Sniffle, wimper, boo hoo, sob, howl, incoherent scream
Right now I've got that over and done with, my body is over 40 but in my head I'm still in my twenties although my last g/f was a grandmother which is worrying.

hi over 40's folks .what a breath of fresh air is it to see some older ones!! It felt that what-ever group, forum or discussion i tried to join, they seemed to be controlled and sometimes doubtful, judgemental, critical, even threatening, opinions were /are aired and viewed by some-what younger generation...Now please dont get me wrong .i love youngsters but i feel sometimes they get behind a keyboard and become someone else bigger and mightier than they really are..and to know there are folks my age here is great!!! so i feel welcome here and after a few months of reading and taking part ive loved this forum ....hope to meet some of you one day..Happy New Year!

Passing the 40 barrier was no problem for me.

The one that really hurt was going from 29 to 30. I had to be physically dragged out of the house for a celebratory drink!

41 next month.

I can remember thinking the 40-somethings looked and seemed ancient when I was a teenager. In spite of gaining a bit of wisdom as I've got older, I don't feel any different. It's helped me look at pensioners in a different light: they're probably a bit wiser still, and the wrinkly skin is just aging wrapping on a precious gift.

I loved being in my 40's--- had the time of my life, had the confidence I didn't have whenI was young.
My family was growing up and off my hands to a certain extent and I was free to live life well not to the full but nearly.

It would be doomed to failure, I'm afraid. We had a thread a while ago discussing a seperate section/chatroom for teenagers that got nowhere. Something along the lines of not wanting the forum compartmentalised.

When I was forty I had lived in a council house all my married life, so we decided to build our own house, we had no money, we borrowed money for the land, then got a building mortgage then we started to build, and we've lived in "our house"for twenty years, and we don't regret one minute of it, unfortunatly, we are having to move as my husbands health is very poor now, but the moral is don't just think about it ,do it!

Hey you! there's nothing wrong with my ears, the rest are pretty much shot, but I have got a Tshirt with " to old to die young" on the back (Billy Connolly gave me the idea) I agree we ought to have an over 40s forum, but think it will probably be doomed, the mood the mods are in at present :)

Thats so true Nitelife40

I can always remember my mum being 40 years old all the time i was growing up I don`t know why she never told us kids her real real age.

I never thought of the implications of me saying i was 28 until my son suddenly said one day, if your only 28 then that meant you were only 12 when you had me..... erm so I confessed I was older hehe

This has come as a bit of a revelation to me. Only just having joined this forum I imagined that at 42 I'd be a bit of a grandad on here. So greetings fellow coffin dodgers - an over 40's area sounds good to me - so long as it isn't a place to discuss pipes and slippers.

I'm sure I'm not the only over 40 that:

(a) goes down town every week or two

(b) drinks too much when he does

(c) enjoys the sceneary

(d) follows that with hotter curries than is good for anyone

I'm 43 - don't mind it at all!

With regard to creating separate 'age' ections of the forum it's been discussed for teenagers and younger users in the past and each time the answer has been No.

The reason, as Ant pointed out, is that it would split the Forum down. At the moment you get a thread that can be contributed to by anyone from the proverbial 8 to 80. Start having a section for the under 20s, 1 for the over 40s, and that diversity of opinion from different ages would reduce.

Current segmentation in the forum is by subject area, which is open to all ages.

So there you go.

Sorry folks.

Though not that much over! If I had it to do over again, I'd have worried less, spent the extra money and flown first class more, and paid more attention in school.

That, and watched to see exactly how my late mother-in-law made stuffing from scratch for the Thanksgiving turkey. Mine is good, but hers was the best.

I dunno you all talking about separating the Forum for you lot over 40 what about the '30 something’s!' almost 40's :o
I guess as we're between the teenyboppers an the 40's we remain standing in Limbo...

I don’t feel we should be separated... I know i have agreed in the past but someone pointed out 'We are a community'

As for chat i think it’s all to do with the mind... an how young you feel inside as to how you relate to the younger generation... vice versa (maybe)… I do agree that sometimes having younger ones at home can keep you young an up to date with the youth world… making things easier in the state of communication...

I will be 34 in March... feel, look an act much younger... (i agree i am very lucky) I also feel i can adapt to different topics of conversation of various aged people that i happen to be around... ranging from young teenagers to the much matured ages...

I think it’s a shame that it should come to separation of age groups as i really dont feel there is a need for it...

