Hi the names Charlotte or Lottie

I found out I was pregnant last Friday and went to the doctors on Monday. All that happened was that I had to fill in a form and that was it. Oh yeah and do another test. (ive done 6 now and its still hard to believe)

The form I filled in was refferring me to Jessops Wing and the doctor said I should wait until im 15-16 weeks pregnant and then the midwife will phone me up.

Now when my cousin was pregnant back in Lancashire she had antenatal at 8 weeks and first scan at 12. Is the care not very good here in Sheffield at Jessops Wing???

Im 5 week pregnant by the way.

Thanks

that seems a bit daft, i'm sure you're generally 'booked in' by the midwife at about 8 weeks, with my youngest i didnt know how far i was so i was booked in quickly and sent for a dating scan immedietly. you also should have a 12 week scan and bloods done as thats the only time they can be, when i went for my dating scan i was 11 weeks and i had to return a week later! As its your first I would have expected you to be seen earlier as you will undoubtly be anxious and they like to come and tell you all the things you can and cant do, eat ect.....

Hi lotti, I too had a scan and blood tests at 12 wks.I f I were you I would phone the Jessop wing and ask when you should be seen. You may need to play a little dumb about the things the doc told you and see if the hospital give you a sooner appointment. Tests for downs etc need to be done at a certain point in the pregnancy. Hope it helps. Nicola

Definitely ring the jessop. There's certain blood tests that have to be done at 15-16 weeks, and if that's when the doctor says the midwife will first contact you, then either he/she doesn't know what they're talking about, or know exactly what they're talking about because they know how thinly stretched their midwives are.

What you want to achieve by playing dumb - a scan at 10-12 weeks (the dating scan - they'll give you a due date based on how big the embryo is), some blood tests at the same time, followed by more at 15-16 weeks, a further scan at around 20 weeks (when they may be able to tell you the sex of the baby). When you first go in, make sure you book yourself some antenatal classes (if you want them - the 4 week course (1 evening per week) from the jessop was more than adequate for my needs, although some people also take a second set of classes)). The classes get booked up really early and there aren't that many...you need to start them at around 30 weeks (although it doens't matter a great deal if you don't, but it's nice to have them out of the way).

Congratulations, by the way!

I'm 11 weeks lottie and I found out at 5 weeks, I was booked into see my midwife at 8 weeks and have my dating scan next week at 12 weeks then one more at 20 weeks.

I'd insist on being seen before 15/16 weeks. This is my second (dd is nearly 10) and she was born in scotland so it's all new down her for me to. I was nervous and worried and I don't think I could've waited until 15/16 weeks!

Phone either your Dr's and ask to speak to a midwife or ring the Jessop.

Good luck and keep us posted oh and Congrats!!!

Congratulations, Lottie!

I think you've probably got the general message here...things are very tight. If you want the care, you'll have to be pushy, know what you should be having and when, and make sure you get it. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. Best of luck with it all, and remember this is a great place to come with your questions and concerns - between them, these parents know more than the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, lol.

Can you book in directly with your Midwife at the Doctor's surgery? I think I had to leave my details at reception for them to get the Midwife to remember. But I really can't remember much about it and it was less than 2 years ago, I should be able to remember!! Basically a lot of the time, you have to book the appointments, which is hard as it can be quite confusing.

Congratulations.

Forgot to say. They don't offer you any other tests as the bought ones are supposed to be very accurate. I kinda wished they did though, as I didn't believe it either and it would have been nice to have it confirmed much sooner than the scan at 12 weeks.

Well, i am only young (16) but when I found out, I went to GP, as I didn't know wether or not to keep my bub straight away, he asked me to come back in a week with a final answer and would go on from there. I chose to keep my bub, went back and he printed off some sheets of paper and told me what to do. I had to ring up NHS choose and book, and get an appointment at jessops. I got my first appointment only to be sent a letter telling me I wasn't allowed that appointment cause of teenage something or other. So I had to ring back and get another. I had a scan and was told I was 10 weeks 3 days. They gave me my due date there and then and got told to go to reception to book the rest of my appointments. I also had a 3 hour chat with a specialist. Who asked me the questions about teenage prostitution/paedophile rings etc. Also had a blood test then for sexual diseases etc (Not sure if this is the case for older people or just teens) But then I saw a midwife at GP 3 weeks later who asked me which midwife I would like. I chose Di Mitchell..Don't know why name looked appealing? lol. She came and visited me a few weeks later and gave me tons of leaflets, books etc. Then the health visitor came round about 15-16weeks and had my downs/spina bifda blood test. I got my results back within week and half, and I wasn't high risk. I had my 20 weeks scan and everything is fine etc. Midwife coming round to my home in october for 24 week check up. And everything has been explained to me, without the jibbery medical words and with normal understanding words! I hope everything goes well for you. I don't know if my process is the same, because im under teenage obs not the adult bit..but at my scans it wasn't just teens, there was other woman there too who were deffinatly not teens! So I think your proceedure should be about the same. If you ring up jessops im sure they'll help you! :D Good luck. x

My first midwife visit..ARGH she left everything I was in a right muddle all day. She'll give you an emma's diary book which has a leaflet inside, sign up and you get these freebies! :) Also at my first scan I got the bounty leaflet and signed up..that gives you more leaflets plus little freebies.

If you have a boots card, tesco, and other store advantage cards, go to their websites or stores and most have a mother&baby thing to sign up too. Boots give you a free bag and tesco give you a free basket with little bits in. Not exactly VERY good but their cool :) And useful.
