Anyone tried Skype yet ?
www.skype.com
If you've not heard about it, it's a freeware VOIP (voice over internet) service which allows you to "phone" people over the internet. I've just been trialling it with a work colleague and it works fine, the odd drop out here and there but it will save our company a fortune compared to mobile phone costs. If you use the phone a lot and the other person has internet access, give it a try. Note: I'm on broadband and would think that a dial up 56k connection would be too slow.
No connection with the company, just an impressed user :)

A friend recommended it to me a while back and I installed, haven't had cause to test it out yet though!

People seem to keep adding me to their list of buddies on it though....don't know if they think I'm someone else or are just being friendly!

We're using Skpye and getting telephone-quality over ADSL. It's quite impressive, seeing as Internet protocols are really not good for telephony.

You probably can use it over a dial-up connection because telephony usually uses 9,600bps and a dial-up connection willl give you c. 42,000bps. However
- it'll likely break up if you do much else with the connection
- since you're tying up the phone line to make the data call, you might as well have phoned them in the first place using a discount carrier like www.18866.co.uk

So, I don't pay for this?

Basically I'm paying by paying for the internet connection!

That's right. If you have friends/relatives oversees it won't cost you a penny (apart from your adsl/phone costs which you pay for already). The major telco companies must be quaking in their boots. We're trialing it for our company which has engineers scattered all over the country and we all have adsl anyway. It should cut the costs of mobile calls immensely.

I was just worried about having a massive bill for Tesco Home Phone / BT if I start using it.

Just to avoid confusion. If you have adsl it won't cost anything because you pay monthly for it and it's on all the time. If you use dial up then obviously it will cost you whatever your dial up costs are (usually about 1p per minute for 0845 numbers after 6pm). The person you call must have Skype running on their computer and you need a microphone and speakers for both ends. That's it.....
Simple to use and surprisingly good quality. You can even set up conference calls for a three (or more) way conversation.

OK, Thanks for that.

Above.

Skype (http://www.skype.com) is a free voice over IP app that's way better than MSN Messenger or Netmeeting for voice convos over the net.

I started using it last night after my Brother told me about it, and it's great! My Skype name is richallen if anyone is up for a voice chat on it some time

Recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone making regular overseas calls.

A bit belated, I know, but I've just downloaded this - I've not really called anyone yet, but it seems quite good!! Certainly better than MSN and it seems to even take messages for you if you're not logged onto your computer....!

So, since this was last posted - is anyone else using this? And Rich, are you still using it regularly or has the novelty worn off?

**EDIT** Rich I'm desperately trying to reach you but just getting an annoying buzzing sound...?

I am lovin Skype! The sound quality is really good considering the cruddy speakers I have on my laptop. Plus, the image of Shiesh hollering into her kids kareoke microphone is just too funny! :D

My kids faces were equally phased when they heard a phone ring (old fashioned Faulty Towers style) and a ' male voice' (the campest possible....LOL).... boom 'Are you there????'

It's not camp, it's just not from bloomin' geordie-land. At least folks can tell what I'm saying without an interpreter!

Blummin cheek!

No...I know it's not....Kristian but it was funnier to imagine that it were!! Very Funny!!

Hey, you could discipline my kids for me...it really freaked them this unexpected ring then a voice from the computer....!!

You could come in handy at Christmas I'll get you to change your name to Santa and you can call him and ask him if he's been a good boy etc .....ho ho ho!!

A voice coming from the computer is scary for kids....you really should've seen their little faces..lol!!

Far worse than the child catcher of my generation!!

29-05-2005, 08:06
I have had it a while now but don't use it that much. My brothers in Sweden and on the South Coast use it all the time and we had a 3 -way conversation when I first set it up.

I need to get the hang of it 'cos it is far much better than msn.

I too was startled by the old fashioned ringing telephone when I first used it too Shiesh. Kinda liked it after a while though.

Might get my 'techhie' friend to help me get my head round it. Then will be calling you all up for a cyber chat!! :hihi:

Yeah that's the one area in which Skype falls down, no video chat, only VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) chat.

Well ...... you would be forgiven for not knowing about this! (http://www.festooninc.com/) :)

I think there is other, similar stuff out there as well.

Go to the Skype Website and look at their forums.

Here is another one. (http://www.video4im.com/)

Got my webcam today.
Downloaded Festoon but after ages trying with a distant contact we gave up with it as it has some weird convoluted steps to actually make and accept contact.
This will have to wait until it is made a lot more user friendly.

Then downloaded 'Spontania' from www.video4im.com and found that as easy as pie. Video chat over Skype does work.

Have skype running and then start 'Spontania', start your call in the usual way with skype and connection buttons on the Spontania window should do things automatically.

Good luck!

Skype Me can be great fun but only if you fancy talking to a perve. If you can't have a laugh about some numpty ringing you, don't do it.
