Hi,
We're looking to move into an apartment/flat/whatever in Sheffield but don't really know the residential areas.
We would appreciate recommendations for pleasant areas that:
Are reasonably quiet/ safe
Preferably in walking distance of the city centre
Won't cost an arm and a leg each month
Have reasonable local facilities.
Suggestions appreciated. :-)
Walkley fits all the above, we pay £550 a month for a 3 bed (nice) house. Crookes is also recommended.
Good luck, we had a nightmare trying to find somewhere that matched everything you say. Managed it in the end, but a lot of the estate agents out there want suing under the trade descriptions act for what they class as a decent residential property/area!

In walking distance of city centre are:
Heeley
Sharrow
Nether Edge
Broomhall
Broomhill (very studenty)
(all are quite cheap / nice areas near to good facilities)
Other areas a short bus ride/tram ride away that are nice aswell:
Meersbrook / Abbeydale / Hillsborough / Walkley
Avoid like the plague:
Pitsmoor
Burngreave
Norfolk Park
Upperthorpe
(quite rough)
Expensive areas:
Ecclesall / Crookes
hope that helps!

Hey Thanks very much! :-)
We will take your suggestions into consideration and start looking for a place pretty soon!
that could be quite useful as i'm looking at moving to Sheffield and getting a place, preferably a house for me and my gf. She's at Sheffield Uni and we will both be working at Morrisons in Hillsborough so i'm looking for somewhere within reach of both of those.

Andy I have to take issue with Stella Marie as I think what she has put is quite misleading, I've lived in Sheffield all my life so here we go.......
The most exclusive post codes of Sheffield tend to be around the South West of Sheffield, S10, S11 & S17 and within those these tend to be the best areas...Fulwood, Ranmoor, Nethergreen, parts of Broomhill, Ecclesall, Parkhead, Whirlow, Ringinglow and Dore. Most of these areas tend to have a mix of housing types and varying rents. If you're looking for a 2 bed flat you'll need to pay around £600/month.
If you'd like to be close to the University I would recommend either Broomhill or Ranmoor. Many students opt for Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley and round the Botanical Gardens and roads off Ecclesall Rd and Hunters Bar. Ecclesall Rd is very popular at night because of the spectrum of bars and resturants.
Whichever area you decide to live in runs the risk of crime. Criminals don't just decide to stay local to where they live and it's not uncommon to hear stories of people suffering attacks/burglaries in leafier and more desirable parts of Sheffield.
Crookes/Walkley suffer more than their fair share of burglaries as there are many narrow streets of terraces that students and other renters occupy. Upperthorpe is an area is on the up, it borders Walkley and Birkendale on the edge of Upperthorpe is very nice. Some muggings around Broomhall, Nether Edge & Sharrow Lane.
Areas like Norfolf Park had a bad reputation years ago, but in the last few years have been undergoing regeneration with the local authority and developers spending loads there, the Tower Blocks have gone and there are now very desirable villages springing up there like the Queens Tower Development off Park Grange Road.
The areas I'd avoid are: Burngreave (aka Ganga Valley), Pitsmoor, Firth Park, Parson Cross, Firvale, Manor Top, Park Hill, Wybourn, Gleedless Valley.
In some parts of areas reagrding as "up and coming" like Heeley and Meersbrook there are also bad pockets where Pizza Hut wont deliver because of aggro from youths, Valley Rd springs to mind. Sharrow Lane and Cemetery Rd are also a bit dodgy on the fringes of Hunters Bar and Psalter Lane.
Like in any place nowadays - just be careful when it's dark and don't flash ur mobile around!
Hope this helps.
Thanks for that information thats good stuff to know
It seems i have now found the best place to try and find out a little more about Sheffield and what it is really like to live there
Thanks guys

Hi, I have lived in Sheffield all my life, (so far!). I live in firth Park and the street I live on is great. We have a low crime rate and a 'village' atmosphere. I would do anything for my neighbours and vice versa. Summer is great for barbeques and everyone is pleasant. It doesn't matter where you live in Sheffield.... the people are all great!! I would not therefore avoid Firth Park 'like the plague' as someone has suggested. I would be very selective in whatever area you choose.
Thanks
