View Full Version : Sheffield's nightclubs - do you remember...?
Can anyone remember the Cavendish Nightclub ?
It opened in May 1967.
I was only sixteen at the time so it had changed to Baileys
Nightclub before I got in the place in the early 70's.
By then the Fiesta Nightclub was pulling in the big names.
Can anyone recall the artists who appeared at The Cavendish
in it's early days ?
I think Dusty Springfield was the first artist to appear there.
Hi
Anyone remember Tiffany's and the Fiesta - I saw Tony Christie there:D
Where was Tiffany's ?
Lost count of the number of times I went to the Fiesta.
Always seemed to get free tickets - but always for
days early in the week so getting up for work was rough.
From memory - best acts I saw at Fiesta -
Four Tops
Tommy Cooper
Roy Orbison
Gene Pitney
Edwin Starr
Sam & Dave
Stevie Wonder - brilliant !
Can anyone remember what the resident band were
called ?
Talking of Tony Christie - back in the 70's I was on a bus in
a remote area of Yugoslavia and Tony came on the bus radio
on a local station singing "Amarillo" and the whole bus started
singing along to it - unreal !!
Nutronic 28-08-2003, 08:46 I was born in 1982 so I have not been to any descent clubs in Sheffield yet, I have had to put up with the likes of Berlins and Kingdom where it seems to be attracting alot of UNDERAGE girls there known to me as 'Jail Bait'
Janet Olsen 28-08-2003, 10:33 I Used to go to the Cavendish in the 60's, I can remember seeing Herman & the Hermits & also Dave Allen. Could probably remember a lot more had I been sober enough at the time. Les Dawson (comedian) was another ne come to think of it.
It used to be quite a good club infact you used to have to queue to get in when it first opened.
PaulTansley 28-08-2003, 14:48 Tiffanys was the white building on London Road.
I remember the Fiesta very well and all the top acts appeared there.
I once had a ticket to see Dion Warwick and she did not show up.
All the crowd were bemused but to save dissapointment they brought in an emergency act to take her place no other than Barnsleys own Charlie Williams.
I suppose it wa still a big disapointment people wwanting to see a world renound diva and finished up with a local comedian but a good night was has by all.
I went to see Marti Caine at the Fiesta.
I also got drunk for the first time at the Fiesta... White wine.
Tiffany's I definitely remember. Full of 10 bob millionaires with gold medallions. I have this vivid memory of me and a friend drinking Pony (the drink with a kick) and dancing to "Wooly Booly" dressed in high heels and tight pencil skirts.
Janet Olsen 02-09-2003, 10:14 I tried doing the woolley bully a couple of years ago after a night on the grog & an equally old mate tried as well, we did OK until next morning when I couldnt straighten my back up & he couldnt walk his knee was so swollen. I find it difficult to believe that we used to spend all night dancing like that.God give me my youth back.
So you spent all night dancing like that back then!! LOL
They call it line dancing these days.
I do the Electric Slide now and again.
If God's dishing out youth, then let me know okay.
Someone asked about the resident band at the Fiesta?
It was the Terry Clayton Band for most of the Fiesta's existence, although initially the band was lead by someone else (can't remember that far back!).
Terry on drums, Roger (trumpet), Ken? (sax) - plus various others at different times.
There was also a brief period when the Andy Wardough (sp?) band were resident, along with loadsa dancers.
Ah, happy days!!
MARTINO 1 18-09-2003, 19:13 Any one remember crazy daisy on high street a mate of mine got glassed in there it sure was crazy.
Does anyone remember going to the night club at the Wednesday ground in the 70s.
Met my husband in there who is one of the keenest Blades fans you'll ever meet. He still says Wednesday have a lot to answer for!

Tiffany's was that weird looking white place at the bottom of the London Road. Was previously called the Locarno. Think it began life as the Lansdowne picture house. Last I heard it was still a nightclub called Club Generation - oh yeah, and they've painted it black now!!

Used to go to a club at Hillsborough in the 70's. It was called 'Ozzy Night Owl'. Is this the same place?

When I was of an age to go underage clubbing (mid 80s), 'Tiffanys' was called Vicars (not forgetting the upstairs bit which was called The Treetops Suite where, if you danced too vigorously, the record jumped and the DJ bellowed "Don't knock the console!").
These days of course, it's quite a prestigious club owned by the Gatecrasher people, and it's called Bed.
In between times it's been variously called Le Palais (when it was a stalwart of Sheffield's early nineties rave scene), The Music Factory (when it became the first mid-nineties Sheffield club to really compete with the serious clubbing giants of Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool - its flagship night was the glam house Love To Be...), and Club Generation (about which I have no knowledge whatsoever).

Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea exactly when it changed it's name from the Locarno to Tiffanys. My era was the 70's and I always thought it was called Tiffanys then. Don't particularly remember it as the Locarno, but I could be wrong. Long time ago, and many dead brain cells now!!
It was Locarno in the early to mid eighties for sure - I remember being in it when I was about 16.
In the late 60's used to go down to the then LOCARNO
on Sunday nights.
Remember the DJ was called "Mighty Atom" and I think
the guy was only small 4 - 5 ft.
Never got too close to the decks.
Anyone else remember him ?
In the eighties the Mighty Atom was DJ at Josephines who sponsored the basket ball team I played for.
Anyway, I used to dread pre season when I would be asked to pose for the Star photographer with this little guy as he presented me with the sponsorship cheque. I am 6 feet 6 inches tall.
Cannot remember his name but he drove a white E-type with wooden riser blocks on the pedals.
goldenfleece 10-11-2003, 17:02 Ah the old days when each club tended to have its own resident DJ who worked all the nights.....none of this superstar DJ crap we have now, just regular people wearing snazzy suits spinning the old vinyl and shouting down the mike at you! Ah, the good old days......
I worked at Tiffany's for a while as the "resident" DJ back in 1978, possibly Sheffields youngest DJ at the time.
I remember the Cavendish or Baileys. I was only 15 in 1967 but did manage to get in there not long after that. Had my engagement party in there in 1971. Not a night to forget because I was wearing a white one piece suit and managed throw lager and black down my front.
Can't remember any of the acts that were on, all a blur now.
Also remember the Top Rank (I think it was anyway) where we used to stand up on the balcony and pick out the lads we fancied.
Happy days
my mum -jean. worked at tiffany's in the 70s.
I remember going to the mojo when i was underage. Just remember it being black walls covered in psychedelia, absolutely packed and lots of really sweaty bodies!! Would go round to my mates who was 2yrs older than me, turn my skirt over at the waistband and she would put black stuff on my eyes and white stuff on my lips and off we would go.
I did my 16 to 20 year old bit from 80-84. I hate night clubs and preferred The Wap and The Penguin to be honest but when forced out with my New Romantic/Mod/Disco mates it'd invariably be Romeo & Juliets or Steeleys.. the only short we could stomach at the time was Pernod and Black and we'd end up looking like Jack Nicholson as the Joker with our blackcurrant tashes LOL
I wonder why we never got birds?
I just remember R&Js with the thumping 'Sheffield Sound' of Human League or whatever and everyone in burgundy leather box jackets and thin ties.. Midge Ure moustaches.. BIG hair LOL

i used to live very near teh hillsboro ground, near the fivearches bridge.
I was/ am a blade, and am almost embarassed to admit to clubbing at hillsboro' in the early eighties.
it was called "Christies" then, and the reason I liked it, was because it was only a short, drunken stagger, home, after a skinful (chuckles!)
I Also rememebr the locarno/ tiffany's/ vicars/ bed, from the 70's.
It started out as a cinema: the Locarno/ lansdowne Picture palace. ( it was known by both names, I cannot remember which came first)
then it was a dance hall, IIRC,
the nightclub incarnation was as follows:-
the locarno dance hall
tiffanys night club (and treetops, upstairs, as someone also mentioned earlier)
vicars
locarno
then it discovered that ugly black paint, and the indie scene and was reincarnated as "BED".
Mr PT talks about his misspent youth in the 70's, and recalls the nightclub that was/is varously known as:-
cavendish/baileys/ romeoand juliets/ cairojax and silks/ jobcentre.
he recalls seeing various bands/ artistes there. He particularly remembers seeing Roy Orbison, and the band Mungo Jerry both appearing within about a couple of weeks of each other.
He says that Orbison was absolutely rubbish, he came on, late, performed in a mediocre fashion, did about four songs, and then left the stage, refusing to do any encores, or sign any autographs. He left many, including Mr PT extremely disillusioned, and disappointed.
Shortly afer this appearance by "The Big O", Mungo Jerry, the band appeared there.
they were totally different in their attitude. they went on stage, played their hearts out, gave a wonderful performance, signed as many autographs as were asked for, and even sat with the audience members and had a pint, both during the interval, and after their "gig" had finished!
PT
rocklobster 22-06-2004, 18:38 I joined the cavendish in 1967, after the Locarno closed for refurbishment ,to re-open as Tiffany's,It had a casino and the Latino Lounge which hosted up and coming acts, then there was the go-go room ( a small disco) happy days. I saw the Love Affair,LesDawson,Marmalade, and does anyone remember Tiny Tim?
mikosavi 22-06-2004, 19:50 no-one has mentioned heart beat at the top of the skates on queens road, or new faces in town.
Plain Talker 23-06-2004, 00:17 Where was New Faces? I can't remember that one,
I can remember Genevieves, in Charter Square, and Mona Lisas, which was next door
there was that nightclub, next door to what is now Berlins (formerly the Hoffenbrau Bier Keller/ "Dingwalls' Rythm and Booze") which is now called the Club Uropa, I forget its name, back when.... can anyone enighten me?
the Limit, the "Crazy Daizy", Sinatra's.....
and as for the "Poxy Roxy" (shudders!) ugh, what a hole that was, especially on a thursday, which was "Grab a Granny Night" sorry, I meant "over 25's night"...
I was not keen on "dollars", and I detested Josephines, in Barkers pool (for reasons of my own)
I used to "do" nights out at Christies, (at hillsborough football ground), and the Executive suite, at Sheffield United's ground.
I remember the nightclub above the Silver-Blades Ice Rink, but I remember it as "Stars" (I cannot remember what it is called now..)
I also remember the "14-18 yr old's" nights, on a monday night, (IIRC) at Tiffany's, as it was known then, and the gang of we schoolfriends all walking back home along London Road/ Abbeydale Road late at night, barefoot, wondering whether we'd manage to get up for school the next morning!
Ahh, memories!!

P T, that was called the Penny Farthing later to be changed to Scamps, we used to drink there after filling up in the Hofbrau......funny but it always seemed to be full of the local footballers at that time, even on a friday night prematch but it never seemed to affect em on a Saturday, or perhaps they would have been even better without 8 pints swilling round inside of em.

