I'm about to start plasterboarding my loft room and I wondered if anyone knew the most effective way of soundproofing?

I want to be able to play my music at a reasonable volume and not wake the kids sleeping next door.. the walls are so thin in my mid terrace I can hear the kids next door like they're in the same room!

I know theres special blue plasterboard which is supposed to be sound proof and the plasterer suggested just using 4 layers of normal plasterboard.. but which is best or is there another solution?

Also, I'm going to be laying a new floor in there so would putting a rubber membrane of some sort under the floorboard cut down some noise too?

I would like to know this too if possible.

I had heard that a lot of music studios use a material like carpet underlay underneath the plasterboard? Wonder if whacking some carpet up would deaden the sound?

As there are numerous solutions an idea of your budget would be helpful :)

As cheap as possible.. I'm only doing one wall as the guy on the otherside isn't a problem as I never hear anything from his side and he's partially deaf so I presume I don't annoy him with my noise.

I'd spend £150 or there abouts getting materials..

Is acoustic rockwool a solid sheet of stuff or like normal rockwool?

Rockwool? Nasty irritating stuff! Is the more modern natural wool any good at sound insulating?

Acoustic rockwool is like normal insulating rockwool.

Egg boxes are no good, you may as well just use wallpaper! If it's just to keep the sound from getting out, then you need something that's good at absorbing bass frequencies. Plasterboard is good, but if you use layers of materials even better, eg, a wooden batton frame around the walls and nail the plaster board to that, the cavities between the walls and the plaster need to be filled with something high in air content, something fibrous like rockwool or something. thick curtains are ok for higher frequencies.
