I remember Rangi Ram, the Indian character played by Michael Bates, in "It aint Half Hot, Mum!" used to have a snake belt round his turban.

my kids have got snake belts for their school trousers as they are easier for the youngest to fasten. I think I got them from Roz`s at the top of Abbey Lane.

Yes, I had my fair share of these.

Not as nice as Funk Belts which were all the rage c. 1980/1. Mine was white and I wore it on our family hols in Florida. Not that I was a fan of any particular jazz funk group (nor was anybody else, really). If you remember, you fed it through a buckle and left a large part of it dangling (ooh err missus).

I believe it's the nearest I ever got to being fashionable.

Funk belts were the coolest of belts! I had loads all in different colours, my fave was a bright yellow one(nice eh?)!:D

You might be surprised to learn that the snake belt buckle is a very old design, the Saxons and the Romans wore them.

Seeing them, you could mistake them for the schoolboy ones we all wore in the 1950's.

Had several as the elastic used to perish. Mind you it didn't help the fact we used to fasten them over our shins and use them like catapults to see who could get small stones to go furthest.

When I was a little kid I was made to wear "braces" (called suspenders over here). My parents used to say that belts were no good fer keepin yer trousers up. I hated wearing them.

Yes,I remember the snake belt too. But does anyone remember your mother making button hole type apertures in your shirt,to allow you to wear braces without them being seen. The connecting tabs coming through the apertures in the shirt to fasten to buttons on the trousers. Don't think it caught on much though, too much work involved.