There was a club called FACES on CHarles street, which became a restaurant in the 80's with the UNDERGROUND bar downstairs, then changed to YORKS, and now CHARLES STREET club.

my auntie was a dancer there apparently she used to be in a cage hanging from the ceiling wearing next to nothing.
Club Uropa used to be called Isabella's back in the mid nineties. Anyone remember Kiki's next to where Matrix bar is now? It was open around the same time as Isabella's next to wher the Matrix bar is now? I also used to go in Capitol nightclub on Eyre street before it became club zero and later a live venue.

steelblade 26-08-2004, 09:09 I can remember Kiki's, it was a great night. Although I have no idea how I used to dance to hardcore but I loved it. I couldn't stand to listen to it now though.
Capitol was a great night aswell. Used to go there then onto Niche and then onto Tin Pan Alley all day sunday.
Happy days. Hard to believe it was 8-9 years ago.
I used to be a member of the Cavendish Club and thought it was the bees knees at the time.
The best night I had there was going to see Georgie Fame.
We also had a good meal in the restaurant there.
In later years I went to the Ozzie Owl Club as it was more local for me.
I remember celebrating my Father in Law's birthday there one night.
He was a regular and well known for his drinking, the only beer driven man in Sheffield was his claim to fame.
They asked for anyone to compete in supping a yard of ale and he volunteered.
As a 'treat' the bar staff filled the glass vessel with one of each drink including spirits from the optics from behind the bar until it was full.
He drank the whole lot and won a prize as well as a heavy hangover.
Thinking about it, he could have died.

I think Dusty Springfield was the first artist to appear there. If my memory is correct I think., Max Bygraves was the first caberet artist to appear at this Nightclub..and I remember he didn't go down as well as he should have, I believe there was a quote from him in the Star or Telegraph..He said "Sheffield was not yet ready for Nightclubs"..can someone check the archives at the Library to see if this was true?.
oldgreen 31-08-2004, 14:51 In between times it's been variously called Le Palais (when it was a stalwart of Sheffield's early nineties rave scene),
O dear, that quote makes me feel old !
Yup it was locarno when Anwar and a few others of us approached club to do some nights there.. we went on to change it to the palais and hosted nights Compulsion Wednesday and Jam factory on Saturdays with Dave Seaman, Ralphy, solid state and Anwar and Green (me). Big nights there with Sasha etc, all happend from 1990 to 1992 then came to a bit of a sudden close when a certain group were denied entrance to the club, took Umbrage to this, and vented their frustration with tear gas and shotguns...
Anwar went on to build the republic.....the rest of us crawled back under a rock !
scottcross 01-09-2004, 14:33 The nightclub above the skating rink was Samanthas before Stars.
It used to hold the Northern Soul all-nighters in the 70's. All drinks 10p on a Monday night.
The Crazy Daisy was excellent more like a late bar than a night club as I don't remember there being a dress code and it was really casual, used to have different music on different nights something for all tastes. Apart from the beer which was watneys red barrel.
I remember that also was a bier keller in a previous life.
Bring them back what a fun night out drinking steins of bier and dancing on tables to an oompah band make a change from the stuff on offer now.
Yes ChrisM
I went to Locarno in the 60s, City Hall also, places were always packed, us girls would dance together around the outside of the dance floor to see who was there.
They were realy stricked on underage drinking back then, my sister and i once got caught, you would have thought we had committed a murder, they (cops) went to see my mother at work the next day, she had to go to the P Dept, we didn't do dancing for a long time after that.
Barley Wine was the big drink back then for us girls, cheap and strong, tasted awful.

and josephines.
romeo and juliets. used to like daisy.
I remember the Daisy, Kikis, Isabellas, Romeos, The Limit, Josephines, Samanthas etc. All good fun. I don't remember much violence either, aside from the occasional set-to. There didn't seem to be the kind of regular twenty on to one scenarios we see today. I enjoyed all the clubs, but I used to think of Josephine's [often regarded as the, ahem, sophisticated one]as a bit of a "downer", as it seemed to have a large, rather desperate looking percentage of recently-divorced types. I didn't like the huge bouncer either; he and I once got into an argument. He told me that he had a black belt, and laughing, asked me what I had. "Twenty mates", I replied.
I can't be the oldest rocker here, can I? How about Rebels? And Monday night Roxys? Around '89-'93. Oops, now you know how old I am!

Actually the UNDERGROUND bar opened in late 1983 and closed around 1986. The days of Jam and Secret Affair and the 'mod' scene revival were really 78-80/81.
Great bar, very very popular at weekends, most of the rock crowd went there in a drinking triangle with the Wapentake and YOrkshireman Arms 'rock bars'. Ah, good times. The Underground was also apparently the first pub in Sheffield to have a video juke box which arrived in 1984 and was quite revolutionary.
This may be out of date - but I spent my drunken 21st under the waving palms at Tiffanys in 1969 (and despite my age & drunkenness, I remember it!). I'm pretty sure it got that name the year before, in '68.
I found the site when searching for the Fiesta and Four Tops, who did a fantastic performance at the Fiesta in 197?, just a one or two night thing when the Stylistics were the bill-toppers for the week. I saw them again here in the US at the NC State Fair last night and was wondering how long since I last saw them. Any memories of when the Sheffield show was?

It was pennys when i first started clubbin in the early 80's, and I seem to think that Martin Fry (ABC) used to be seen in there.
Romeo's was my other regular haunt at that time, with the occasional sojourn to josephines, the limit, stars (usually for somebodys birthday party, in fact I had my 18th party there), and later the leadmill
WallBuilder 27-10-2004, 22:28 I seem to remember Josephine's was a rather upmarket place with in it's early days a very strict dress code, guys could be turned away for not having highly polished shoes. That was in the days when one of their bouncers was a large lad who was dumb, he later went on to become a professional wrestler in the days of Big Daddy and Mick McManus.
As the years passed the dress code lapsed till they'd let in yokels in those dreadful hawaian floral short sleeved shirts.... YUK and YUK again.

