View Full Version : First Blue Bins, now Blue Boxes
Just had a blue box delivered in which to put my tins, jars and textiles for recycling. Has anyone else had one? Although I have a Sheffield phone number my postal district is in Rotherham, so perhaps it's a RMBC thing.
Where the hell am I going to keep it? It is quite large and very blue. Apparently I have to put it outside every second week with my wheelie bin, before 7am. It doesn't have a lid so leaving it outside isn't really an option as it will get full of water. After two weeks it will be quite heavy and I have quite a trek to take my bin to the collection point, let alone struggling with the box as well.
I don't think I'll be using it somehow. I'm all for recycling, but I'm not enamoured of the idea of getting up earlier to deposit said box at end of road. I think I'll just shove it in the garage out of the way. I can't get fined can I for not using it ?
tinajones 27-08-2003, 21:28 i haven't got one yet but have several bags full of aforementioned recycleables. get dem RMBC bwad boyz round my joint. immediatley. drop the blue box baby. it would be a good look.
maybe you could post up a diagram of the downstairs of your home with possible homes for the box clearly annotated (in blue of course), then us forumsters could vote where you should keep the box.
with regards to the blueness perhaps a 'picasso blue period' theme could be added to the interiors of the chosen room so as not to draw attention to the plastic item.
put the box out the night before so you can spend your 7ams in bed.

Forgot to tell you - we get TWO wheelies, one for just rubbish, weekly collection, and one for recyclable stuff, fortnightly. Wonder how much ordinary rubbish finds its way into the recycle bin?
Great subject, though.

In S36 we have had blue boxes for years, then we were told we were having blue bins for paper and card.
In the blue box we put glass and tins and newspapers but we can now only recycle paper. The blue box collection has stopped for economic reasons so now all my glass and tin goes into my ordinary wheelie bin.
So much for recycling. It is not convenient to take bags of glass and tin to the recycling centre at Deepcar as I do not drive and I am not taking a 2 bus journey to do it. I like recycling but really Sheffield City Council is not using its brains :o
There is less being recycled than there was before:?
I've asked this before but nobody seemed to know. Are these Blue Bins chipped? I have heard of some bins that are chipped and the weight recorded on the back of the bin wagon and I wondered if it was these.
Classic Rock 28-08-2003, 15:11 I've never found out yet when my blue bin is meant to be collected. It is full but never been put out to be emptied. :?

Should be a sticker on top of the bin giving collection dates. If it's not there then look on a neighbour's bin or go to the council web site and look there or ring environmental services and ask them or contact your local councillor who should be able to find out for you.
Great idea Tina, but I literally do not have a space where it would not be highly visible. It wouldn't fit in with my colour scheme in any room. I could put it in the cellar but then I'd be up and down all the time with tins, bottles etc. Oh dear, what a dilemma. So hablas espanol entonces.
Not sure about the bins being chipped, but the boxes certainly aren't (well not yet, it might be when I've chucked it down the cellar steps!) They are just bog standard plastic storage type boxes in a hideous bright blue colour
maxwell1945 19-02-2010, 17:55 Just read about the new blue boxes that are to be distributed. My blue bin has been left outside today to be collected along with the rest of the street but where are Veoila,is that their name ?,blue bin not collected and the weekend is upon us.Have read about councils fining people for not bringing their bins in promptly how about Sheffield council fining Veiola.I think they are taking the p~~ out of us .Why cannot everthing go in one bin like it does in other countries and be sorted mechanically by magnets etc for tins .Before long we will be expected to take our bins to the local tip.Talking about tips do you think the staff employed at these places have to under go a charisma by pass to be employed there.
What 'other countries'?
When holidaying in Italy, you have to take ALL of your sorted rubbish to the nearest recycling point, within easy walking distance - no 'personal' refuse bins at all!
Come to think, Amsterdam has a similar system
We don't know we're born with our kerbside collections from right outside our houses
Grandad.Malky 19-02-2010, 18:16 Black bin

Blue box
Blue bag
Never mind it all keeps Wildcat and the doom and gloom brigade happy.
My hubby seems to think that the blue bin we currently have for paper will be used for glass & cans after the next collection & that we will have a blue box for paper.
I think its a good idea as we always have several bags next to the bin full of glass etc to take for recycling. I hate throwing this stuff in the normal bin so it will save us a job. I also hate standing at the glass bin throwing all the bottles in one at a time.

Yes that's right, in the next 4/5 weeks I won't have to take all the glass, plastic & cans to the tip (recycling centre) any more :D I'm just worried the box won't be big enough for all the paper & card we seem to accumulate  and will it blow away when put on the kerbside!

hard2miss 19-02-2010, 18:49 They can shove mine where the sun dont shine. Ill burn the lot on the back yard rarther than have it all over the place.
This is what happens when you privertize public organisations. I bet this has nothing to do with the district heating system being able to burn paper and card cheaper and cut down on their sorting costs.

