A few people may be aware that the Women's world cup is being played in China. Tomorrow the US team is playing England for the semi final. My loyalties are therefore somewhat divided. I have followed the US team for many years and a great deal of success. It has won world cup and Olympic gold with the great Mia Hamm as a striker. She has more caps and goals than any player in the world, ,male or female. Unfortunately she has retired aalong with most of the players of the late nineties. Other teams, mainly China, Norway, and Brazil, are tough competitors, and the ladies aren't scared to mix it. I'm glad to see England in there for the first time, though my loyalties lie with the team I know and respect. If England wins tomorrow I wish them the very best in the final.
I'm surprised at so little interest in this event. You send a team of talented women all the way to China, who get to play the number one ranked team in the world for the quarter final. So they got beat, but survived till the second half scoreless by both teams.
When our government insisted back in 1990 that colleges and universaties had to provide as much finance to women's sport as to men's if they were to get government assistance there was a massive outcry form coaches in many sports. By trimming some of the lesser men's sports, colleges were able to improve progarms in which women could excell. So soccer, basketball, and field hockey were much improved. Softball, a variant of baseball had always had strong support and didn't need help. From this law known as title 19, women have won world and olympic titles in soccer, and basketball. When they won the olympic final against China, there was the largest crowd ever to watch a women's game 93000.
My friend is in China at the games Buck, she's related to Kristie Lilly, the Brits aren't interested in these games, not enought beer in China to go around .
USA beat England in the womens soccer match in China :o
Shouldn't this be in general sports ?
