Hi

You may be referring to part of the General Cemetery, the bit by the Montague St climbing boulder. I've not heard it called that before. We call it the Anglican area or Doorstep Green (after the funding source that paid for the recent restorations). 367 - where did you come across the name ?

If it is that one, then originally it was the Anglican part of the site, set out by Robert Marnock (also designer of Weston Park and the Botanical Gardens) in 1850. He had already laid out the non-conformist side of the cem in 1836.

Why are there no gravestones ? Because the original cemetery company went bankrupt in the 1950's, and after a period where it was further rundown by a speculative property development company the council were forced to take it on in a disasterous state in the mid-70's. They made a decision that - I hope to God - won't be taken anywhere ever again. They put a bill through Parliament to close the cemetery for burials and to remove the gravestones to create a parkland area in the Anglican bit. Unfortunately, like in every other council in the land there was no investment in the eighties to make it a decent place to visit, and the paths and grass just decayed.

The friends group formed in the late eighties to raise money and try and stop the rot. In 2004/5 the parkland area was taken back (as far as possible, given the change in visitor use since Victorian times) to the original Marnock ground plan. There are now new paths, flower beds, benches and improved drainage around the river Porter at the bottom.

We're very happy for people to use it as a park, but please respect the site, use the litterbins provided, and clean up after your dog. ;) The Sharrow Lantern Festival takes place there every year in April, and its really popular in summer with picnicking families, lads having a kickabout and frisbee throwers. :)

Hi Insidestory, thanks for you reply. I don't think it will be. I heard it mentionned last week as a venue for some kind of festival next year that's all and that's the reason i wanted to know where it is.

I can't see it happening in the General Cemetery to be honest!

I've lived in Sheffield since 1980 and have always called it Cemetary park, I must have heard it from Sheffielders. Since then never heard it called Anglican area or Doorstep Green.