Wallbuilder, that bouncer was my family-friend Alan Kilby, who is indeed profoundly deaf, but in no way shape or form could he be described as Dumb.
I'd like to gently point out that:-
He may not have full use of his speech, but "Dumb" (or "deaf-and-dumb") is an unnaceptable description, as it has connotations of being "thick" or "stupid" and believe me, he, like many people with hearing impairments, is not "thick", nor is he "stupid".
He has similar levels of speech to other people who have comparative levels of hearing impairment.
Describing him as "dumb" is in a similarly unnaceptable vein to describing me as a "crip", when I am actually a "Wheelchair-user". He is "deaf", or , alternatively, the other acceptable description is "hearing-impaired".
I was schoolmates with his son, Adam, and his daughter, Tracey, who are also deaf.
Alan and Adam Kilby formed a Father-And-Son wrestling team, and had moderate success.

espadrille 28-10-2004, 05:16 Has no one mentioned Scamps?
It was my favourite nightclub, where I danced away on a Friday evening.
It was a magical atmosphere, and yes there was not much trouble in those days.
people sometimes got a bit angry if you danced with someones boyfriend( unknowingly ) and maybe there were drugs if you wanted to seek them out, but compared to the binge drinking, drunken behavior that people have descended in to these days, those really were the days.
The music was inspirational and the people were the same each week.Friends and relationships were made and probably still some of them are together today.
I met my husband at Romeos and Juliets but Scamps was my favourite nightclub.

Not so!!
The Hermitage, bottom of Moor/London Road, had a video/tape juke box in 1968.
VERY revolutionary then.
WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 10:54 Hi PlainTalker,
First of all my apoligies to any physically challenged person out there though as I am one myself I don't find it in the least offensive if someone isn't aware of the correct terminology to describe my disability.
I used the word 'dumb' to describe someone who can't talk, maybe because as I grew up deaf and dumb were acceptable. It is unfortunate that thick morons can be described as dumb but Alan certainly wasn't thick or a moron. In my defense though I never heard him utter a syllable which added to his presense and I'm sure in the ring as a wrestler he was equally silent.
Have you ever noticed that when someone meets a wheel chair user they tend to direct their comments to the person pushing the chair, now that's annoying.
Penny Farthing, best club in town. Had so many nights there, mixing with footballers, goodness knows how they managed to play the next day. A typical night out was to start at the top of the town, cant remember the name of the pub, we used to get off the bus at Walshes and go Fitzalan Square direction, then zig zag our way down town, Nelson, Buccanner, Wap, Hermitage and then end up at the Penny Farthing. Hermitage with its revolutionary video jukebox, my one memory was The Captain of Your Ship, it used to be played over and over again as there were girls with very few clothes on, if ever I hear that song it takes me straight back to being 17 again, in the Hermitage, absolutely heaving with people having a good time. Such memories!!
I used to work at the Fiesta in 1971
loved every minute of it
anyone else thare at the same time

Well for some time I have had a website for remembering rebels and also one for the limit, people have sent in their memories, and I have added them. But this year I have been working with a few people to develop rock reunited, where we have links to websites with pictures of rebels/limit/buccaneer/kgb/roxy rock night. www.rockreunited.co.uk
bevdragon 20-11-2004, 20:33 My mum used to work as a barmaid at Bailey's. I used to go there when it was Romeo and Juliets. Also went to Roxy's and the same building when it was the Fiesta (saw Bobby Crush there!). I remember going to Josephine's, Tiffany's, The Limit, Turn Ups, Crazy Daisy, Raffles Bar, and the one behind the Moor but can't remember the name of that one (near Telephone House)
We used to come down to the Limit from Filey in the '80's when Human League, Heaven 17 were at the peak of their fame. We got some odd looks up here on the East Coast when seen in our gear, but fitted in pretty well in Sheffield!
:hihi:
After a night at the Limit, we'd sleep in a shelter in Weston Park, or at the Midland Station.
Great days.

There were two nightclubs, years ago, by telephone house
one was Genevieve's, on the front, the other one was Mona lisa's (IIRC) which was around the back of Genevieve's.

Wow, yes, it was near the bottom end of Nether Edge Road - there are flats there now I think. If memory serves me correctly, it was a very basic looking building - it looked like one of those temporary mobile classrooms you used to sometimes have outside schools! I used to walk past it when I was a kid and used to be really intrigued as to what went on there. What a weird place to have a nightclub!

I worked at the Penthouse 1970/1971 on the cloakroom in those days we hung the coats up,
Mad_Mick 10-12-2004, 23:21 I was a kid of the late 60's early seventies. My favourite place was Haerbeats above the skating ring, It was handy from Park Hill, just down the hill. Had some super times there and listened to some gr8 music. We watched the 1970 world cup in colour there, and then danced the night away listening to some gr8 soul sounds. I went through a phase of taking photos their using special film that didn't need a flash. Got some gr8 pics but they have been lost I think. At that time it was an Art College Idea, and I was at Sheffield College of Art, although I was a skinhead. :)

I've got some fairly distinct memories of the Penthouse and it is true there was a very relaxed attitude as to what was going on in some of the darker corners, the long couch like seats certainly meant lying down after lots of ale was quite nice.

I can't believe no mention of Shades, fantastic soul music club of the 70's, but you had to watch your wallet. Then progressed on to Crazy Daisy then limit where we saw many up and comming groups. remember Pennys where I think I saw ABC perform their first gig, it was all down hill after that.

Iv'e been to it when it was the locarno - saw a metal band (the members were only something like 10 years old)
La palais (i went every tuesdays night for the student night (ozric tentacles, nine inch nails, levellers etc etc) i was there that often the manager joked that he was going to put me my own beer tap in :) aswell as a few times on the rave nights ) and i also went to the music factory a few times when it was hardcore rave.