But maybe there could be certain times during the day as to who enters the room… ie: 10am – 10pm under 30’s 10pm – late over 30’s… But people must remember that as it’s a 24hr chat room it is open to everyone… but by doing this it lets people know what mixture of age groups maybe in there chatting… :D

 Just a thought... :D

Let's leave the forum as it is. I think it is healthy for people of different ages to mix together, albeit in this case, in cyber space. At 43, I think I can spot the older contributors in most cases. They tend to mention cultural references that baffle the younger posters, such as 1970s tv programmes. They also tend to congregate in great numbers in the "memories" section of the forum, relaying tales of old Wincobank etc.
By the way, I don't consider myself old at 43. Ant is right though, re the perceptions of people in their late teens and early twenties. I too used to look at people in their 30s, never mind 40s, and view them as being "on the way out". The eyes seemed to be a good indicator, and obviously a lined face. Nowadays, I am useless at telling age.
I am very happy in my 40s, except in one area. I recently made the mistake of comparing my looks today with photos of myself 20 years ago. I suppose I am fairly lucky to have a decent head of hair, and good health but the contrast really shook me up. Where is the fresh-faced, fit and always smiling lad of 1985? He cannot be found in the mirror, that's for sure.

bostonaire
10-01-2005, 09:55
well someone had to join in younger huh? credit to them though and maybe sections for 20's 30's 40's and so on could be created.... i know what youre saying though about different views on things and if anyone should want that kinda of situation they will stay on the main subjects sections ...as for me i still think a 40's one is a good idea , its mid range age of life and weve left our first half of life esp the late 40's onwards and maybe some feel the younger input of their lives can be got fom their own kids... however i shall persevere .......so you over 40's what was your first car and when .............my first car was an original E REG VAUXHALL VIVA LIGHT BLUE AND I LOVED IT TO BITS.......though it broke down every day and cost me a fortune but i kept it going thru wind and rain, and i had to order a carburetter from Laycocks" of suffolk street i think it was and wait ages for it !! .........but it was my baby .......can i just add those who say that late 30's like 39 wouldnt be able to join , well such is life, there are some things we have to accept , like we cant vote till were 18 so its no good trying to at 17, or get a buss pass till your either 60 or 65 no good moaning cos youre 59 or 64 ...see what i mean ....come 40 somethings stick with me here ...

I like the way the Forum is set up and as I read through the posts from the youngsters [tee hee] I do find out the occasional thing even if it's only a word that's been hi-jacked by them.
I don't know who tries to organise forum get togethers but have noticed two that took place in pubs. I can hold my own in a pub but might be more tempted to go to a forum meet up if it was in quieter surroundings, a coffee shop for example.
Does anyone know when you start to feel old? mentally that is

Before starting on SF I looked twenty years younger....

Now I'm a haggard, wasted man who's main aim is to keep one step ahead of the Grim Reaper....:)

And that's the touched up photo - normally I use C Montgomery Burns as my stunt-double.

I too think we should leave our forum (sorry Geoff) your forum alone. I find I value the advice of the younger ones their minds are so quick and their repartee is so funny.
What they know about life and espescially computers amazes me.
So Sheffield Forum seem to be getting the right balance.
The oldies can always say,,, whenwe did this, and whenwe did that------------ in the right section.

I only started to feel old when I became ill a few years ago.
Until then I felt exactly the same into my sixties. Partying, kareoke, Going abroad. Another meaning to the swinging sixties. The adrenalin ran and ran.
So I think if I hadn't have been ill I would have gone on with a zest for life for ever.
So I suppose its good health that is the key.

Sam the neck ache is caused by repetitive stress, usual cause is swinging your head to and fro looking at all them fresh faced young things down at Meadowhell :nono:

It makes interesting reading... especially when you have the 2 different points of views... the younger & the elder...

Good on ya... thats the way it should be... 45 isnt old anyways... :) I think it could be a case of people getting old before their time...

I'm never gonna grow up... why should we? i've always mixed with all ages younger & elder... never plan to stop talking to the younger generation... youngsters can keep you young like you say... also informed & updated on todays world

Every now and then when I'm talking to friends children I catch myself sounding EXACTLY like my parents used to be and they were OLD. I can't believe how the years have flown past and sometimes regret the amount of time I must of wasted in my twenties. However I'm not dead yet and although a bit older and wiser still want to go up in a hang glider.

A woman i used to work with always wanted Breast implants... but thought she was too young to know if that was what she really wanted... So... She waited till her 40th Birthday to go for the Op... after waiting like 20 yrs... she knew it was something that she truly wanted...

She wasnt silent about it... she wanted everyone to know what her 40th Birthday pressie from her hubby would be...

She looked fab when she came back to work...

We always joked with her... 'Life really does begin at 40!'

Her name was Gina... so we gave her the nickname 'Gina G!' :hihi:

I don't feel grown up and I know I should be, but i still wanna go to gigs and get p**ssed a a fart, listen to my music as loud as I want to, my kids tell me to turn it down, talk about role reversal! I'm a fairly regular contributor to this forum (this year at least, I've barely been away! :D ) and I am sooooo surprised at the number of people who have said they are over 40 that I would never have imagined. Sierra I pictured being about 23ish, Cutglass 26ish, Sam Miguel 38ish, Cycleracer 26ish, Nitelife 40 at 20ish, Ant 26ish, Katya 22ish, JoeP 33ish :wow: , Viking 26ish, Saxon51 38ish, Mo 35ish.

