View Full Version : A plea to those in politics..
I’m making a personal stand!
Why are we bothering to try and teach children the benefits of positive communication etc. when all I see around me, from those who should know better and be setting an example, do not have enough integrity and discipline to be worthy role models?
If I get another political newsletter through my door from another party stating things such as “…the lib dems won’t do that for you” “the labour party has failed you, we are much better” etc. etc. then even if I was going to vote for them, I certainly won’t now. It’s just bad form and quite embarrassing. I for one will not subscribe so something so crass!
It's even happening in supermarkets.... if you have to put someone down to make you look good then............:shakes:
basshedz2 20-09-2007, 14:25 I totally agree - my mum always said "if you cant say something nice ..."
Denigrating the other parties isnt going to make me vote for someone - its just like saying "well we're ****, but everyone else is worse"!
BasilRathbon 20-09-2007, 14:28 This would have been a much better thread if I'd started it.
LordChaverly 20-09-2007, 14:31 This is known as 'negative campaigning' and is a standard feature of political life in the US. It is less common in the UK, but seems to be creeping in. Personally, it doesn't bother me, as I take almost everything said by the parties with a large pinch of salt. Negative campaigning can, however, be useful in that it may lead to the electorate having a clearer idea of the faults of the parties as well as their strengths. In any case, a slagging off, if done with style and wit, can be quite amusing.
The Manager 20-09-2007, 14:32 in my opinion labour are crap, i and many others are not happy with our FULL school that they are to close did they listen to its own VOTERS on this? no not at all hence Alf meade labour councillor lost his seat, now they are saying when they merg wisewood school they will sell it off to the highest bidder!!
well thanks labour !!:rant::rant:
AtticusFinch 20-09-2007, 14:42 I don't like negative politics either. I'm a natural Lib Dem voter but I've voted Green in the last two local elections, mainly because I didn't like the tone of the local Lib Dem election leaflets. Every one they sent had a message "It's a two-horse race in Sheffield. Only Lib Dems can beat Labour here!" which I found patronising and unnecessarily confrontational.
It's a shame because I like Ming Campbell. He comes across as a fair, polite, wise man with genuine gravitas, which doesn't seem to apply at all on a local level.
:(
muddycoffee 20-09-2007, 15:04 It is funny that I have never had a politician knock at my door, just a dustbin full of litter every few months. All of it goes into the dustbin.
If I had the room I would keep it all, and at last when I do meet one of them, I would get hold of them by the lapels stuff it all down their neck.

I read a blog entry about one guy who'd found a good use for election literature. He had a machine for compressing it all into a " paper brick", which he'd then use on an old-fashioned coal fire. He said that he managed to get one hour of burning from each brick.

CLEANER, GREENER, SAFER (http://www.evengreener.com/Shop/Home_Recycling/BRIQMAKR_Briquette_Maker_.html&gclid=CMDbmfz50o4CFQXnlAodSC2f7w) I'm sure our council would agree that this is the best use of political literature, for Sheffield.