I used to go in the Wap in the late 70s, went the first time when I was 15 and used to drink vodka and lime. Having been in loads of times in the evening, my friend and I once decided to go in on a Saturday lunch, aged 17. We ordered two chip butties and a coke each. Halfway down the chip butty someone told us to drink up and leave because we were underage. We thought this was hilarious because we had been going in for two years and drinking vodka, and the one time we ordered a coke we were asked to leave! We obviously had more make up etc on in an evening. We tried to argue that even if we were underage it was quite legal to go in and drink coke, but it didnt work!
Happy days ... :hihi:
Yellowrose 12-10-2005, 21:45 I also remember the Genevieve in Charter Square. I had my hen night there in 1978 and was accompanied by some colleagues from the Royal Hospital, West St, where we worked. My partner's stag do had ended up at The Limit and this wasnt to the taste of the best man, who joined the hen party with a friend. They drank most of my bottle of champagne that I got for going on stage as a bride to be. Fortunately, I wasnt dressed up, just p*ssed up.

mumoftrips 20-10-2005, 22:43 I used to drink regularly in Turn Ups on commercial street. Monday nights was 50p for anything other than mixers. It was always a really good night out. Can remember drinking in Bloomers first next door, which was all part of the same place, and when the pub closed they opened it into the nightclub to provide more seating space for the night club users. Met a few great folk in turn ups and had a fantastic time.

Crazy Daisy was later Legends. It was underground, the entrance was in the front of the telegraph and star building.
Jimi Hendrix and Led Zep played there, I have been told.
Legends / Crazy Daisy
High Street
[ Dissapeared Early 1990's ]
Apparently a great gig venue in the sixties, Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker were reputed to have played here. A basement bar, where you entered from a doorway in the front of the Telegraph and Star building. As legends, it was open into the 90's for lunchtime drinking and meals. The doorway has been altered now and appears to be a lobby for the offices above.
Crazy Dazy is famous for being the bar where Phil Oakey from The Human League discovered the two girl singers and propelled them from the school sixth form to poptastic stardom... " I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar . . . "
Happy days..or nights, spent at Samantha's in the 70's. I fell in love with my hubby and Northern Soul way back then. I think we started going there because it was easy to get in under age but then the lure of the music got us even when we turned 18. I remember coming out as the allnighter people were queuing to get in and being dead envious cos my mom wouldn't let me go.
Our 'grown-up' nights were spent at the Fiesta, me in my long skirt (maxi's) and platforms and him in his 3 piece suit and platforms :D After we were married, '79 I think, we saw The Jacksons there. I was a huge Michael fan then and have seen him in concert several times but in the Fiesta I was soooo close and remember being so excited. He was very handsome back then. Another favourite was Edwin Starr, brilliant night.
Great memories :)

malagablade 31-10-2005, 09:01 club in the corner was broadway, which later became a shoe shop.it was actually called a bistroteque(spelling?).no alcohol available and i believe was possibly owned by stringfellow. dj i think was pat sweetwater who also was dj at the charade at the stag roundabout in rotherham(later @josies).both sort of skinhead hangouts.also the "merry england "under the black swan.all great places for soul music as was the heartbeat which became samanthas above the skates on queens road.utb

Blimey... forgot all about Merry England at the "Mucky Duck". Know Stringfellow owned MoJo but didn't realise he possibly owned Broadway as well. Was it The Buccaneer under The Grand Hotel on Leopold Street. Changed to Pig & Whistle I think after demolition/rebuild of that complex.

I remember Alan Kilby from the 60's. Unless of corse you crossed him ha ha I also remember seeing him on tv wrestling against chaps like Mick Mcmanus. Is he still around?
Remember The Nelson in the late 60's. I was a barman there (Dive Bar). We had the best stocked juke box in town. Roger the manager used to get people to put their own discs on it, as the issue stuff was pretty crap. he had got a key for the machine from somewhere.
I hear some bad things happened for him later on with his wife.
Another good pub was the Raven and that one opposite the city hall(cant remember its name)
Good nights too in the Broadfield and The White Lion (old Martin the landlord complaining how much his electric bill was due to all sound equipment.)

Its been a long time since Iv heard 'erbert terbert'!!! And has been nearly as long since I saw my 'uncle val' as we called him as kids lol. Kept intouch with Dicky Dodd for a good number of years but havent spoken with him in too long so must give him a bell....
It's nice that people remember my dad and speak about him with such fondness, guess he was one of those larger than life characters you either loved or couldnt stand to be around as you found it all too much - either way it makes me feel proud.
Thanks Mick
Nicola
normanmarina 04-10-2006, 09:34 Me and my old mate Jed(must be a few on here know him?)used to go in the penthouse, remember one time in particular two lads came in obviously bike lads, leather jackets cut off denims on top!!it turned out they were members of a Sheffield patch club, one guy was really little(think he was called Greg)anyway they werent looking for bother just having a drink,I think the bouncer took exception to how they were dressed and a few words were exchanged and the bouncer whacked the little guy for nothing apart from he showed no fear!!I remember I was mad as a wasp and I joined in the foray by jumping on the bouncers back and clinging on for grim death!!!I finished up sitting outside on the pavement fat lip/bloody nose etc laughing with these two lads who were older than me,it was 1974/5,I saw the little guy a few times after that riding around on his bike(BSA cafe racer)he always nodded, sure it was him that stirred my love of motorbikes!!!also had a few words with Jed as he never got stuck in!!!little chuff!!:)
richardl21 07-10-2006, 13:22 Terry Clayton was a great hairdresser and played a part in my training in 1963/4 at Shaws Hairdressers on West Street.
He used to cut Keith Barrons hair when he was working at the Sheffield Playhouse Theatre which was just around the corner, he went on to better things!
Terry was already a fairly successful drummer around the Sheffield area but my fondest memory was when he actually succeeded in sending me across the road to the sweet shop to get the long stand!!!! I got it alright Oh Yes !! .
He He He he was a top man, I liked him a lot.
Used to go to a MOD's only club on the junction of Broadfield Rd and London Rd. Entrance was on the corner but I can't remember it's name. fell in love with the most beautiful mod girl there, 'suadeheads' we used to call them then.
Used to go to the Daisy regularly in the late 70's early 80's.Allegedly the birth place of the Human League.Remember some nights the D.J. was a Look North presenter, can't remember his name, which was a bit wierd. When it went down hill moved on to the Limit.
I Worked on the Fiesta when it was built the first show was by invitation only (lord mayor chief of police etc)THE SHADOWS played one night for these people

Crazy Daisy was later Legends. It was underground, the entrance was in the front of the telegraph and star building.
and in between those two it was the geisha bar - packed out for the first Sheffield screening of Michael Jackson's Thriller vid.

