Prudence was her surname, her first name was Rosie, she was the sister of a friend of mine, and as i am sure you realised at the time had serious mental health problems.
sharonxxxx 24-09-2007, 21:35 well now i do and bless her a lot of kids ( not me ) used to tease the poor woman i was only 7 maybee 8 and you know what kids are like at thet age  bless her i did used to fight her corner actually and stop them from doing it i am a lot older and wiser now but back then i was petrified of her . it must have been awful for the poor woman thanks i never knew she was called rosie x
Do you remember she had a little brown terrier dog ? She walked miles with him, as he became old he could hardly walk, but she wouldn,t let her sister in to take him to the vets. Many times the police were called out by her neighbours and they would fetch her sister to try and calm her down, problem was she wouldnt let anyone in the house, not even her family. She wouldn,t even let the doctor in it was a tragic situation really and went on for many years. Her sister is still alive.
sharonxxxx 24-09-2007, 21:54 god yea i do remember the dog bless brings back lots of memories actualy i cant believe her sisters still alive cus i remember her being oldish when i was about 7 and im nearly 40 now yes it must have been horrible for her when your kids though you dont think of the situation behind it awww poor woman she did get some stick from the kids i always just ran streight past her house because i was scared xxx
Her sister is 89 years old and lives at Hackenthorpe. Rosie used to walk the dog all around Frecheville and Normanton Springs, I lived on Wardlow Road and remember her from being around 8 years old. Cant remember when she died, do remember her taking an axe to her sister though. Her sister used to live on Wingfield Crescent.
Springslass 25-09-2007, 01:10 I lived in the Springs until January 1966 but can't remember this person. Did she live there at that time?
Do you remember what her house number was?

Hi When i was 13, 70yrs ago my uncle Fred[croft] lived in a row of cottages on the "springs" he kept chickens ,pidgeons, pigs, across from the cottage, it was a lovely spot in those days . Cheers Arthur.

I know where you mean.
The path led up to the old rail line when I was a child. I think they opened it further after I left so kids could get to the school quicker.
Still can't remember the poor lady...maybe she wasn't so bad during my time.
Sad to hear so much has changed in the springs...it was a wonderful place to grow up. We had green fields to play in as children and when we became teens we had the city which was only 20 minutes away on the bus.
Only family I recall from that row of houses was Evans as my sister and I went to school with 2 Evans girls. I still have Sheffield street directory and map from late 60s era which shows unfinished route for new road going thro Scowden's farm and on towards Tinsley (I think that's where it went?????)
Springslass 26-09-2007, 00:00 When I was really young my dad had an allotment where they built Normanton Grove. Across the road was Netherwheel Cottages and near them was vacant land called The Croft.....could that be the place you refer to????? It was part of the local Scowdens farm.
There were several rows of houses in the Springs but these were the only ones I recall ever being called cottages. There was also rhubarb fields (eaten many a green stick of it dipped in a bag of sugar) and 2 orchards. Old Man Clarke used to chase us kids away if he saw us trying to steal apples and pears. I took a trip recently via Google Earth and was pleased to see some of the green space is still there tho it looks different on Google Earth than when I was a child. But lots of houses are now replaced with new ones.

Rosie died in January 1998; she was 79.

Now I remember Pru very very well !! It is Ok for people to say that kids (of which I was one in the mid to late 1970's) used to torment her but that was not always the case. Pru used to lay in wait for us as we came down the path from City school and chase us, sometimes with carving knives and even an axe. Many times these were unprovoked events. Pru also used to watch us go to the little shop across the road (that was in the front room of one of the terraced houses) and lob empty milk bottles across the road at us and we were petrified of her. I am not saying kids didn't torment her because they did but not all those kids that happened to be chased by her had done so. The worst thing that Pru ever did was paint her little dog all over with blue emulsion :o

poshgirl 20-10-2007, 00:24 poor rosie i remember he well i was so scared of her she would wait and throw stuff at us her house is still there, springslass you talked about the grove (normanton) well that is a cul de sacif you stand on the end of it you look up there is four cottages on the right hand side looking upwards towards the springs, the cottages end at the begining of hessey street thats where i recently moved from. across the raod in the 70's there was mrs knights shop the houses are all still there although alot of new ones have been built behind them.
how long is it since you left if you dont mind me asking springslass how old are you?
Springslass 20-10-2007, 03:20 I left in 1966 to come to Canada at the tender age of 17 to join my sister and her family who had emigrated the summer of 65. At that time Canada was welcoming many from overseas to expand the population. I still have a brother living in Sheffield and he keeps me posted on what's happening back there......but this forum keeps me up to date on a lot of other stuff he doesn't report.
We used to live next door to the shop at 15. I was born in that house, went to Woodhouse West Primary then on to Brincliffe Grammar in 1959, left in 1964 to work at Firth Vickers in Cost Office on Shepcote Lane until I came to Canada in January 1966.
Never been back....so my memories of the old Sheffield haven't been usurped by the modern Sheffield.
