View Full Version : New broadband. can't send emails
I've just gone onto broadband with talk talk. Everything is working except I don't seem able to send emails. I'm still receiving them OK.
On dial up I sent them via Yahoo.co.uk.
When I changed to broadband nobody said anything about having to change email accounts.
I'd be most grateful for any help.
Thanks.
Azrael316 20-09-2007, 10:27 What are you using to send your emails? Outlook, Outlook Express, web interface?
alchresearch 20-09-2007, 10:40 It's called mail forwarding or relaying. Some service providers don't like doing it.
Imagine that there were two rival post services - Royal Mail and another company. Even though you stuck a royal mail stamp on a letter and stuck it in the other company's post box, they wouldn't process it for you.
You should still be able to use web mail though
If you were using some client software to sent the email - Outlook Express, Outlook etc then you may need to change your Outbound mail settings. It is likely that it was set-up before to use your old ISPs smtp server.
when you changed broadband ISP you effectively lost your old email address and were given a new one, you'll be able to receive email on the old address for a while until your old ISP gets round to wiping the account but as alchresearch says you won't be able to send using the old address as you aren't connected via their network, you might manage it using webmail but only until they get round to removing you
you need to switch to the email address your new ISP gave you and let those who need to know the address that it's changed
bit of a pain but on the plus side it should reduce the amount of spam you get, for a while at any rate
alchresearch 20-09-2007, 13:42 If you are in the habit of changing providers frequently, it could be worth buying a .co.uk domain name. You can redirect any mail to your current address then and the recipient is none the wiser who your service provider is.
The only problem is the build up of spam to an address in long time use.

Dick, I'm slightly confused. You say you sent e-mail when using dial up via Yahoo.co.uk.
It would be helpful to know how you are recieving your e-mails, are you loggin on to the Yahoomail website or do you use a program like Outlook Express?
If you can let us know exactly how you access your Yahoo mail then we would be in a better position to help as certainly I'm a little perplexed by your post.
Kingmaker2 20-09-2007, 16:43 when you changed broadband ISP you effectively lost your old email address
This is true esme, but I'm not totally sure that is Dick's problem as he says he sent them via Yahoo.co.uk before which is an webmail service and not an ISP mail service as far as I'm aware.
As I stated in my last post, Dick needs to give us a few more details before anyone can really help with his problem.
Sorry to be so thick about this.
Yes, I'm using Outlook Express
If I click on accounts, then on mail, then on servers, it says
server information
My incoming mail server is a POP3 server
incoming mail (POP3) pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
outgoing mail (SMTP) smtp.connectfree.co.uk
incoming mail server
account name
password
remember password (the box has a tick in it)
log on using secure password authentication (the box isn't ticked)
outgoing mail server
my server requires authentication ( the box has a tick in it)
then there's a box that says settings
If I click on that it says use same settings as my incoming mail server
That has a little circle with a green dot in it next to it.
I hope this means something to you guys.
Everything was fine until I changed to broadband 2 days ago.
Many thanks for your trouble.
I'm sorry i can't reply to your posts straight away but I do have to keep going out.