Don’t give them ideas, how long before we get them?
Rotherham area, thats us in S25, get a blue bag for papers, and a blue box for tins and glass, I got a lid for my blue box from the council, but had to pay a £1 for it.

Binsniffer 19-02-2010, 19:48 getting rid of wheely bins in favour of boxes is surely a good thing, for one it will make you think about what you buy and the packaging that it comes in and two it gives the scrotes on council estates less to set on fire and maybe save a few lives in the process. Stop moaning about triviality when more and more people are falling below the bread line every day..

We don't know we're born with our kerbside collections from right outside our housesThey do in France as well as Denmark, then again I remember pop being sold in glass bottle we could take back to the shops... None of the that plastic bockle imposed on us AND the recycling of. We're blamed for everything! I don't remember asking for plastic bags in favour or paper bags or plastic bockles in favour of glass. The manufacturers have decided to produce and give us hard to recycle and hard to re-use material.
Berberis 19-02-2010, 20:23 Just had a blue box delivered in which to put my tins, jars and textiles for recycling.

lafemme51 19-02-2010, 21:12 I lived in RMBC previously (now Sheff) and for years we had the fortnightly "recyle" collection week where you put out your blue box for glass and metal, your blue bag for newspapers and your green bin for garden rubbish and cardboard.
In Sheff where I am at mo we have a blue box which is just for cardboard which is fine, but then I have a black bin which I put glass and tins in - I'll welcome the blue box as I don't like putting glass and cans etc into the black bin.
The only downside is the aesthetics of all the bins lined up at home!
i had a blue bin that vanished and apart from that there is no recycling in stocksbridge unless you put it in your car and take it to the co-op carpark but then again you are defeating the object by polluting the atmosphere with your so called governmental data from your cars emissions, dont get me started on the green thing when it is bloody cold out here

Does that mean you would have to change your name to boxsniffer.
Is the change Sheffield-wide? And if so, where's the info from? We don't use our blue bin because we don't have enough paper to throw out - has there been a leaflet stuck to them or something? I'm quite keen on having glass/plastic recycling because we use a lot of it.

I don't mind the blue bin for bottles and tins and the grey bin for other stuff but if I fill the paper box up and it chucks it down and it triples in weight, they can cuckoo if they think I'm lugging it even 10 metres to the top of the drive. Or maybe they're on wheels with a lid to keep it dry and stop it blowing all over the city?
They do in France as well as Denmark, then again I remember pop being sold in glass bottle we could take back to the shops... None of the that plastic bockle imposed on us AND the recycling of. We're blamed for everything! I don't remember asking for plastic bags in favour or paper bags or plastic bockles in favour of glass. Sod recycling! What happened to re-USING?!? It wasn't just pop bottles that went back for the return of the deposit, and veg never used to come in polystyrene trays! Trying to shop with minimum waste is a complete nightmare... and how often have I been stood there with a fabric bag only for a cashier to pack a plastic one in front of me... and for me to take a minute to register what's just happened and have to unpack her bag into mine?
Thats the way this country is going
Bring it on! Recycling on every street corner, and properly recyclable packaging too!!
We've had foreign Coke that's had paper labels with no adhesive, and caps that come off bringing their security collar with them, leaving all three pieces in a perfect condition for recycling - unlike the jumble of junk 'British' Coke leaves us with!
Alastair 21-02-2010, 00:05 It's good that the old blue bins will now be collected every fortnight and you can fill them with bottles. Previously we were recycling our bottles ourselves at the local supermarket.
As for the paper collection boxes, just drill a few holes in the bottom so that excess rainwater can drain out of them so they don't become too heavy. Soggy paper is just as recycleable as dry paper.
OK I'm pleased they'll finally be collecting bottles/tins etc - it's always puzzled me how everywhere else seems to recycle stuff except Sheffield. However I'll have to find somewhere else to stash my compost and so on now I'll be using the blue bin ;)
I'm a bit worried about the garden waste scheme - one bag emptied every four weeks? Nowhere near enough for me. So I hope we won't be getting snoopers on our black bins...

As far as I know garden waste is acceptable in Sheffield black bins.
iansheff 21-02-2010, 12:03 So what happens to all the shredded paper when it has blown all over the street will they have someone coming around with the bin wagon to fine you for littering when it has blown out the box?
shazatko 21-02-2010, 12:11 im in doncaster and we have a black and green bin then the green box for bottles and plastic the green wheely is for garden waste which is emptied every fortnight as the black wheely for other waste some other parts have the blue wheely too it wont be long before the garden is full of bins and boxes

It'll be emptied every 2 weeks but I still think it'll be too small! Our blue bin is always crammed full.
Im in S26 and have a green bin two black bins and a blue box.... I forget what goes where but it all seems a bit pointless if you ask me!

