Why do you need to study the photographers and not the people (subjects) ?

I'm going to move this to the photographers group. I know of a few good photgraphers who hang out there.

You may find something here? If not have a browse round the net.

For formal portraits in the studio lighting is the key and there are only a couple of simple rules.

For real life situations obviously speed is of the essence, but I was always advised to shoot from low down say from a kneeling position, or if in a restaurant have the camera say at table height. Other that that it is down to the photographers eye.

If I got one good picture out of a roll of 36 (candid photography) I thought I was doing well.

Have a look at Karsh's work, he was the master of portrait photography.

Happy days!
