I have a Rotel RA-312 amp with a fault on the right hand channel, with speakers connected it's distorted on the right hand channel. To make things more complicated, when using headphones the output of both channels is clear. This is with the speakers switched off,but if i switch speakers in and headphones connected the right channel is distorted on both the RH speaker and RH headphone.

Any ideas?

Have you tried swapping the speakers left to right to make sure it's not one of your speakers which is at fault?

Hi Crosser thanks for the reply, yes i have two sets of speakers and it's the same on both. Also tried another amp to make sure it wasn't the speaker.

A bit of a long shot, but you could try spraying a little switch cleaner on the headphone jack, I have known the little switch on the jack to not work properly because of tarnish on the metal switch parts inside.

It cant do any harm to try.

Did that when i first bought it off eBay,done it again just now and no change. What's throwing me is that the headphones output is ok,there is no seperate amp for headphones.

If the headphone jack is soldered to a pcb (rather rhan chassis mounted and wired) I'd suspect a dry joint on or near the jack next.

Failing that I cant think of anything else I'm afraid.

Have you checked the speaker cable? If it's not that, it sounds like it'll be a dodgy connection on the amp.

Crosser,it's a chassis phones socket wired and with 2 330 ohm resistors.

Resolve.

Yes I tried that, it's not the cable.

It sounds like you have tried the obvious things. I'd put a post up on diyaudio.com and see what you get back.

Ok thanks for that, I'll give it a try.