The DJ bit "rings a bell". Wasn't he "Kelly's eye"? And I think he used to be a on a local radio station too. Anyway I'll stand being corrected as the old grey matter isn't what it used to be.:help:
As I say can't remember his name do remember that he used to wear sunglasses over his ordinary glasses when D.Jing. Think his name was Mike something.

Hi
Anyone remember Tiffany's and the Fiesta - I saw Tony Christie there:D
I loved the fiesta I used to get free tickets from my mums friend. I saw Rodger de Corsey and Nookey Bear one night. I also saw Marty Caine she was fantastic.
During the 70s a lot of the acts at the Aquarius doubleplayed at a club in Mexboro also Fiesta acts would double with the Fiesta in stocton and Sheffield,.No wonder a lot of turns were worn out by the end of the week. One club was unique in that going in to the club you went by a swimming pool. The OASIS in Kimberworth stunk of chlorine.I heard Lenny Peters ask "whats that stink"?Peters and Lee played there a few times.

seashells 30-01-2007, 09:04 Does anyone remember going to the night club at the Wednesday ground in the 70s.
Met my husband in there who is one of the keenest Blades fans you'll ever meet. He still says Wednesday have a lot to answer for!
Yes I remember the Ozzie Owl club. A friend dragged me there when i was underage and I felt guilty and frightened. What shocked me was the act on the stage - it was two or three girls with no clothes on, painted either gold or silver and dancing under strobe lighting. T rex was 'in' at the time with White Swan
Plain Talker 30-01-2007, 09:20 I used to go in in the early eighties, when it was "Christies", seashells...
ahh, many's the night i was to be found, drunk, walking up Herries Road, with my shoes in my hand, cos I'd danced my feet to blisters! lol lol :hihi:
I too spent many a night in Christies in the early 80s, easy to wander home up foxhill road afterwards.
Can remember a lot of the names, just cant remember which one was which!
What was the one round the corner from The Black Swan, you went downstairs to it.
I remember turn Ups, Sinatras, Roxy, Isabellas, Legends, even better when my friend insisted on calling it Leg Ends

there was baileys (romeo and juliets/ cairo jax and ?-?-?-?, etc) which had two seperate dance rooms,(one up, one down, IIRC) then just up the hill, on high street there was Craizy Daizy (Geishas etc) which was in the cellars under what's now "Blacks outdoor shop"
Used to love the Roxy when I came home on leave from the Navy. What they going to do with it? Is it still a church?
For anyone wanting to know about Alan Kilby, or atleast what he's been upto in his wrestling career lately, your in luck as I am a wrestling fan and if your interested I can tell you that on 30th September last year in Lowestoft, Suffolk he teamed up with his son, Adam Kilby in a tag team match but got defeated by a 65 stone team when Adam got pinned.
Then on 11th October at the Park & Arbourthorne Labour Club near where Alan lives he scored the winning fall this time yet again in a tag team match. Most recently on the 21st January at the Sheffield City Hall, Alan received a lifetime achievement award, and rightfully so i'd say.
Grappler 07-02-2007, 10:36 does anyone remember lurch the big big tall man lovely he was but scarey. they laid a plaque out side when he died.
Yes I remember him, I think his name was Jim Gallons
slimsid2000 07-02-2007, 14:12 I remember:
Roxy's
Cairo Jax
Issabella's (Later Uropa)
Josephines
Kiki's
misterlee 07-02-2007, 16:04 Isabella's was fantastic
Tiffany's was that weird looking white place at the bottom of the London Road. Was previously called the Locarno. Think it began life as the Lansdowne picture house. Last I heard it was still a nightclub called Club Generation - oh yeah, and they've painted it black now!!
My mum worked at the Fiesta for years and got all the tickets for the acts. I remember wanting to go see Gene Pitney with her, i was only about 7 !
One group i do remember going to see a few years on, well the only one i was allowed to see was a group named 'Child'.
Any member remember them ?
slimsid2000 08-02-2007, 14:15 Isabella's was fantastic
Never really rated it much but prefered it more after it became Uropa.
Isabella's was fantastic
I used to go to Isabella's on a Monday night when they had ' Zoo ' night. Anyone else remember 'Zoo'? R & B, soul, etc. Think it was around 1987 ish.
i remember cairos next door was called "silks" used to go in on a sunday night cos it was 99p a drink night, great bargains, then off to pepes after for a late supper, still try to go down town when i visit now last time i went in a club in sheff w as "banus" on a thursdat night and did not rate it at all definately preferred it as josephines and they did have a free curry buffet during the weeks (WEDS) i think in the mid 90's. karaoke on a thursday too and u got a video of ur performance too! not bed 'eh?
Nigel Womersle 10-02-2007, 23:29 Can anyone remember the Cavendish Nightclub ?
It opened in May 1967.
I was only sixteen at the time so it had changed to Baileys
Nightclub before I got in the place in the early 70's.
By then the Fiesta Nightclub was pulling in the big names.
Can anyone recall the artists who appeared at The Cavendish
in it's early days ?
I think Dusty Springfield was the first artist to appear there.
I aw Alan Price there around 1967. Couldn't believe that the dance floor rose to become the stage.
Alan Kilby - I knew Alan through working at nightclubs - Tiffenys and Fiesta Club. It's good to know he's doing well - a really nice bloke. I also knew Terry Clayton - the residential band at the Fiesta Club was originally The Ricky Day Five (absonded from Cavendish) before RIcky left to work on cruise ships. RIcky was also compare and did a fantastic job. I remember going on a float with other Fiesta CLub staff and the Ricky Day FIve were on that. They wrote a song called ' We all live in a City on the Move' and played it as we danced and carried on. It was to the tune of Yellow Submarine. Later on I worked at the Limit.
adamski1 06-03-2007, 14:48 In the eighties the Mighty Atom was DJ at Josephines who sponsored the basket ball team I played for.
Anyway, I used to dread pre season when I would be asked to pose for the Star photographer with this little guy as he presented me with the sponsorship cheque. I am 6 feet 6 inches tall.
Cannot remember his name but he drove a white E-type with wooden riser blocks on the pedals.I THINK THIS MAYBEE THE DJ MY DAD PICKED UP AND HUNG ON THE COAT HANGERS HE WAS A DOORMAN BACK THEN AND IT WAS ONE OF THE STORIES HE TOLD ME, IT COULD BE TRUE I DONT KNOW.

