I am moving to Sheffield and i would be grateful of peoples opinions about certain areas. We have viewed houses in the city and now have a viewing in Chapeltown. What is Chapeltown like?

there is good and bad in all areas of sheffield even chapletown the best thing is to avoid shopping areas or opposite pubs then just drive around the area at about 7.pm to 9.30 is and see some areas aquire roving gangs but other than that sheffield is a really nice place with some really friendly people

Thats a really good idea. I would not have thought to drive around in the evening. Although thinking about it, its just common sense. I'll have to mention that to my boyfriend. Thanks alot

Well if u ask me everypart of Sheffield is awful. I would strongly recommend that you don't move or ever go there as I made that awful mistake.
It's a dirty city full of dirty impolite, unfriendly, gormless people. It's full of racial tension, there is no decent shops in the city centre (Esp. for a city thats supposed to be the 4th biggest in Britain), then when you do go to the only place that has decent shops, meadowhall, your plagued by the smell of raw sewage as it is right next to a sewage plant...oh and a landfill site.
I can honestly say that the 8 months I spent in Sheffield were the most unhappiest 8 months of my life and I plan never to go back again and warn everyone I know not to go either.

So I guess the previous poster is having a really good day, then!

I bet he /she was sorely missed when they left Sheffield...

We have friends in Chapeltown and they love it there. Its very quiet where they live. There are loads of lovely areas in and around Sheffield. Good luck with your search, KickQueen!

Depends how much you want to buy a house for, if the house is cheap investigate the area!

Best to avoid the student areas - house prices around crookes and ecclesall road are through the roof as everyone buys to let.

Just out of interest... if you hate this city so much, why are you bothering to look at these forums?

Chapletown is good, there are some nice small house around the asda, the area has a very good shopping area and a very good rail link + only 5mins to the M1.

The bad points are: it is not advisable between 7pm-10pm as the gangs are out ( nr the spar ), there has also been sightings of Mr Bin Larden Person`s coming to the area, and as for the bus service it used to be excelent but First Mainline bosses put a end to that( see the site on the main page called Worse Bus Route ) depending what your budget is the marks out of 10 would be 7 there are more + point then -, if you have a budget of over £85000 then the West side of Sheffield is where you want to be.

Chapeltown is a really nice area, with a nice mix of people, and a variety of local amenities. I've lived there for most of my life, and enjoy the social side as well as the area itself. Houses are still relatively cheap for a place so close to sheffield/rotherham/barnsley centres, the M1 & Meadowhall.

Bear in mind that a bus into sheffield centre in rush hour will take just over an hour!!

Well I have to strongly disagree and am quite offended by some of this persons remarks. I am originally from Kent and came to Uni in Sheffield and was really gutted when I had to leave for Job reasons after having a really cool 4 years here. After 4 years away living in London (which is probably more like the above discription!), I couldn't wait to come back. So I did and have bought a house and it's sooooo good to be back. Sheffield has so much to offer. Like any city there are good parts and bad parts, of course there is, and I did my research before buying a place as I didn't want to buy in a student area which were the only areas I had known. I discovered loads of really nice residential areas not too far from the city centre. I'm in Norton Lees now.
The guest who posted that message must just have an attitude problem and obviously looks on the downside of everything and wouldn't surprise me if he/she had no friends here and we are better off without them!
I find sheffield to be a great place with lots of cultural things to do. It is apparently the greenist city in England and the parks are fantastic (Meersbrook park is fantastic for it's views and graves park is really beautiful). You have the peaks on your doorstep, and the city centre is really up and coming with all the improvements they are doing. The people are sooo friendly (maybe that guest should try living in London for a while and then think about Sheffield again!).
The bars in the centre offer something for everyone and the clubs are cool.

Sorry this is turning into an essay!

As for Chapeltown, I don't know it very well, but my friend bought a place there recently and she is really happy there.

Good Luck :D

Hate Sheffield? Try living in Manchester. That really is a scary place to live. Gun crime and muggings... common as buying a loaf of bread.

As someone already said, there's good parts and bad parts. I lived in Manchester for a couple of years and I never had any trouble, despite living within 30 yards of one nightclub and five pubs.

...It could be I was too drunk to remember having any trouble.

Students are not all that bad. Well, some of them...

So are places like Norton Lees good then?

I have been to Sheffield once or twice, to places like Dore and Totley, but I have to say I am not familiar with it.

Please!!! I have been trying to big up the city having moved here and year ago for good, and lived here back in 2000 for 9 months and felt pretty much the same. Surely is has some nice features I know it's a bit backward but the hills and views are great and people seem alright:huh:

Hi all,
I stumbled on this forum by accident, In fact I have only ever passed through Sheffield by its looks like a decent city. It seems from some of the responses, that life is what you make it in any place- also how well suited you are to that place.

Im a scouser, I know there is loads of bad press about Liverpool but it has good and bad areas, Ive worked in both types. I used to work in a school opposite a semi-derelict estate, the children who went there told me their entertainment was watching the houses burn down (they were 5 and the older chavs did it)the parents in the area had such a strong, friendly spirit to make the best of things and they did. I was scared stiff about going there at first but after a while i could see this point. I reckon that the guest who slagged off Sheffield blamed the city for their problems rather than take a look at themselves.

Im training to be a teacher at the mo, what is sheffield like for teaching jobs? :|

Not great for primary. I graduated last year and, considering the number of graduates there haven't been many jobs. Been doing supply and have a constant stream of that. Don't know about secondary, sorry.
