well my son has finally got his wheelchair...and its horrid! Argh I know it will help him in the long run but its stressing me out already! I changed my car to enable it to fit in the boot - its so blooming heavy that I cant lift it in there! I still cant get out and about with him cos I need my partner to do the lifting! I was going to get some ramps for it but that isnt any good, my car is a renault scenic and they would have to be fairly long so the gradient of the slope isnt ridiculous, but need to fold up small as I have a pram in there as well! It also doesnt solve the problem of how to get it over the boot lip and onto the ramps in the first place!
On a better note I've already been stopped several times and asked where I got the personalised number plates and hood for it.... :hihi:

You can get boot hoists that lift the wheelchair in to the boot, don't know if that would be useful. New they're quite expensive, but you can sometimes pick up used ones on t'internet for a good price

The other solution is to get a trailer for the wheelchair. Presumably this is a NHS wheelchair which for some reason have to be twice as heavy as any others. I remember going on a coach trip with a group of others with disabilities and found not one person had a wheelchair suited to their needs. Try looking on Ebay and you might find a portable hoist that will help. Why can't we have wheelchairs like you see in Clarke and Partners windows, light and fun colours?

I KWYM, totally about "ministry" wheelchairs.

always completely too bulky/ heavy/ clumsy and available in such a scintillating variety of colours ( ! )

even with the quick-release wheels on my manual chair, taking off a couple of pounds in excess weight, mine is so clumsy, and awkward, I need someone to help push me, I can't easily self-propel.

My son has a Kato seat on a wheelchair, its huge with lateral, head and foot supports and weighs loads, dont know why i thought it would be lighter! we were assured as it was a childs one there was loads of different colours to choose from - there was about 4 and they were all pretty naff! Plus theres allsorts what could be done to it to make it better but they havent thought of it, like fixable front wheels, like you get on prams, or a sunhood type thing....
i think theres a pic of his wheelchair on his site, follow the link in my sig.
I'll have to have a look for those hoists, do they take up a lot of room?

no, the hoists can fold away into the boot of a car quite neatly.

My Bestie has CP (Cerebral Palsy), and has mobility difficulties she uses a wheelchair a lot of the time.

she can drive a car, and has a hoist in her boot which she uses to lift her wheelchair in and out, as she cannot do it herself.

You moan away, love, it's what this place is for! It must seem like 2 steps forward and 3 steps back for you at the moment.

PT's idea of a hoist sounds good - I hope you manage to find one to suit.

I've found one on ebay at the moment, quite worried about how big they look though, the wheelchair takes up most of my renault scenic boot, without the parcel shelf in, and I have to get my daughters pram in there too!
A trailer is no good though, I only passed my test last year and as far as I'm aware, my licence doesnt cover me to tow anything. Probably a good thing considering my reversing skills :hihi:

Most of manual wheelchairs fold up nice and neat but the lighter they are the more expensive they are but here is one ive found what may suit you and there are grants out there what might help you towards buying a really good one aswell but try this link anyway. http://www.mobilitymegastore.co.uk/item2335.htm

thanks for that but the wheelchair i have is for a child who needs full body support as he has no limb control whatsoever, including his head