one thing we weren't short of back in the day was night clubs
Sheffielder 07-03-2007, 09:37 Penthouse had some amazing artwork on the walls - all hand painted too, with some equally impressive art on the staircase up to the club.
I don't think Josephines ever recovered from the shooting outside the club to be honest.
The Limit is just legendary in Sheffield as a venue/club.
There's a picture of Scamps and a few of the Limit on the Sheffield History website - http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk

I REMEMBER BOB ROONEY WHO RAN THE DISCO.
SAW JOHNNY CASSON START HIS COMEDY CAREER ,AFTER RICHARD HARDING WAS LATE DUE TO SESSION RECORDINGS I THINK WAS FOR TOM JONES.
REMEMBER THE MANFREDIS FAMILY & FRIENDS.
Plain Talker 16-03-2007, 16:21 les, love, I think your caps lock key is stuck...

Did you know Martin? I used to hang around with him a lot. Did you know he was a chef at the Crucible as well. Didn't know he DJ'd at the Daisy though must have been after I left Sheffield. Remember him and his group playing gigs there though

I spent most of my weekends at the Ozzie owl club back in 1972 onwards. Bob Rooney took over the club for a while when he was with Sandra, they were good friends of mine. Had some brilliant nights there. I saw cannon and ball there before they became famous. Does anyone remember the bunny girls there.
We used to go to the Fiesta a lot in the 70's, remember seeing Martin St. James, the hypnotist, Lulu, & Jim Davidson. The lights on the tables used to blink on & off to the music, we had chicken in a basket, then went for a dance in the disco, what a great night out, shame it closed down.
My mum and dad used to go to the Fiesta in the 70's. I remember my mum telling me all about the acts they had seen the day after! I remember thinking it all sounded very glam and thinking to myself, that's where I am going to go when I grow up! Of course, it had gone by then and I went to Cairo's, Josphine's, Turn-up's etc!!!
grahamprie 17-05-2007, 14:54 Hi, I'm surprised there's only one mention of SHADES on Ecclesall Road. It was probably a bit down-market for a lot of people, but we had some great music there in the late 60's. I moved away in 1970 but went on to run the Northern Soul all-nighters at Cleethorpes, so the music I found at SHADES lived on. I'm trying to locate the people I worked with, so if any of you know of anyone who worked there, I'd love to hear from you. All the best, Graham
Nigel Womersle 18-05-2007, 00:41 Wallbuilder, that bouncer was my family-friend Alan Kilby, who is indeed profoundly deaf, but in no way shape or form could he be described as Dumb.

Plain Talker 18-05-2007, 09:03 Hi. Did he live in Ecclesfield at all?
Gosh Nigel! that's an old post :P ! From way back in Oct 2004! lol...
Not sure if it was Ecclesfield..*scratches head in a "finking" fashion...
Hmm.. it may have been.
He definitely spent a lot of time on the Arbourthorne, where I lived; I know his mum lived on the "arbour", because his mum, and my mum used to go to bingo together, at the tenants hall.
Mr.Freedom 18-05-2007, 12:28 To those of you who went to the Ark, Do you remember a lad called Mick Grudge who later moved to America to be the sax player in the band Brass Construction (or is my mind playing trcks on me)

shelby46 19-05-2007, 02:09 I used to go in the Cavendish, when all women wore long dresses and men wore suits - no casual dress allowed! I'm surprised no one has mentioned Maximillions - can't remember where it was though. Does anyone remember the upstairs bar at the Timbertops in Shirecliffe? Police used to raid it regularly and throw all the underage drinkers out in the early 70s! Not me. of course
Plain Talker 19-05-2007, 08:51 Maximillions was on Charter square, opposite debenhams.
A chap called Max Omare owned it (not o'mare, BTW) it was previously called Genevieves, after his daughter.
do you remember thereally "imaginative" radio hallam jingle for Maximillions?
"Max-i-mill-yons,
makes ya feel like a mill-ion"