Sounds like a well thought out plan by the council then.

Surely the boxes will have lids otherwise when the are full of soggy paper the collectors will have problems emptying them (elf & safety)
We've always had blue boxes for tins and jars, you get a big plastic bag for newspapers which is meant to accompany the blue box they come complete with lids.

But do they? According to the letter from Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed in last nights Star, the boxes that are for the card and paper will come with a 'hat or net' so the contents will not blow away. A net is no good at all if there is shredded paper in the box it will simply create a mess when it blows out of the box, or are the council looking to create new jobs by employing someone to clear the mess up after. :hihi:

Hip Hip Hip Hooray
But even with a hat, I bet
That stuff will blow away!"

Q. Where do I put the blue box to be collected?
A. The box should be placed on the kerbside next to your blue bin no later than 7.00am on collection day. Please ensure that the hat is securely in place on the box to stop your paper and card blowing away.
......
Q. Is the hat fastened to the blue box?
A. The hat will be in a bag and left inside your box. The hat is elasticated and is easy to fit over your box. We recommend that you tie one of the strings to one handle on your box to stop it blowing away after collection.
Q. Does the hat have to be on or off the blue box when presented for collection?
A. The hat should always be on the blue box when put out for collection to prevent your paper and card from blowing away.
Q. My blue box has lost its hat. What should I do?
A. Just contact us on: 0114 273 4567 or email: sheffieldenquiries@veolia.co.uk to order a replacement. There is no charge for this.

Well why say or a net? I believe in the saying, if its not broke don't fix it, why not use a box for the tins and bottles instead as they do in Merseyside and leave the blue bins for the use they were intended.
I can see claims galore from the binmen for bad backs after lifting all these boxes full of paper and card,
I have just read in the Gazette that the contents of the blue bins are going all the way to Wolverhampton for processing! So much for carbon footprints.:loopy:
the problem for me is l dont go outside to the bin everytime l get a tin or some cardboard etc, so now have to have 3 bins in the kitchen as well.
night owl 1 02-03-2010, 03:44 We've just got a blue box for paper and card, our blue bin is for plstic tins and glass, but you can't put yogourt pots, plastic meat trays, bottle lids, plastic bags in so it looks like we'll carry on going to the recycling. Also once a fortnight they are all collected black bin, blue bin and blue box on a Monday, so don't drive round high green cos it will be chocca with bin lorries!!!!!!!!!!
Got ours also yesterday and as stated it has a net instead of a lid, I phoned Veolia and asked why not a plastic lid to keep the contents dry and she said "haven't you got anywhere to keep the box where it will stay dry" even if I had the box will be put at the kerb the night before collection and a decent downpour will soak the paper and then they may not empty it because it is too heavy.
Oh and when I mentioned the poor guys who will have to lift several hundred of these boxes every day I was told that "they will be given a training course on how to lift them", honestly you couldn't make it up.:loopy:
barmyowls 04-03-2010, 14:08 Got our blue box today - who thought of this crazy idea !!
I shred some of our letters we get etc so that be good when its windy lol , and as for papers the blue bin was always full !!

The blue box does not have a lid, it has netting which you put over the top.
Blue bins for glass and plastic bottles, but not plastic packaging.

I think the next logical step is for them to start charging to empty the black bin by weight, in order to encourage us to use the recycling boxes and bins as much as possible. This is what is done in some other countries.

What happens if the glass breaks when you put it in? It is quite drop from the top to the bottom of an empty blue bin. Will it be safe for the binmen if there is a lot of broken glass in the blue bins? When we put our first lot of glass out this week, I got my husband to gently lower it all in as he has longer arms, but I don't think we will always be able to do that.

I would imagine they would have to be thrown in pretty hard to break, all pubs use bottle bins, binmen only wheel the bin to the back of thier truck.

I don't know, I deal in antique glass and my husband seems to be able to break it without even touching it sometimes!
When I have had to get rid of broken glass in the past I have always wrapped it up in newspaper so it wouldn't hurt the bin men, but I suppose they will know what they are doing.
I also wondered why they want plastics and glass together - surely this just means another job for someone to sort them back apart again? That job won't be very pleasant either if there is broken glass.
Sheff2006 04-03-2010, 20:16 I actually like the idea of the revised recycling scheme starting around Sheffield although the current scheme isnt bad really. Far better than just piling everything in the black bin.
Sh2006.
It kind of defeats the object though when the trucks make 2 journeys a day to Wolverhampton to off load the contents.

