View Full Version : Bus companies + anti-social behaviour
NatalieSheff 11-01-2005, 14:20 does anyone know what a bus companies policies are on anti social beh? do they intervene? stop the bus? call for help?
i know of one chap who refused to let school kids on as they were messing about at bus stop.
what about smoking on the bus? graffiti? bullying?
it was better when we had conductors
When "Mainline" buses were running (dont know if they still are) The drivers had radios to contact the depot, and in turn contact the police, as an added thing, if the driver needed assistance, the bus would stop and put the hazard warning lights on.
NatalieSheff 11-01-2005, 15:06 and they did this if a fight broke out or whatever? what about the other things??
just doing something at work, thats why i ask..
For fights and personal attack Nat, dont know anything more.
if there was a fight the driver would would pull up and radio control who would then call police same with personall attacks if not to seriously hurt
NatalieSheff 11-01-2005, 15:18 any idea what they do with school kid problems? for example if a girls hair was set on fire or cut? or if driver heard racial abuse? would he risk getting involved and kicking em off?
when i was at school going on 15 years since now if there was a fight on bus driver would either pull up and throw who was fighting of there and then or ifwould pull up at hammerton police station if near by and get police on board use to happen quite a lot then the school would be informed and who ever was involed would be kick out of school and the bus taking of that school if it carried on now days drivers dont get invovled as much probaly due to the pay they get which has been metion before on forum they would radio in
muddycoffee 11-01-2005, 15:52 Well when I went to chaucer, to the lower school 22 years ago, the school bus was like a riot. The unruly thuggish behaviour was frightening, the bell was constantly pinged, the kids used to force their arms and legs out of the closed doors and even jump out of the bus while it was moving.
The driver used to drive straight to hammerton on a regular basis, but I was lucky not to be on. I used to get the quieter busses which were a bit further away like the 17, 89 and 2.
I really feel sorry for those drivers, that job must have been hell, those kids should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
NatalieSheff 11-01-2005, 15:54 kids have the notion of not being regulated on buses anymore..time for change i think
beansfeast 11-01-2005, 15:56 make all the kids wear seatbelts and the bus driver has a button for each seat that he can press to make them tighter if the kids are annoying hehehehe :hihi:
after school had finished we would go to stop bus stop up wood lane and we use to have teachers on bus stop duty they would stand on one side of bus door so you had to get on i straight line and pay driver if you where messing about in queue and driver saw you he tell teacher and you where not aloud on teachers then maed you wait till all school buses had gone then let you get normal service bus home on your own even school bus had no teachers on it after it had left

Must be awful trying to drive a bus and put up with passengers too. The old style buses where the drivers cab was up front and people got on at the back (like the London buses) probably made driving a bus much more pleasant.
Losing the bus conductors was, I think, a big mistake - but it all comes down to money doesn't it.
Got to say though, the drivers themselves aren't excluded from their own form of anti-social behaviour. I live quite close to an out of town bus 'terminus' and regularly see drivers going up and down the bus picking up litter and then throwing it off the bus onto the pavement. Others regularly leave the bus to urinate behind some bushes.

maybe thats thefault of sheffield city council !!!!
no public loo`s would you sooner the bus be late or not turn up because the driver is running in to town to use the only public loo`s in sheffield ?????????.
as for the entre of any passenger it is up to the driver of the bus he/she has the last say on any passenger getting on the bus under pcv reg. after all he is the one to blame if anything happens in the eye`s of the law

In the past I have been on busses which has pulled up next to public toilets while the driver used them. Now all these toilets are barred and say "closed by order" or have been boarded/bricked up completely.
Also am I right in suspecting that some of the modern busses are fitted with air conditioning? If so, this will make the situation worse for the driver as it is very dehydrating, and you have to make sure you drink plenty of water. Otherwise they will spend the whole day with a stinking headache.

When i used to be a Driver i had no choice but to go behind the bushes or use the back tyre, due to lack of Toilets on the road. Take the number 30 from Mosborough through to Dore. From leaving the depot to driving to the pick up point, driving the Bus around the route then waiting for the next driver to take me off then driving back to depot is a trip of over 4 hours. The only toilet on route was at Knowle Lane up at Ecclesall road south and this has now been closed by the council.
And as for litter if the passengers didnt leave Coke cans or wrappers from Greggs on the floor then the driver would not be throwing them off the Bus.
Muddycoffee, To answer your question the Buses are not fitted with Air Con. Im now glad i have an office job with toilets and Air Con!

