this push to the top actually). Im also liking where its goin as it starts to clash with the nu rave scene (although i hate the branding of it). DJs like Kissy Sell Out and Erol Alkan (to an extent) have adopted the snap of the breakbeat without actually labelling it breakbeat - kinda cross between breaks/tech-house/nu rave (god knows what you call that but it usually involves lots of guitar riffs). Anyway thats my penniths worth, its been a while since ive posted but if theres more posts like this i'll post more! :-)
RichSmol 25-09-2007, 21:08 oh, discodown, Vandal is underrated. Hes always performed when ive seen him, i get the impression that he doesnt want full on stardom though considering he doesnt seem to produce/DJ that much...maybe its Lot49 holding him back?
Urban Gorilla used to be breaks but seems to be supporting many genres of house music now. Mainly tech house and minimal as well as breaks.
Hi guys, Urban Gorilla's sister night BUG at DQ is now where breaks is getting played regularly, we have Tayo's Tracksuit Party next friday, Plump DJs in November and Kickflip is our resident DJ..
RichSmol 25-09-2007, 21:32 right on...unfortunately i will be going to sankeys instead. Tayo was suppose to be on at the MTV stage at the Exit festival this summer but they had technical difficulties, instead put him on the main stage which must of had a capacity of 20,000. The bloke was amazing, obvisously he didnt fill it but he definately put smiles on peoples faces! Great touch at the end of his set to mix his last track in then get in the crowd and start dancing with the crowd for the last 5 mins!
If you come wearing a tracksuit it's only £3! Have a good one at sankeys though
RichSmol 25-09-2007, 21:36 absolute bargain for Tayo & Kickflip.
Smithster 25-09-2007, 21:56 Proper looking forward to seeing the Plumps there in November. What a booking that is!

The only problem with this music is it is completely lost in its own arse, because it is refered differently by different cats in the industry.
I have heard UK Garage, drum n bass, disco loops, drum breaks, techno, big beat all using this same title breaks and it is very frustrating. I suppose this is what makes it unique, however it is far from being an original formula, but still at least innovative at the same time.
Real Break beat to me will always be foundations of hip hop, Apache, funky drummer etc. This new thang breaks is just 2007 flava.
Probably the best flava that sounds remotely a hybrid between hip hop, techno has to be bashment reggae. I am referring to underground Bashment like what the soundsystems play, Winston Hazel, myself tend to always play it in a set (Lenky style productions). However there is not many places to play this sound. I class bashment reggae as breaks because of its mixes of influences and also in the begining reggae music helped forge the development of hip hop, (kool dj herc / jamaican dj)

Perhaps confusingly (and I guess as suggested in 4321's post) breakbeat dot co dot uk is a drum and bass forum.
supermar 26-09-2007, 13:14 Breakbeats are nice, but I still prefer the good old four/four dance music! Speaking of which, is Gatecrasher still good these days?
Ops...sorry, a little offtopic hehe

I have to say I like some of it, although I think I prefer breaks....have been told it's different but maybe it's not, who knows. Anyone???
Anyway, It's dead easy to mix but I have to say I prefer dnb to breaks but some of the tunes are great! I like Freak Nasty - think he is breakbeat - he;s fab!!!

oooh my favourite place!! :hihi:
Agent Gypo 26-09-2007, 16:19 I like a few breaks tracks, but an hour of it is a great way of inducing sleep.
jamesogt 26-09-2007, 16:32 I like breakfast is that similar?
Dan_Random 26-09-2007, 16:45 Some interesting viewpoints here :D good to see this sort of discussion...
For me breakbeat has always been an open and inclusive genre with the ability to both influence and absorb other styles and flavas. It can be a very slippery thing to define, with a range from the laid back funk type grooves of people like Plaza da Funk and Grand Def Audio through to the full out assualt of the tearout boys like the Breakfastaz and CTRL-Z.
Personally I prefer the midle ground of bass heavy but still musical artists such as the local boys M.I.Loki, the great Bob Kickflip, and record labels such as Ape, Sinister and Streetwise.
little bit of a plug here (sorry) I'm resident at Future Funk where we've decided to go headlong into the breaks route and will be booking a lot of up and coming talent over the next year and we've got an proper blinder of a breaks line up with Baobinga & I.D. and Ben & Lex who have been churning out proper monsters of breaks tune for the last 6 or 7 years.
If you've got time, have a listen to a recent mix me and my brother did for one of the breakbeat radio stations here...
The Randoms 45 min Breakbeat mix. (http://www.divshare.com/download/1576537-61c)
would love to know what people think of it :D (I can't imagine it'll send you to sleep though ;) )
Agent Gypo 26-09-2007, 17:14 Listened to about 25 minutes but it's just not my sort of thing really.
Dan_Random 26-09-2007, 17:20 Fair enough, thanks for giving it a go though :D
discodown 26-09-2007, 17:42 I love the mix! Its the sort of breaks i love but rarely hear

