Hi all

I'm brazilian and have done a few years of BJJ a long time ago and have been in Sheffield for a few years now.

At the moment I am looking forward to get athletic again and was looking for a good BJJ class. I've done a few months at the Castle Black Belt (Heeley) under 2 different instructors: Andy (a blue belt at the time) from Sheffield, and Nilson (wicked black belt from Brazil) but that was years ago.

I've been looking all over this forum and haven't heard anything about Castle offering BJJ. One of my colleagues from the time Nilson was teaching there told me about the Hillsborough academy but for some reason I can't find it in here.

Is there anyone of my fellow countrymen teaching BJJ in here, or any black belt for that matter?
And also, where?

Any info appreciated.

Hi

Theres Gracie Barra operating out of a place near Sheff 2, and there is Black belt instruction there

Theres the Royce Gracie club who train mon and wed (wednesdays is at Grave lesuire cent)

and there used to be a shootfighting club at 393 (is it still going?) near Morrisons.

Enjoy your training and watch out for the bloke who gets you in triangle chokes and then farts. :gag: he trains in the local area

Thanks Mini_Cooper

I'm thinking in giving a go at 2 of them to see the difference. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Royce Gracie with Steve Masden and the Gracie Barra, which is near my work.

Still would like to know more about the instructors at Gracie Barra though.

Cheers

alright then

i train with steve marsdon on mondays and mark bottom on wednesdays. both classes are Royce Gracie Yorkshire Derbyshire.

mondays is held at the henry fanshaw school, dronfield between 8 - 10 pm. this is a more traditional brazilian class (you will be able to tell us more about that!) with Gi

wednesdays class is held at Graves leisure centre from 7 - 10 in the badminton hall. you will see a big group of us inthe changing rooms. this class is more of a MMA/ BJJ and goes no gi, than mondays but its a good mix of size and experience.

look forward to seeing you mate and if you ave any problems please PM me or BJJMONKEY, THE_RAGE, LANKYMANBJJ and we can fill you in with the details

Thanks for the info iamthemoon.
That was just what I wanted to know about the times.
I'm considering now coming to the class on monday to have a feel of it before jumping straight into No-Gi action.

I'm out of shape and haven't been on a mat for years so want to get back slowly into it. I've done 2 years of it but that was 10 years ago, before the whole world knew about Royce Gracie or UFC ;).

Might try the Gracie Barra tomorrow if I can, and see which academy offers more of what I'm looking for. Will give them guys a call today.

Many thanks guys

Hi, thanks for the interest, firstly we train monday 6-8 wed 6-8 and sunday 11-1, our classes are taken by John Goldson (TrueBJJ on this forum) a purple belt under Luico "Lagarto", every other sunday is our Blackbelt Class taken by Lagarto (he is in Brazil at the moment but his replacment is a black belt called Gabriel {spelling}) we offer both gi and no gi classes.

Prices are £5 per class (£12 for Black belts) but your first one is free, we dont charge monthly so if you dont want to train you don't loose out.

We also have regular contact with the other Gracie Barra Schools and so we can offer classes with Roger Gracie, Braulio Estema, Victor Estema and many more a few times a year, as for kimonos.. i don't know off hand, shop around. you don't need one to train with us so dont feel you have to rush out and buy one.

ANY other questions if i've missed anything sorry i'm in a rush to get to training, just PM me or John

Hello. Does anyone know of any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clubs in Sheffield? If so can you give me any street names/class times/prices, etc? (i'm particularly interested in no-gi training).

Thanks a lot.

I think you are getting a little confused. This thread is about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Ju Jitsu (even spelt differently) taught on Abbeydale Road is traditional or Japanese Ju Jitsu. There is some crossover in techniques, but a very different approach to training. I'm sure your boyfriend's club is very good at what they do; but in terms of groundfighting BJJ is light years ahead of traditional Ju Jitsu..in my humble opinion! :P Noel

BJJ and traditional JJ are totally different sports, best to try both and see which you prefer, if its purely grappling your after its BJJ, if its more stand up then Traditional JJ.

Hope this helps
Craig.

Actually Noel you are slightly wrong... but hey!!! Good luck in your no it all life!!!

Would you care to expand please?

P.S. if you mean 'know it all life', then I'm not sure that really applies to Noel having met him on occassion. In addition he did use the words 'humble opinion'

No problem - most of my congregation have said worse things to me :hihi: Many of us tend to get a bit precious about our martial arts. I said what I did because you mentioned ground fighting which is 'our thing'. As well as my love for BJJ I have trained in traditional ju jitsu for a number of years, so hopefully the opinion has a little knowledge behind it and is not just bias. The Abbeydale programme looks good and perhaps I would have stuck around in TJJ if they had more ground fighting, sparring and pad work like your boyfriend's club has.

AS FOR CARCASS! Well if you really want a challenge then I would drag my old and infirm body on the mat if that's what you want...bjj or vale tudo? I can't believe you want to fight me and to think I have you as my screensaver (all very decent just a pic of a seminar we were both at!) Hope to see you at training soon. Noel