.
its people abusing public facilities that got them closed. We still have a few in Barnsley, but they are plastered with Police notices.
When i was younger and caught buses, the driver would stop off for a paper and make conversation with the passengers.
maybe we should bring back clipping naughty kids at back of ear that are naughty. never did me any harm
In the past few years the only public toilet outside of the city centre that I've found still open and operational was in Broomhill...other areas of Sheffield are not so lucky!
My great uncle used to live at Stocksbridge and ride the last bus back from Sheffield after a night out in Sheffield. When leaving the pub he always bought two bottles of beer and gave one to the driver as he got on. The beer was a bribe so that when he tapped on the glass of the driver's cab, the recipient of the free beer would obligingly pull over and allow him to nip off for a pee in the bushes whilst the rest of the passengers sat and waited.
How times have changed.
NatalieSheff 12-01-2005, 11:17 what about that one in centre of town near town hall where you pay ten pence to go in, wasnt it owned by a husband and wife?
I did say "outside the city centre"!

throw me a bone here! i have to speed read as at work!!:D
missnorks 12-01-2005, 11:30 Back to the point about strapping kids into seats with a button to make the belts tighter should they misbehave- me thinks drivers should be equiped with a button that sends an electric shock- (not enough to kill or maim- though this would be good for some disrespectful little chavs- just enough to shock!!) through the unruly little b******s. Should do the trick!
beansfeast 12-01-2005, 12:13 Got another idea!
How about making all buses 'open top' double deckers and sticking the chav's up there if they misbehave. Knowing the Sheffield weather it should dampen their spirits a little...
Then if they misbehave further, the ejector seats are the final option :hihi:
hi, does anyone find the bus service entirely unreliable?? I have to catch the number 8 to my college in Firth Park and it's always late!!! The trouble is it's not always the same amount of minutes late so I still have to stand there for 10 minutes in case. Because of this i have to catch it an hour early!
Today, I stood for 3/4 of an hour (despite being disabled- and like everyone else freezing!) while one bus didn't even come and the next one was late! I only missed the first one because it came early!!!!
I cannot wait until I pass my driving test and get a car! It's all very well trying to persuade us to use public transport but it's not reliable!
beansfeast 12-01-2005, 12:33 Don't even get me started on late buses!! I use the 20 and it is diabolical!
At best 4 come along at once, at worst you have to wait 45mins for a bus... and the timetable says they are now 'At Least' every 10mins - I'd like to know when they have 10mins between them and I'll catch one of those thank you!
After several complaints by myself and several other people I know, nothing is ever done and no compensation is ever offered...

Did you know we have a special button in the cab that makes all the traffic go away.
Maybe the buttons on the number 20 are faulty.
These buttons also perform other functions, such as removing all the pot holes in the road, syncronise the bus so it runs exactly to the time stated on the timetable,it also operates the moving walkway down the middle of the bus, look closely and you will see it in operation as it shuffles all the passengers into position and places them in their seats,,,,,,amazing stuff.
Toilets should be provided for the drivers when they reach a terminus point. Particularly down here in Woodhouse where the 52 stops. It's not the drivers fault that they have to go behind the bushes but that doesn't make it any less anti-social for the rest of us stood at the bus stop or walking past. It's not a nice situation, lots of young kids gather around there too.
I spoke to someone at the bus place about it last year and he asked me to contact the council and try to put some pressure on them to provide more toilets. I've tried, but guess my lone voice isn't loud enough. Urinating in public is an offence, but what are people supposed to do when there are very few public toilets end even fewer that are anything like clean.
As for the litter though, there are no excuses for drivers collecting up all the litter/cans/bottles left on the bus and just throwing them all over the pavement - unless you know different?
Years ago I got on the bus to go to town, I had my 12 yr old son with me. We sat together, plenty of spare seats, when I was aware of a women asking the person behind my son to move his bag so she could sit behind me. A few stops further on I felt a burning sensation on my back. I realised she had dropped a lighted cigerette between me and the seat. and I was smoludering. I turned round and said "you did that deliberately, you changed your seat to do that." I was furious and nobody on the bus said a word.
I said to my son "will you be embarrasedif I make a fuss". he said "no I'll ignore you."
So I went to the front and complained to the driver. Who said what can I do. I said she tried to burn me. It's your bus and it's not right. Soooo he slamed the breaks on locked the bus doors, wouldn't let anyone off and in the middle of Darnall rushhour he phoned for the police.
2 police men and a women came. They had had the report that 2 women were fighting on the bus ( definitely not true )
By this time people were a little more sympathetic. but late for work One man said "they will never believe this "
The police took her with them after I 'd had a load of abuse from her. She said "You think you are Queen of England you " When all I had done was get on a bus.!
But I feel the driver did his best for his passenger.

Well to be honest, the council probably doesn't want to pay for the upkeep of lots of public lavatories. And the other thing is people constantly spreading rumour about drug users and cottagers. I would much rather we citizens had somewhere to go which is a bit seedy than have to pee behind the bushes or bins.
