Have just seen the new sculpture in Manchester on T.V.
It looks amazing, and was made in Sheffield. Well done to all concerned.
Some of the local people think it's an eyesore, though.
What does everyone else think of it?

Our soldiers getting killed abroad because they have to share bullet proof vests.
1.4 million pounds for this does seem to take the wee a little bit

:suspect:

It's spectacular. Wish there was something like it here.

I've seen it but i can't believe it cost that much. How on earth can anyone justify spending that amount when it could be so much better spent on other, more worthwhile things. Outrageous.

It's not there to be useful, it's there to be enjoyed. It's an incredible piece of engineering, and a credit to Sheffield.

I drove past it not long ago actually on way to a suppliers. I was more impressed with the rather large football stadium behind it and the very big Asda across the road.

Until I saw it on the news the other day, I didn't know what it was and I honestly thought it was something to mark the entrance to the COM stadium. And would never have guessed it cost £1.4m. I'll remember that when I put the lottery on on Saturday.

I noticed this huge sculpture? on the news and thought 'how on earth did it cost that much'
Did I understand correctly that it has been put up in Manchester? A sculpture made in Sheffield to promote interest or enthusiasm in sport and then it is erected in another city when Sheffield supposedly is a city of sport.
Sorry am I missing something?

It's great, and not a waste of money, public art makes a city more livable for everyone.

I wonder how long it will be before the scrap men start "borrowing" bits of it

The first thing I though of when I saw it was my nan saying something like "it'll have someones eye out that thing".

If you've seen the size of it and the angle at which it leans, the cost begins to make sense. It is an incredible piece of engineering, but more importantly, it's a spectacular piece of art IMO.

It's taller than the leaning tower of Pisa, just a metre short of Nelson's Column, and well over double the height of the Angel Of The North:

I think it's a typo on the BBC's part. Every other source says £1.4m. Which is a lot of money, granted.

But it's been made to last, and is the sort of thing that plays a part in attracting people into a city by providing a sense of visual identity. Do the people of Gateshead think the Angel of the North was a waste of cash? Nope - they love it.

i recall an april fool done a long while back where they were claiming that they were going to build a load of metal? daisies and stick them in the cooling towers at tinsley, sadly it was just an april fool but i think that they would have been fun :)

That would be fantastic! The sort of thing the National Lottery should be funding.

i watched a news night programme on it just before christmas, it said that the locals call it the G in the bang because of the length of time it took to erect (sorry if im repeating a previous post!) it had all the welders in the factory in sheffield saying it was nice but they would rather be constructing something more er... constructive
i think its posistion is a bit poor though, the angel of the north is on a lovely windy grass hill.

i love it up north.

That's what I said to Mr Strix when we saw the news last night!

And if it's to mark the 2002 games.... :suspect: :loopy: where was it then?

I would rather have that rather than some of the rather crappy public art things we have around sheffield. The thing at the bottom of the moor for instance. What the **** is that. Somebody once told ame it was a representaition of stags around a waterfall.
I would be happy to save council tax payers money and knock it down myself for free.

I don't think they make bullet proof vest out of steel.

You could argue that all art is a waste of money. How much money is "wasted" each year buying posters of boy bands? If the sculpture is enjoyed by 1.4 million people then it's as cheap as chips!

I think it's great, so only 1,399,999 to go!

I saw a clip on TV.
I will give you all my only free psychic predition this year.
More bits will fall off. After close expensive examination, by a team of experts from a local university, it will be discovered that it suffers from metal fatigue as a result of faulty workmanship, over-optimistic design and the wrong kind of wind. It will all end in spears.

Are you talking about that thing outside the Yorkshire bank? When it was first in place it was a water feature but I wasn't very impressed and plenty of other people thought it was naff as well. The local art students did some opinion polls and asked people what they thought it was.
1. Hands reaching to heaven
2. Broken crucibles
3. signifying the death of our steel industry
I'm sure there were others but it did make you look at it again with renewed interest Just a shame that it got full of rubbish and became a large litter bin.

I've seen a picture of it in the day light and it looks kind of ugly but apparently it looks dazzling all lit up in the night sky!

It is a ridiculous amount of money but the everyone can be criticised for spending money on things we don't need etc...