Yahoo! Mail Settings
Unlike Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail offers standard POP3 access for receiving emails incoming through your Yahoo mailbox, by using your favorite email client software. To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings:
Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)
Google GMail Settings
The Google GMail service offers email client access for retrieving and sending emails through your Gmail account. However, for security reasons, GMail uses POP3 over an SSL connection, so make sure your email client supports encrypted SSL connections.
Google Gmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP or smtp.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 465)
Lycos Mail Settings
The Lycos Mail Plus service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Lycos mailbox.
Lycos Mail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.lycos.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - smtp.mail.lycos.com or use your local ISP SMTP mail server
AOL Mail Settings
The AOL email service is a web based system, designed for managing your AOL mailbox via HTTP IMAP access. Unlike Hotmail, you can use any email client to access your AOL mailbox, as long as it supports the IMAP protocol.
AOL Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) - imap.aol.com (port 143)
AOL Outgoing Mail Server - smtp.aol.com or use your local ISP SMTP mail server
Mail.com Mail Settings
The Mail.com email service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Mail.com mailbox.
Mail.com Mail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop1.mail.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - use your local ISP SMTP mail server
Netscape Internet Service Mail Settings
The Netscape e-mail system is web-based, which means you can access their e-mail from any Internet connection. Netscape Internet Service also supports AOL® Communicator, Microsoft® Outlook, Microsoft® Outlook Express, and other POP3 e-mail software. The outgoing mail server needs SSL support, so make sure your email client software supports SSL connections over the SMTP protocol.
Netscape Internet Service Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.3.isp.netscape.com (port 110)
Netscape Internet Service Outgoing Mail Server - smtp.isp.netscape.com (port 25, using a secure SSL connection)
Tiscali Mail Settings
The Tiscali email service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Tiscali mailbox.
Tiscali Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.tiscali.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - use your local ISP SMTP mail server
Freeserve Mail Settings
The Freeserve email service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Freeserve mailbox.
Freeserve Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.freeserve.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - use your local ISP SMTP mail server
Supanet Mail Settings
The Supanet email service allows you to use POP3 and SMTP servers for accessing your Supanet mailbox.
Supanet Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.supanet.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - use your local ISP SMTP mail server
Kingmaker2 21-09-2007, 09:48 always had pop3 no worrys
Yahoo! Mail Settings:
Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)
Aren't these settings more applicable to Yahoo.com e-mail addresses rather than Yahoo.co.uk email addresses?
Dick:
Your settings should be :
Incoming: pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk (Port 995 If SSL is enabled)
Outgoing: smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk (Port 465 If SSL is enabled)
SSL is recommended as it ensures that your Yahoo! ID, password and email messages are transmitted securely between your mail client and the Yahoo! servers.
Thanks for all this.
When I try to send email a window opens that says an unknown error has occurred.
Account: "pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk", Server:"smtp.connectfree.co.uk", Protocol SMTP, Server Response: "554 smtp.business.co.uk", Port: 25, Secure[SSL]: No, Server Error: 554,
Error Number: 0x800CCC6F
To alter the settings
In the accounts box where it says Outgoing Mail[SMTP] smtp.connectfree.co.uk
do I simply delete "smtp.connectfree.co.uk" and type in "smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk" ?
After my last post last night I rang the Talk Talk help line and after a lot of messing about spoke to an Asian sounding woman whose English wasn't very good who said change the settings to "smtp.talktalk.net"
But she didn't say how to change them and I haven't done anything for fear of making things worse.
Also my email is not with talktalk unless it automatically changed when the broadband went live.

Dick your Yahoo email is seperate from any Talk Talk e-mail that they provide you with.
Your Talk Talk is your ISP, whereas Yahoo is a webmail service that is completely unconnected to your ISP.
In short to avoid confusion, just concentrate on using your Yahoo mail as you seem to be happy using that account.
Yes, Just replace the text, then click apply or okay.
This should work, but if it doesn't then let me know as it could be to do with with some security settings.
You can still go on receiving the email from yahoo without any changes, but as you're now connecting with talktalk you need to use their relay server to send all mail otherwise you'll get 'relay not permitted' errors. If you change the outgoing server in your mail account settings to smtp.talktalk.net but leave all other settings as they are you should find that your mails are sent fine and you should still receive your email as normal from yahoo.
Hope this helps,

Ahh you might be right orbrey, it seems that Talk Talk has a particular problem with Yahoo Mail!:suspect:
Dick, If you couldn't get your e-mail working even with the standard Yahoo setting then take Orbrey's advice.
Below is a step by step guide to how to change your settings.

Well folks.
many thanks for all that, I think you've solved the problem.
And that last link is beautifully clear for dummies like me.
I put in smtp.talktalk.net in the outgoing mail box and hey presto we're back in action.
I really appreciate the time and expertise from you all.
