View Full Version : This may be a stupid question, but... (quilted postcards)

Our latest project at the art group I attend is 'quilted postcards'.
We are doing them mostly by hand and I am now on the home work bit where I am using some of the silk threads I have (which I've bought for when I start my cross stitch). Does any one have any tips for splitting the threads? Is there a knack to this? At the moment I'm getting in a right tangle and it's driving me mad!

Thanks in advance!

Keeping the lengths fairly short, and gently pulling one strand at a time, whilst keeping a grip in the remaining ones seems to work for me.

Thanks for that maramcp! My nails seem to be getting in the way (and they never usually do!) and it's taking longer to separate the threads than the actual stitching!

I seem to think it works best if you hold one end (eg between your knees) and then pull the whole thing fairly taut - then you can separate off a single thread from the other end and pull it down towards your knees (the end you are holding).
Or get some one else to hold one end for you...

DOes that make any sense at all??!!

Thanks for that rachelg - that seems to work better. Finally I can get cracking!

Finished my quilted post card and a picture can be seen on the 'post your craft photos here' thread - thanks for looking!