I would think they will sort it mechanically.
Crush the waste and either riddle it or put it into water.
I imagine that they want them in the same bin for ease of collection and to try to encourage use of the bins without creating resentment or confusion.
kebab69man 04-03-2010, 23:36 where am i to keep this box. No room in the house, it has not lid on it. Hmmmm lets stick the paper in it outside to get wet, or should i by yet more environmentally unfriendly bags to put them in?
By the way, the council has no facility for pulping and recycling paper. To transport it to the nearest facility would be uneconomical.
However, it does get burned in the council incinerators to keep the tenants warm.
We live in Sheffield and we live in a block of 6 flats. I have one problem with our rubbish? We have a communal rubbish chute for little bits that go into one big bin, then if we want to put our big rubbish sacks out of the bin we have to have a key to a shed where we can throw it in the big bin. I have a big problem with this?
1 - We recycle glass and plastic and we have no other bins for glass or plastic so we just walk out to a bin and put our stuff in. We have to collect it in a big sack and the glass as well and put it in our box room which is full of stuff.
2 - If we had separate bins or even some of these blue boxes I would be so much happier so would other people in block as some of us make the
effort to recycle our glass and plastic.
We have to go to Morrisons at Halfway to put our plastic and glass in the recycle bins. We only go there because my parnters mum and dad take us there on a saturday morning to go shopping. We dont have a car so its not a viable option for us to walk to Morrisons to recycle our stuff.
I am thinkng of writing a letter to Sheffield City Council and tell them of our plight about not having bins to recycle our stuff in. There are houses were we live as we live in a cul-de-sac and they have all the bins for recycling stuff so why dont we. It would make my life much easier and I would feel like I am doing my part for the enviornment.
All those different coloured boxes n bins.Bet it's a bit of a bugger,if ya colour blind.

We're on a water meter and have been washing out our tins for years for recycling. All you have to do is rinse them in your washing up water when you've finished washing up. Not too hard and unlikely to raise your water bills any.
joanne5600 07-03-2010, 22:42 we have a dishwasher so it would mean rinsing out especially - all extra cost to us (thats why we had a meter)
we have a dishwasher so it would mean rinsing out especially - all extra cost to us (thats why we had a meter)
Rinse them in your bathwater then. Or in a puddle outside. Or when you flush the toilet.*
* All of these ideas are stupid ones. Nearly as stupid as your objection to rinsing tins out and recycling them... but not quite.
joanne5600 07-03-2010, 22:50 dont mind recycling but why should it cost us !!! the idea of a meter is to save money

How much do you think it will cost you to rinse out a tin?
Will this be less than the increase in price of tinned goods if they are all put in tins made fresh from metal ores?
Do some homework and get back to me. All the information that you need is freely available. :)
We haven't got ours yet but I've read the instructions with the box my Ma in law has got. It's the most ludicrous system the council (or rather Veolia ) have come up with yet. The blue box is for paper and card. It will be collected every 2 weeks, but is less than a third the size of the blue bins. However, you can bundle up the excess and place it next to the blue box for collection. And although the box is for paper and cardboard, please don't cut up carboard boxes so's they'll fit in the box. Flatten them and tie them in a bundle and leave them next to the blue box.
The blue bin should then be used for glass, cans, and plastic bottles. NOTE, only plastic bottles, not plastic tubs, yog.pots etc. These you have to take to the recycling centres. So while you're at it you might as well take the rest as well. And when you get there, you'll find blue Veolia skips into which you can put plastic bottles, plastic tubs etc, and cans, all together. Having spent the last few years carefully separating our waste and taking it to the centre, I'm now inclined to chuck the lot in the black bin and tell them where to stick their blue box and bin, (with the lid closed of course)
It does not say anything about washing tins out, we have had our box a few weeks now, no problems so far, and all seems a good idea...

Drink more Gin and Tonic, eat less yoghurt. Problem solved :D
That is a seriously bonkers set of restrictions. Time to complain to Veolia, I think.
Or, just put the tubs and yoghurt pots in the blue bin anyway. They will never find out. If enough people do that, pehaps they will figure out a way of dealing with it.
i live in barnsley and have normal grey bin for houshold rubbish, blue wheelie bin for paper , a brown one for glass and tins and a green one for garden rubbish and cardboard plus my 2 compost bins recycle all you can if put a landfill site near to where you lived who would be the first to protest/ complain

Although I remember seeing on tv that washing the cans out is not very green because you are wasting water to do so.

Not if you use the waste water from washing up or washing your hands :)
Is there anyway you can request they take back the bins? I have never once put out the blue bin and green bin...i don't make a lot of rubbish and my back garden is tiny, don't want it to have 3 unslightly bins in, 1 will do.
We are two pensioners over the age of 70, we live in a ground floor flat and pay council tax like everyone else. Where is our BLUE BOX? We can't have one! Veolia have told us that any one in a flat or maisonette cannot have a blue box, not until at least the end of the year! What are we to do with our paper ........take it to the nearest dumpit site! Well with no transport, to do so, if you see all us pensioners catching the bus with shopping bags full of paper, you will know where we are off to! ...........RIDICULOUS ...!
