Surely the "Sheffield" part of this title would make it "Sheffield Related" - I'm moaning and moving it :P

Whilst we're on the subject of moaning... I can't stand people who TYPE IN CAPITALS, go off the topic of the thread (posting personal messages/questions, etc...) or use loads of smilies!

BTW, NICE AVATAR GEOFF! :D  ;) :P :o

Rotherham is boring, grey and full of people who are too dumb to moan and i should know. Just take a look at the exam results for rotherham and compare them to sheffields. I took a drive round Dore/Ecclesall/Fullwood/Whirlow the other day just to remind myself there were actually places nearby that were nice!

Ps: Sorry for moaning.

Quit moaning and tell me something GOOD about Sheffield.
Oh sorry Tony that would change the topic of the thread......

Sigh, sigh, moan, moan, oh sorry again - wrong thread!!

   Just trying to cheer you all up.
Sorry, I'm being annoying. I'm stopping other people from getting their moansworth in.
Bye

Come off it - moaning is the world's most enjoyed pastime. Just look at all the letters in the newspapers.

Now that is a good thing.

Guaranteed, somebody is bound to moan about that and spoil everything.... Chips too soggy, price too high, portons too skimpy.
So leave off you wanna-be chip moaners. Find something else to moan about. Try the weather for a change.

Oh DB, I have a moan, where on earth is Newfield Green and how come my 60 bus won't drop me off right outside? I'm trying to get in the mood of the thread.

PaulTansley

Because Newfield Green is at Gleadless so the 60 will never arrive there.
My son will be moving up there soon, god knows why (moan moan) maybe its the chippy.

One thing that you quickly notice about Sheffield is that its inhabitants like a good old moan about the place, each other, the council, new buildings - in fact pretty much everything.

What's the reason for the negative vibe in Sheffield?

Moon Maiden

Perhaps it is more the fact that we do not agree with what is being done.

It isn't a case of moaning just opening our mouths instead of putting up and shutting up.

I agree with Tony, I think Sheffielders are some of the most negative people I have ever met. I find it incredibly frustrating that there is opposition to anything new: the more innovative and exciting, the more hostile the opposition.

I despair at the pettiness of some peoples concers too, I know Sheffield is supposed to be Britain's biggest village but I am only just realising that this is because we behave like a bunch of regressive village idiots.

Says Mattski from Nodnol?? If it comes down to being a moaning mini or having a hell hole like Nodnol I know where I would rather be.

:loopy:

You were saying about village idiots? I think you better hurry home they will miss you!

Interesting that you put it like that Moon Maiden. Trouble is that it does seem that anything resembling progress gets a few noisy protesters that loads of other people nod sagely with - maybe without thinking about it much for themselves. I'm sure that you especially support independent thinking?
A couple of good examples are;
1. The sculpture that was being paid for private donation and we got protests about "nasty modern art". Sheffield lost a world class piece of art there.
2. The new offices on the Peace Gardens. But did you know that the council only received 6 objection letters!!!

Name any significant development in Sheffield over the last 15 years or so, and you will find the usual "White Elephant" protest brigade.

The most ironic is the Peace Garden protest:

- those who protested that the previous Peace Gardens shouldn't be touched
- those who protested that the Peace Gardens / Heart of the City project shouldn't cost the ratepayers a penny
- those who protested that the nice new Peace Gardens shouldn't be spoiled by offices and a hotel: a double irony as the new Gardens are much better than the old, and the hotel & offices are the result of the previous protest!

If people were more positive about proposals for new investment in Sheffield, and looked about ways of making them work, then maybe there would be much more investment and jobs (like Leeds, Manchester, etc)

There really is a feeling outside of the "Sheffield Bubble" that it's just easier to stay on the motorway. Sheffield is usually too much trouble for investment.

Oh Moon,

You do make me smile. Perhaps you need to take time out of Sheffield, or a holiday from the pervading mentality of the place to get a true perspective.

Really sorry to dissapoint you sweetheart but I lived an worked in the south for over a year and as do many members of my family. I also spent over six months touring the theatres in Nodnol whilst on leave from my performing arts course.

Nasty modern art - you mean like that thing down the bottom of the moor that is no longer working? Wasn't it supposed to be a fountain of somesort that cost loads of money??? I have only seen it in it's present state - i.e a communal tip

Spending money on great pieces of artwork - modern or classical - is all well and good if it is maintained and appreciated by the populace - perhaps if the local council either revamped the area and piped some water init, it may help.

There are some very interesting points here...but my opinion is that those of us who know Sheffield moan because...the council are no good!

Grandiose council schemes that fail and end up costing tax payers a small fortune make us that way...

That and the cold weather (which has actually improved considerably since I was at school)

A Sheffielder through and through and I love the place. Worked in nearly all the major cities so I have seen a fair bit of the country
If London,Leeds,Manchester,Liverpool,Birmingham are all better places then may I suggest all of you people go and live there or is that idea too obvious. Oh yes and abdul ,if our culture is not right and you dont like the way things are done here i.e. not having some smelly old person clutteriing up the place or you just dont like the weather then airports may be found at any of the major cities listed above. I suggest you use one of them.

Alchresearch,

Have got a mate lives here who came from Manchester ages ago, and he swears you couldnt pay him enough to live back there now, so maybe its what you make of a new place or the way you adapt. Possibly you live in a middle class area over there.Maybe there is more of the type of culture that you are interested in over that side of the pennines. If I had to move from Sheffield, it would be Newcastle or Edinburgh.

Oh I tried. Leeds was much nicer, but too expensive, and it was actually full of thick, smelly Mancs (no offence Alch ;) )and Liverpool...well it's a good tourist attraction but I wouldn't recommend living there.

Don't live in Manchester city, but in Greater Manchester's boundaries, on the western outskirts.

Perhaps you could change the location in your profile as it says 'Manchester' not 'Greater Manchester's boundaries, on the western outskirts'.

You can see how easily it confused me.:)
