View Full Version : Safe in Greno Woods

Reading another thread on here just reminded me of something that has been intriguing me for a while.

Has anyone else seen what looks like an old safe in the woods at Grenoside?

It is without it's door and after many futile attempts to move it, it seems a bit heavy to have been carried out there. It is surrounded by trees so I cannot imagine a vehicle carrying it out there. It doesnt look to have moved in a very long time.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd love someone to shed some light on the subject.

Thanks.

Do the police know it's there? It sounds a bit fishy :suspect:

It looks like it could date as far back as the 1930s - or maybe much earlier - I don't think it's from a recent heist or anything, I first saw it about 5 years ago.

It's not that well hidden either. Just to the side of a reasonably sized footpath, amidst the pines.

There might be a cartoon character squashed underneath it.

It might not even be a safe.

It could be a really over-built drinks cabinet or something.

Looks very much like a safe though. Weighs very much like a safe too!

Due to it's location, I love to think that it was dropped out of a plane in an attempt to open it!

Okay okay, I have an over-active imagination.

Hi, only just found this forum and was amazed to see this question.
I first saw the safe in 1986 or 87, newly dumped and broken into. Informed the Police who took my details and as far as I know never visited the scene.
At that time it was easily possible to drive a vehicle up there and I assumed at the time it had been done the previous night given the trampled foliage and tyre tracks.
Hope this puts the matter to rest.
Look forward to sifting all the other threads now!!

ooohhhh! the plot thickens ....

and there we were, all thinking that the lack of interest in reported crimes shown by the boys in blue was a fairly recent phenomenon ... :P

Me and two other people have just hoiked an old safe out of my basement. It's got no key, and seems to be rusted solid. I don't know if Onyx will be prepared to take it away.

I'm tempted to put it on EBay: Free or nearest offer - buyer collects!

Back in the 1930's there was an old Sheffield custom that if you placed your money in a bank it would imediately lose value whereas if you left it alone in a safe in the middle of a wood it would bring you good luck. The hapless people of sheffield tried this for two years until they started to question why there was a safe in the middle of the woods and why was it emptied each night and why they had all only heard about this custom from one man- Horace chavitts of hyde park - legand has it that when they found out that chavitts was behid the hoax they rounded on him and tied him to the safe and left him there for twelve days - when they returned, to their horror, he had been eaten by bears and some squirrels and one or two badgers and possibly a cat...anyway all that was left was a note horace managed to scribble which read 'arrrrrrggggghhhh'
It is believed that if anyone tries to move it they will be struck with the curse of the chavitt - they will imediately start dressing like teenagers even into there late thirties, they will say the phrase 'at the end of the day' before any sentence they utter. They will find in poundland a shop filled with quality and intriguing ideas. They will breed like mice.

DON'T GO NEAR IT!!!:o
