A step in the right direction if you ask me! Meaks 14-09-2007, 10:00 Yes I've seen it out loads and have wondered what they are doing. I suspect there is no real practical reason behind it. Edit: Cross-posted with angenlina. So he really generates his own electricity with an old ironing board? Halibut 14-09-2007, 10:04 The guy who does the little windmill thingies is, I believe, the shop keepers brother. He's a really pleasnt guy and happy to chat with passers-by about his creations. I don't think he's actuallt running the shop on wind generated power, angenlina - he wouldn't get enough juice out of those things. As Meaks suggests, I think it's just something the guy does for his own amusement - and Amen to that! jayne67 14-09-2007, 10:11 Is that Halleys Comet? Is the shop actually open? I have seen this guy also, but the shop looks disused. Maybe I'm not looking close enough!! Jayne Halibut 14-09-2007, 10:31 Is that Halleys Comet? Is the shop actually open? Jayne The shop is next door to what was Halleys Comet (I think) - looks like they're using it as their living accomodation. Bilge 14-09-2007, 15:05 I think he's great, definitely brightens the place up. Langsett Rd has loads of these odd little shops that never seem to sell anything or even appear open. I don't get it. armandswench 18-06-2008, 19:42 Just wondering if anyone else has seen the guy how usually stands outside an old shop near morrisons on Langsett road. He is always surrounded by an odd assortment of home made windmills or propella type inventions. They are usually created out of what looks like old bike wheels and plastic and fixed to chairs. Any ideas what hes doing? mgblade 18-06-2008, 19:44 i see him when i go to work on the tram always wondered what he,s doing just looks very wierd to me. fredsredhat 18-06-2008, 19:58 I've talked to him a few times in passing. He's a very intelligent man with ideas of designing a cheap wind turbine for 3rd world countries. Thing is he's using cheap parts out of what ever he can find rather than proper bits for the job. S6 D.I.Y 18-06-2008, 20:17 yes he makes electicity from the turbines.he is a persian man he has parkinsons but is a very clever man. sheffandy 18-06-2008, 20:36 I personally think it's getting out of hand, the other day when I went past he had a 5ft/6ft high propeller with large blades turning pretty fast,on a stand. It was at head height ,what if a visually impaired person had walked straight into it? I'm sure if I had a shop selling windmills and tried displaying them on the pavement then the council would be on me like a ton of bricks! S6 D.I.Y 18-06-2008, 20:46 its not a shop anymore its his home where he lives with his two daughters one of whom is a member on here ptigga 18-06-2008, 20:58 I personally think it's getting out of hand, the other day when I went past he had a 5ft/6ft high propeller with large blades turning pretty fast,on a stand. It was at head height ,what if a visually impaired person had walked straight into it? There's always someone who, when shown something new, will try to pointing out dubious ways that someone *could* injure themselves. It seems to a british fascination (possibly borrowed from the Americans). The rest of the world just get on with it. If it's his obsession, why doesn't he go to a park or wide open space then to practice his hobby instead of a busy pavement? These are to be found outisde most of the corporate giants units. The Langsett Rd guy is a fascinating guy / eccentric/ wierdo dependant on your viewpoint and next time you see his propellers spinning in almost zero wind then appreciate his genius. Maybe he will be asked to move from the pavement if they are causing an obstruction. wykewatson 19-06-2008, 07:26 well done to this man who has parkinsons disease. at least he is trying to get a life. not shutting himself up in the house feeling sorry for himself.must make his day talking to people and gtiving happiness to the people who talk to him.regarding safety. what about the many loose paving slabs we occasionally fall over!!! beansforyou 19-06-2008, 07:47 If more people were off their arses being imaginitive and 'having a go' at things that may look silly, we might not be in the energy strangelhold we find ourselves in. His genius??? They have been selling little windmills that kids stick into sandcastles at the seaside for donkey's years! Hardly the work of a genius. fredsredhat 19-06-2008, 21:38 His genius??? They have been selling little windmills that kids stick into sandcastles at the seaside for donkey's years! I used to do dynamic balancing on turbines and generators for a living so i talked to him about this and he taught me a thing or 2! his "windmills" are VERY efficient. logiebaird 19-06-2008, 22:06 His genius??? I got talking to him about the windmills and he showed me how he makes electric, he's trying to invent some type of transport that runs by electric generated by the wind. I asked him if he sold any of the windmills and he replied no, but went into his shop and gave me one for free - really nice fella! fritzthecat 19-06-2008, 23:08 I often go past on the tram and see him outside tinkering with the windmills, its good to see someone doing somthing constructive, you never know, he might just come up with somthing really clever that will help us all..i mention James Dyson and his bagless vacuum cleaner, he touted it around all the major hoover manufactures, and what did they all say, your mad, it will never take off..look where he is now, and how many of us own 1 or a variation of it copied by these same hoover manufactures!! He started in his shed just tinkering, so hats off to the guy, he enjoys what he is doing, how many of us can say the same about what we do for the best part of our day??? I was in my mates shop the other week and the guy was running back and forth with a windmill in his hands. Now, not every shop in Hillsborough can boste such wierd entertainment, I thought I was participating in an ephisode of - The League of Gents or Little Britain. We should appreciate such excentric people and the novel entertainment they provide. Leave the old guy alone, he's happy and been doing this hobby for years and never hurt anyone. sheffandy 14-03-2009, 09:27 I've changed my mind. Think I'll try and chat to the old fella next time I walk past, didn't realise he was trying to generate electric! If he's successful,I'd rather buy it off him then 'give' my money to E-On! He would have truly enjoyed this beautiful weather today, continuing with his renewable energy projects, an interest that I have appreciated from childhood. His passionate commitment to the development of energy solutions has inspired many in recent years (understandably, progression was limited following the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease). Primarily he was a great father. His vision, dedication, optimism and kindness was extraordinary and a true blessing for us. Second, he was a gas and electrical engineer for over 30 years, ran business on Cemetery Road, Barber Road and Langsett Road (S&S domestic appliances, G&E domestic appliances, Halley’s Comet). Only after these accomplishments, he proudly pursued renewable energy projects at his leisure, powering parts of our home, indeed humbly aspiring to create a device that would assist deprived communities. Those of you who had the pleasure of seeing/speaking to him when passing our home may have been amused/entertained, annoyed with the obstruction, impressed by either the devotion to the project or the project itself (depending on how much background knowledge you possess) or maybe just enjoyed a cup of tea as the victim of dad’s ramblings on renewable energy! Either way, everything that he did will be celebrated by those close to him, family and friends, for years to come. Cheers, SM Bilge 21-04-2010, 14:09 Thanks for that SM, very interesting. Langsett Road isn't the same without the windmills! S.M1 24-04-2010, 23:26 No problem. It was interesting, his project had generated huge interest, his work was published in the press and he received several business offers for his design. Typically appealing to most I would imagine, but one thing dad was not was a sell out! It was really nice that he got so much attention that he never expected, he was always felt flattered yet was modest, never felt pestered, never moaned, nothing phased him. :) Thanks for reading. SM Taximark 27-05-2010, 20:52 Very sad to here about your father SM, i used to stop and talk to your dad alot at night when i was working and had a little spare time on my hands, i found him a very intresting and intelligent man, the last time i spoke to him he had just returned from Iran. S.M1 10-01-2011, 00:26 Just saw this, thank you taximark, he was indeed. Cheers |