I don't know how you can classify a genre of music as 'breakbeat'. Breakbeat for me is electro (proper elctro, not this bastardised version pushed out by the Ministry of Sound and the like), drum and bass, early rave stuff (lenny dee ice, sons of a loop da loop era, prodigy), the big beat phenomenon of the mid 90's (wall of sound etc), hip hop, even some very old funk (the funky drummer by James Brown springs to mind). Now we have what's called Breaks, which seems to me to be a more electronic tinged version for the present day.
So, I do like breakbeats? Yes, always have always will, but the breaks thing just doesn't move me at all. For me it doesn't have any soul, it's too manufactured compared to the genres I've listed above.
P.S. Best breakbeat ever, on Hyperspeed by the Prodigy.
Is breakbeat like house, only it goes quiet after a big build up?
If thats it then I hate it :suspect: Its ruining clubbing! I hate milling around in a quiet bit after getting really into a tune that sounded like it was building into something really banging!
That may be the best definition of minimal I have ever heard:hihi:

Did I say something stupid? ;)
I know house, trance, techno, Drum&Bass, deep house and I think I know what progressive house sounds like.. but after that the genres are beyond me I'm afraid! I just go to house nights and hope for Remedy / Scuba kind of stuff.. but often get disappointed these days. Its most unfair!
discodown 27-09-2007, 19:28 far from it. you're absolutely right.

Then I hope you'll be popping down to Undone @ the Fez next week. Sounds like it'll be right up your street!
Highfielder 05-10-2007, 06:13 Breakbeat as in Hardcore from late 1990 to 93 and peaking in 1992 when it took over the pop charts and the recordindustry got so worried that they made it that you had to play live on Top of the Pops knowing that it impossible to reproduce a lot of hardcore/rave tracks live.
Loved it still play the classics now Acen, Sonz of a Loop de Loop Era, Run Tings, 2 Bad Mice, House Crew, Nebula II, EARLY Prodigy (Your Love etc), T99, Praga Khan, Hackney Hardcore, and a thousand more... lovely stuff...
Big Beat...couldn't stand it...horrible substandard stuff with rock influences that was only fit for drunk students....students?they should have just stuck with their indie rubbish and kept out of the clubs

I dont think it was called "Hardcore" until after 93, and the term was quickly hijacked by "Happy Hardcore" I was a big party goer in 92 (Castle Morton, Lechlade) onwards and would listen to "rave" "techno" and "jungle".

This is what i loved about UG when i first went. Haven't been for a couple of years now. Get the impression i would be disappointed due to changes over time with the music

Pedant Alert!
It was known as hardcore long before 1993. DJ Seduction's Hardcore Heaven was released in late 1991/early 1992 which is precisely about the time I got into the whole scene, and it was known as hardcore as far back as I can remember.
But if you want to look for the origins of breakbeat, although it certainly wasn't called that back then, look nor further than The Winstons' classic "Amen Brother" from the 1960s. The drum solo in the middle of that was sampled and used on probably about half of the hardcore rave tunes released in 1992 and is probably the most sampled drum loop in history. Ask any producer about "The Amen Break" and they will instantly know what you mean.

you what:roll:...hardcore was almost dead in 93 the split was occuring into jungle and happy hardcore.
i can't believe i'm actually having to tell anyone this but Hypnotist -Hardcore You Know The Score 1992, Hackney Hardcore tracks mostly 1992, House Crew We Are Hardcore 1992, DJ Seduction Hardcore Heaven, Q-Bass Hardcore Will Neve Die 1991, etc etc
or did I dream them all...I remember the term first being used around 1990 i think Hardcore Uproar (***** track and not really hardcore) came out that year
and you must have invented jungle if you were listening to it in 1992 as noone else was as it didnt exist. Johnny Jungle usually thought of as the first jungle track didnt come out until 1993 and even that could still be said to be semi- hardcore. ...

My thoughts/feelings exactly, it's not emotive.

funkymiss 27-08-2008, 09:55 Reviving! I'm off to a party on the weekend which is apparently gonna have a hefty supply of breaks. So to get me in the mood I'm listening to lots of it, haven't delved into my breaks/ breakbeat collection in quite a while.
Any recommendations or mixes, old or new? Especially old!
Looking through the past discussion, the genre talk confuses me. I guess I'm talking about the newer breaks type stuff.
geenius77 03-11-2008, 10:59 Breaks is still alive and well, I played an hour set at Headcharge on Sat night which went down well!
Here some Breaks mixes for ya....
