View Full Version : Council to spend more money on Potholes(not creating more!)
http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=918878
Just been reading this article from today's Star.
Lets nominate the Potholes with the least bit of tarmac around them,Sorry i mean lets nominate the worst roads for potholes and then i will send a link to Jan Wilson in a week or so. So she can have an idea where to spend the extra £4 million( include uneven roads)
My 1st nomination is Queens Road at Beighton as a 4x4 would struggle with that road.
My 2nd Nomination is Ecclesall Road South the stretch at Bents Green Road past the Prince of Wales.
I nominate..
Heeley Bank Road, all of it.
The road that runs behind Dancing Dollar in Attercliffe, that road looks like it has been bombed.
The motorway betwwen Morrisons at Catcliffe and ASDA at handsworth, so bumpy it makes you travel sick.

I presume you mean the A57 and I think most of that stretch comes under Rotherham not Sheffield.

The Sheffield Parkway is actually the A630 for this stretch (the A57 turns off and follows the Mosborough Parkway), but yeh, a good stretch is in Rotherham.

I'll second that nomination of Eccy Road south. It is ridiculous the amount of pot holes that have been badly covered over on that stretch. The whole road needs resurfacing.
cgksheff 13-01-2005, 10:47 A lot of the problem is compounded by the shoddy work done by the pot-hole fillers.
Holes are rarely chiselled clean/square before filling.
Bitumen/tarmac is often coated over leaves & dirt.
Joints are rarely sealed.
As a result filling just is holed again wthin a year or so.
Simply throwing money at the problem will not solve it.
Improvements in supervision and quality control is needed.

A good example of this is at Intake near the Embassy, the road was completly resurfaced a couple of years ago,not one pothole, now a few months ago a utility company has dug along the complete width of the road and refilled it so bad the the section has sunk and it has been like this for a few months.

The ones I've noticed were done OK, the ones on our road in particular are fine. New holes keep appearing all the time though (in different places before you ask). So I think we need a full new road surface, but hey, can't see that happening in a hurry.

What i can not understand is how a road like Birley Moor Road has just been resurfaced, and the one outside the fire station at Manor Top which is in the process of being done, which were not that bad to begin with are done before the likes of the one above.
cgksheff 13-01-2005, 10:59 I would really like to see a reliable report that compares the money spent/wasted on the pothole gangs coming back all the time versus the costs of complete resurfacing and only coming back every 10/15 years or so.
Yes, there will still be patching needed but not on the scale that it is currently.

How about the road that goes from the A57 to Crystal Peaks? The buses have made neat work of inserting 2 lumpy crumbling channels in both sides.
MuteWitness 13-01-2005, 12:05 i came off my bike when i tried to brake and fell into a pot hole, i took pictures of it but theyve just covered it up can i still claim?
Far as I can see most potholes tend to be caused by the bad resurfacing done by utility companies.
Cable seems to be the worst creating inch deep channels the width of a road every 15 metres.
Why can't the council regualte these people and make sure they resurface properly - or force them to do it again, if the road surface deteriorates after a year or so.
Why should it come out of the councils (our) pockets when the utility companies are responsible, and should do the job properly in the first place!
HarrietStar 14-01-2005, 12:04 the roads leading from hunters bar up to psalter lane
I nominate Carlisle St.!!! Surely the worst road to drive on this side of.. England!
GazB
MrJingles 14-01-2005, 12:19 The roundabout at the bottom of coisley hill (parkway) which is so corrugated it's a joke.
Too be honest they should just re-do the entire city and suburbs, surely some of the worst roads in england?
dishwasher 14-01-2005, 15:55 Woodseats Road and bottom end of Carter Knowle Road are dreadful.
In all honesty, it would be easier to list the roads that don't need potholes filled.
Is £4m enough to do this?
