View Full Version : Love Actually - feel good? Or horrific drivel?
neeeeeeeeeek 11-09-2007, 09:17 Not exactly topical but having had a conversation with a fellow forumer I was shocked and stunned to find that said person liked and even owned a copy of this film. OK, 4 weddings was the first and it was alright, harmless enough and well written and even funny but I do remember watching Love Actually and fully expecting it to be drivel but being shocked and stunned at how appallingly bad it actually was. So is it just me or is it really as revolting as I remember it? Don't worry, the poll is anonymous, I would hate to shatter people's opinions of a fellow forumers good taste and character when you discover they actually like such garbage.
:hihi:
Beakerzoid 11-09-2007, 10:05 Love Actually is 2 (maybe 3) good tales surrounded by a load more which are rubbish, nauseous drivel....in my opinion.
neeeeeeeeeek 11-09-2007, 10:12 50 50 at the moment, we need more voters!
There's nowhere for me to vote; the poll is too polar.
It's an OK film, I watched it all the way through and laughed a few times. There are plenty of films that haven't achieved that but it's not one that I'd list in my top 100 either.
Mrs Goose 11-09-2007, 10:19 As a former (reformed?) 'Sight and Sound' subscribing indie-film snob, I usually cope quite well these days with chick-flicks, and have a daft girly soft-spot for other Richard Curtis flicks such as Notting Hill and Bridget Jones, but Love Actually is loathsome. Utterly loathsome.

That's what I should have said but I is too stupid at words.
:)

:hihi:
I'm more than happy to 'out' myself :P - I'm unashamed about liking to watch this once in a blue moon! I didn't thing the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson section of the film was at all badly written - infact v well written. Likewise the section witht he lady with a mentally ill brother (admittedly the rest is cheesy but funny)
Neeeeeeeeeek you 'orrible little :hihi: lololol!
Awww I liked this film! not ashamed to admit it makes me cry every time I see it. :(
ReginaldD 11-09-2007, 14:16 It's not great the best thing about it is Keira Knightley looks pretty hot in it, reason enough to watch any film.
I loooooved the film. So ner. :P
I remember watching it when it came out. I mean, let's face it, there's a market for such films once a while. I recall it came out near Christmas time. So maybe due to the great marketing, even I went to watch it. I thought it was a nice film actually, as it portrayed different kind of love. Unrequited love, altruistic love, falling in love, love for a mate, love for your country...etc etc.
The shot of one of the busy airport was good filming, I thought. I distinctively remember thinking, how great it was to get so many portrait shots of people and their families. Where you wouldn't normally be able to get in other places. It's kinda heart-warming...
Oh come on Neeeeeeek, you have to admit it was heart-warming to the toes. ;)
It was a horrifically great tear-jerky movie. 8/10 !
pattricia 11-09-2007, 14:52 I just do not like Love Stories do I ? So I dont watch em.:gag:
neeeeeeeeeek 11-09-2007, 15:10 Awww I liked this film! not ashamed to admit it makes me cry every time I see it. :(
I nearly cried with the pain of watching it!
I might look at the poll results and block anyone who said they like it, they don't deserve to converse with me.
:P
StarSparkle 11-09-2007, 15:11 Horrific drivel - no question about it

I attempted to stay clear of this film but was shotgunned into watching it this year while i was in Australia (3 Czech girls thought it would be good!) strange but being away from these shores made me 'see' the film differently for all of the slushy, over romantic and a typical Curtis offering. I admitted I quite liked the film more so that i expected but was my view coloured by being there and not here?
neeeeeeeeeek i can't vote the Poll is rigged :P

I bet you spent the entire time staring the three Czech girls!
weenireeni 11-09-2007, 16:39 It's in my top 5 films ever
Its so feel good, and makes me feel happy. However if it can also make me depressed if I'm single! But it gives hope!
Love it love it love it!

That you would end up with Tony blair! :P
In my top 5 too! I love a bit of romance though, unless I'm having an 'off-men' day in which case I would probably make sick noises whilst watching :)
I have to say I enjoyed it. Especially the Storyline with Keira Knightley and the actor (whose name escapes me for the moment) who secretly fancies her.
and Bill Nighy's character is well funny
It was drivel that made me feel good, so I've not voted.
NPB! the Actor was Andrew Lincoln.
discodown 11-09-2007, 20:01 It is what it is. A turn your brain off, easy watching, cheer you up, rainy sunday afternoon movie. Nothing more nothing less.
Put it in your guilty pleasures folder along with Jerry Maguire and The Goonies
neeeeeeeeeek 11-09-2007, 20:57 I am shocked and stunned at the results.. I may have to watch it again to see if may be I was a little harsh..
I don't think I was though..

A guilty pleasure it certainly is, drivel is also fair enough but...
HA! I want a whistley smiley now - one that whistles in a triumphant manner... :hihi:

Say that again? You expect a family forum not to like a family movie... ooooh. :help: :hihi:
upinwath 12-09-2007, 05:20 It's a feel good film. I loved the comedy in it. Poor old boy bands eh ?
OP is far too harsh about it.
Come on neeeeeeeeeek, get out to HMV and buy a copy but don't forget to pop into Boots on your way home for a large box of tissues.
total womans film, and the most over the top romantic film ever done, drivel of the highest order.
upinwath 12-09-2007, 06:45 total womans film, and the most over the top romantic film ever done, drivel of the highest order.
True but I still liked it.
I don't love the film, but I don't hate it either.

Richard Curtis excelled himself writing crap on this occasion. Some of his films are just about bearable if you can ignore the terrible dialogue he writes, but this one was just... :gag:

think you'll find it's not.
total womans film...
Er, no. It's a total crap film. Don't assign the burden of bad taste to my gender, thanks very much  .
The film might superficially fulfil the requirements of the 'chick flick' genre, but it's an abomination. Films like 'When Harry Met Sally' have witty dialogue and engaging characters. 'Love Actually' was a smug, self-indulgent, onanistic love-in for Richard Curtis and his chums. 'Notting Hill' was bad, but 'Love Actually' was truly appalling.

:hihi:
The poll is not anonymous for me..good job I dont mind admitting I love the film...A good old chick flick for me..makes me laugh, cry and then nag at my hubby for not being as romantic as some of the guys in the film!!..He gets the old 'would you do that for me?' question :hihi:
neeeeeeeeeek 12-09-2007, 22:33 I was fibbing about the anonymous bit, I was not expecting so many people to like the bloody film then the rest of us could have mocked them greatly. Sort of backfired though.

Do you not feel a smug satisfaction as part of the moral minority though?

Smug satisfaction is the only thing that keeps me going in life.

I've got my own copy already. :hihi:
It's not one of the most fantastic love movies, but it's still nice to watch once a while.