Those were the days..............:)
AH those Fiesta memories... I remember Bob Munday - and something about him being a musician. Could have drummed for Roy Orbison but it's testing my memory something chronic... I recall Bob wore dark sunnies and had light hair. I also remember the fun gals from Stockton, Freddie Starr's antics, Tommy Cooper's gout - he wore a slipper held together with a safety pin, Warren Mitchell taking a fully clothed shower with a Fiesta Fawn - this was when the uniform was red wet look hot pants and white pastic boots... We Fiesta Fawns sweated that much in our hot pants that our white undies would turn pink from the dye... Wish I had some pics...
Andy the dj 03-01-2008, 00:57 Worked in a few of the great Sheffield nightclubs mainly one nighters apart from Tiffinys on London road, what a great place, plastic palm trees and all, also worked at the Silver Palace resturant next door used to be called the China Gardens any one remember it?
also had some very good nights in the Hermitage pub on London road, got together with my first wife in there although we worked together in the night club up the road.
also met my current wife in there. I did the disco nights on a Wednesday and they had a sing-a long night on Sunday and strippers at lunch time for a while.
GREAT WARDS BITTER TOO.
bluesdudeo 03-01-2008, 02:45 DJ at Crazy Daisy called Martin Manterfield, sadly no longer with us. Does anyone out there remember Pete Baines with the platform shoes and flash car ?
I remember Martin Manterfield well. We worked together at the Crucible after doing our apprenticeship at Granville college. Also worked in Jersey with him. I don't think Martin DJ'd at the Daisy but he did play there a few times with his band....Schoolboy .Martin on Vocals ,Mick Philips on Guitar, Trick on Drums and Neil Harget on Bass Guitar. I too remember Pete Baines and his flash car ... Kit car was it ? ..copy of the American ...can't remember now ...something nasty.
Not only do I remember the plastic palms at Tiffanys - I remember the piped sound of twittering birds. I worked at Tiffanys for about a year from the first night it opened. You'd hear the birdsong distinctly before the place filled up, or in the cloakroom. I can't remember the name of the first resident band - two female singers wearing blond wigs backed by 3 or 4 males - they used to drive up from London.

Memories, memories. I was trying to find out just exactly what year Hendrix played the City Hall Sheffield, I know he also played the Mojo the same year. The Penthouse was one of the places we used to go many moons ago!!! Been great fun reading all the replies, and brought back many good memories. Hendrix played in 1967 I believe, I was just a slip of a lass then still at school............... ahhh the memories :-)

We used to go to 'Baileys' quite a bit in the 70's
Before we started going into town, we'd go to the Heartbeat (now Stars and Mayfair) on a tuesday night and when we got in half the school was there. Remember 'Mighty Atom' ?

searcher1 06-03-2008, 08:02 Amazing eh!
Many years have past and I can still remember seeing Les Dawson at Club Fiesta in around 1971/1972! Club Fiesta, the biggest club in Europe with nothing in the way to stop you seeing the stage. If I recall those days 'artistes' used to have restrictions on drinks being served whilst they performed? Even had my 1st pint of bitter at the pub at the end of Pond Street (Fitzallen Square end).
Hehe, I even had a 'Bailey's' membership card and anyone remember the (grotty) Penthouse Suite - they always said it seldom got cleaned which is why the lights were always so dimmed.
Then there's was Samatha's disco on Queens's Road (part of the Mecca entertainments suite). Now I feel old! LOL

bigbandidoxx 06-03-2008, 15:46 I was drinking in town with my mates from around 1971 to 1977 and I remember the 'Rank' (didnt it become Steelys?) - had some really great Saturday Nights..
The Penthouse in Dixon Lane was brill - I think a guy called Mick Castledean used to be the bouncer....
The Fives Ways does anyone remember this place ? - it was a Motel out through Dore ! you had to get there by car/taxi.. so there was never any trouble ....
At the Limit - I saw The B52's and INXS
And of course the Nelson - and the Buccaneer to of the greatest pubs and had the greatest music in town ........
Those were the days !!!!

searcher1 07-03-2008, 02:17 Okay anyone remember the early 70's - Queens Road ...
Mecca Entertainments centre which encompassed The Silver Blades Ice Rink (dodgy big time then), Samatha's Discoteque (1st Floor) and Mecca Bingo (ground floor) which on Friday/Saturday nights from 9pm till 2am became the Alhambra. The Alhambra which was a seriously packed place weekly and had a £2 admission charge (if I recall)? Must not forget the Craywood casino (very exclusive and posey) in the lower ground floor.

Doe's anyone remember the gogo dancers from the 60's early 7o's particularly anyone with the surname brown
For anyone who fondly remembers, The Mojo, the Penthouse, Down Broadway, The Ark and other local clubs.
The murals and posters that I and others painted and produced in those places are all included in a new book, 'Pop Art of Sheffield's King Mojo Club & Beyond' that I co-authored with Dave Manvell and Peter Stringfellow.
It can be bought in Sheffield or online at local publishers youbooks. Its only £9.99 and the authors royalties are going towards a new brittle bone canner for the Sheffield Childrens Hospital.
Please spread the word.
The 60s! What a ride!

Paul Norton

There was a mighty atom with Les Dawson, the one I'm on about wa the DJ at the Heartbeat late 60's early 70's. His name is Chris Crossley (Ithink) and he was recently on Come Dine With Me.

Buccaneer 31-01-2009, 21:03 Penny Farthing, best club in town.
I agree entirely.
Fantastic times
John Peace 28-10-2009, 15:06 Hi, I'm surprised there's only one mention of SHADES on Ecclesall Road.
As I recall the Shades was a place of Colour. Used to go there on Saturday nights.
gladys clark 29-10-2009, 11:36 At 15 (looking 25 in my "cocktail dress") the Locarno was quite sophisticated a guy asked my if I wanted a drink (I didnt drink) and trying to look "grown up" asked for a dry sherry!!! spent tne next hour looking like I'd sucked a lemon.
Went dancing at the City Hall the Students Union and Nether Edge hall (jazz) and jiving at Frechville early 60's
Remember most of these clubs. But no one mentioned the esquire on leadmill road. Am I the only one old enough to remember this club? Must have been mid sixties.

It was during the Second World War, cdt.
The city centre store was bombed, and the nightclub/ cinema building was used as a temporary base for a while.

Many thanks PT this will now be brought up the next time we are at the watering hole.