The rest of you, sorry, but I thought you were older! :D Especially you Owdlad! ;)

Spike wanted "See, I told you I was ill" on his headstone but the local council (or whoever decides these things) originally vetoed it.

He eventually got his way after a fashion and the headstone now reads "Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite." which I'm told is Gaelic for the same thing.

Hi malc
I took early retirement when I was 54 and it seems a lifetime away. You're right--- it is the start of a new life after working hard. Seems unbelievable we don't have to go out to work and there is a whole new world waiting for us at our finger tips.
Took my french O level at 60 and learned computers 4or 5 yrs ago ( took advantage of the free lessons) and there are still lots of things out there waiting for meto take in.
Glad you are enjoying your retirment long may it last.

Hi! Hazel, good to hear from you, I feel almost guilty to say I took retirement at 50, although I had a part time job until 58, as we have moved to live in Scarborough now life is great, it's nice to keep in touch with what is happening in the old place, but would not want to come back and actually live there.
This I am sure, will make me sound an old fogey, but we spend a lot of time in summer just going to the Spa orchestra concerts as we can actually afford a season ticket here, at least there is plenty to do.

I agree with you and Little Malc, there is so much we didn't have time to do when work interfered with pleasure, but I can stand all the abuse from the younger folk provided they keep working and pay their taxes, so I can lay back and think of a few MILF's :D :D :D

Like most of you replying to this thread, when you were young, you thought people who were 40 were old. In my case it was because when I was 20 my parents were 40.

By the end of this year another birthday will have come and gone, and the big 50 looms ever closer. But, I still don’t feel old.

Being called Grand-dad Steve, by the Grand-kids, still sounds strange.

Slightly off topic here.

All birthdays are special...but does anyone’s birthday fall at a time of year when people are far too busy to remember it? For example, mine falls on Christmas Eve. But even I feel sorry for the people whose birthday is Christmas day. My Gran was born on April 1st 1915 and all her life she had to put up with the same jokes.

Another thought...anyone out there born on a leap year?

I'm over 40. Whats all this rubbish about bad eyes, bad ears, sore knees and all that?

And which idiot says life begins at 40? Where the heck did that come from?

Most over 40's look and act over the hill and on the downward spiral. For many old age begins at 40.

I'm cough 45 cough and when i went to see Thin Lizzy earlier this year i was amused and shocked to see all these old people there with bald heads and erm more rotund than i remember a Lizzy audience to be.
Even worse (with the exception of the young uns at the front) we....i mean they were all doing that strange shuffling dance.
Strange how patchouly oil smells of vic nowadays...
And i'll not be going to see them again, they didn't have any 4XL thermal lizzy t-shirts at the merchandising stall.

I'm 59 and feel there's still loads to learn. I've no plans to retire yet, in fact hope to keep working for a few years. I only feel my age when I look in the mirror and it reminds me!

None of you fancy coming down to the Crucible to see Much Ado About Nothing? For £1? (Check out the Notices and Events thread if you are interested.)

It'd be great to see some of my fellow older forumers in the flesh, as it were! It's not just the young 'uns that should meet up and have a good time, y'know...

:)

I am 46. I really hope life didn't begin at 40 because it means I have to do all this again (and I have missed the first six years, this time round!)

My mind feels firmly rooted in my early 20's but my body is staring 50 firmly in the face and saying get out the way, I am coming through.

I'm sorry Hazel, but I beat you, I'm 74. 37 of them in UK, the other 37 in USA and Canada. I like to go across the street to fish for some Bass in the morning, then go off to the Shamrock to drink a little Bass in the evening. Life is great, got a few aches and pains I didn't have before but who cares.
I honestly feel sorry for younger people today. Its much harder to find work, unless you have a bunch of degrees, than when I worked. No apprenticeships, little manufacturing. Lots of jobs at McDonalds and the like, with little money, and clothes that stink to high heaven.

You will find meets posted on the Sheffield/evenings out forum, here:

http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=82

There is a monthly meet at the Rawson spring in Hillsborough on the first Wednesday of each month (just missed that) and there is one at the Harlequin next Monday. These tend to be regular but others are done on an ad-hoc basis.

Last month's meet at the Harlequin was the first "real" meet I'd been to and it was great fun, so many people and a good laugh.

And, apparently, the beer was very cheap, which seemed to be a bonus for most people :hihi:

Not forty yet, but feel older sometimes. I'm starting to sound like my parents *screams uncontrollably*

I can't even use the "you're as old as the person you feel" as I always go for the older ones :) Perhaps it makes me feel younger...?
