Hi is anyone able to help me out about something ?
I have just connected to blueyonder with tele west and I have found that my computer is not able to install it.
The reason being that my processor is too slow and it does not have enough ram on it.
I thought with it being windows 98 second edition that there woul'd not be a problem but there is,will I be able to upgrade or will it be easier to buy another system?

I think you might need XP. Whats the spec of the machine? if it's anything less than 1gz processor you may as well upgrade. Someone on here is selling an XP base unit which will be fine for between £100 and £150.

I find that Win 98 as an Operating System works fine with Blue Yonder. But I do agree with the last post, you will need to buy another machine.

I have an old commodre 64 somewhere - should be twice as fast if not more than your current spec -

joking aside - lookout for computer fair advertised in the local rags- their was one last week at don valley - you should be able to pick up a decent spec machine for a couple of hundred quid

Then you can spend the next 2 years following computer fairs round the country, trying to find the people who sold it to you becuase it does not work!!
 ;)

have you had the installation from telewest now?

If you've got the cable, the modem and it's turned on at their end you should be able to connect without there annoying bit of software.

Hi cyclone yes I had telewest install it all this morning .

hold tight for them to turn it on then before going out to buy a new pc. You should find that it works fine anyway. I've not installed their software in 3 years and not had any problems.

Not too sure what you mean by turning it on as far as I know it shoul'd be working.
everything is connected up its just the modem it too slow.

Sorry I meant the processor is too slow.

Not sure whether you have understood what people were trying to say. The minumum spec quoted is to use the blueyonder support software, not to actually access the internet. If your PC will run Internet Explorer or some other web browser then you should be fine.

as far as your pc is concerned all that's changed is that a network connection is available.

The software that they provide on the cd just configures the pc to use the network and provides a few rather pointless utilities.

Even a 286 could use telewest broadband through the network interface if it's configured correctly.

I thought it took them a few days to activate the connection.

Are all the lights lit up on the modem they provided?

royjames

yes all the lights are working fine.

and have you tried connecting to the internet using the broadband? or are you dialled in?

The connection was live while the engineer was here when I had mine installed. However he seemed unable to configure the Cable Modem to use my ethernet card and instead had it setup using the USB port which was a bit of a waste.

Also if it does use the USB port in your setup there may be issues with the drivers not working with such a low spec pc or not been compatible with win98.

yes its broadband and its all set up . I put the disk in and run the instructions and it said it had failed to meet the minimum speficications.

well i wouldn't worry about it then, there's nothing on that disk that you actually need.

I am sure I have spoke to people who have had driver issues with win98 and had to install XP...

roy does your "modem" connect to your computer using a network cable? If so you can throw out that blueyonder disk, plug your network card on the computer into the back of the modem, switch the modem on and reboot the computer. Bingo - internet connection.

Technically speaking there's no reason for you not to be able to get your PC working with an Ethernet connection to your cable modem (assuming it has the relevant socket, obviously).

However there are some other things to consider when it comes to security, pragmatics of the whole thing.

1. Win98 is very old and no longer supported so any future security loopholes are unlikely to be patched...

2. Such a low spec machine will have a hard time running the usual run of security suites such as anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware utilities that are now essential... So your machine may feel like it's swimming through treacle.

3. Win98 loves to keel over and die at the first hint of a program hitting a problem, unlike Win2000, XP, etc... so coupled with the low resources, speed of use, etc. you're highly likely to see the system kark it every 30 minutes or so... Not fun.

You can get a reasonable specification bare bones basic machine now for around £250 or so (look at Dell) or if you really want to skimp, think about looking for some extra RAM and at least upgrading that to 64mb or even more if you can manage it...

All in all though, your machine is essentially past it... so start saving..

just ignore what the disc says and install anyway since september all telewest broadband installs have been "self install" the tech who installed will have made a phone call and got the modem "hit" (got info sent to the modem regarding connection speed) if the top 4 lights are solid green then the modem is connected to the internet and is working, no one should ever have to wait for connection after the install, the tech phones in and closes the job if the modem is not connected then he has to wait until it is.
there is a compatibility issue wiht win 98 but there is an update on the disc to rectify this, the issue is with usb support
and yes i did use to be a tech !!!!!!
