View Full Version : Sheffield......have we any good antique shops?
crowefan 09-01-2005, 10:54 there is alot of tat around................ for a city the size of sheffield there seems very few antique shops of note...
I have been to the one at Ecclesfield, and Cawthorne but where are the "good" quality shops....tell me?
If you dont mind a little run out, Holmfirth has some excellent shops with olde world and stuff.
Dronfield Antiques on Abbeydale Road seems to have some good stuff in alot of the time. It's also part of the 'Golden Mile' of antique shops on Abbeydale/London Road, so you should find at least one shop you like there.
WallBuilder 09-01-2005, 11:00 Depends what you are looking for, I'm sure there are a few shops on London Road and Abbeydale road that would get your attention. Then there is the Antiques Emporium at Heeley
Snook you beat me to it!!
crowefan 09-01-2005, 11:08 the emporium has been visitied................no comment
thanks guys keep em comming.....Somewhere there is a grandfather clock with my name on it.............
For a grandfather clock try John Shaw antiques at Parkgate Rotherham
WallBuilder 09-01-2005, 11:20 A grandfather clock....... Hhmmmm
A very sought after item I would imagine and therefore exttemely rare.
How about an auctioneers, surely there must be one left in the city and they often have antique auctions.
I know my sister looked for this elusive item and had to search country-wide, sorry!!
msbehavin 09-01-2005, 11:39 best thing is to cut out the middle man altogether and get yourself down to an auction which is where all the guys who have these 'antique' shops get their stuff then add on a massive mark up. Its fun at the auctions and not as intimidating as you might think. Just go along a couple of times to watch and then try bidding. Recommended ones are ELR on Shalesmoor and Dowse (somewhere near West Bar nick) - Ellis Willis and Beckett have them too but its mainly stuff like house clearances and shop closing down stock - the odd antique can be picked up too tho! - happy hunting!
WallBuilder 09-01-2005, 13:32 Barmouth Court Antiques Centre have got one in now, I have sent you a pm

There's a 'clock shop' at the Ridgeway Craft Centre. The guy has loads of old clocks which he sells and repairs. They are mainly mantle size clocks but he does sometimes have grandfather ones. If he hasnt got any in stock I bet he'll know a man that has!
I know there use to be a couple of good ones on West St, don't know if there still there now.
clogginchris 09-01-2005, 15:32 There's a nice Antique shop on Division Street. The owner always seems very obliging - I'm sure he'd be able to give you some help.
Have you tried Langton's? Click here (www.antiquestradegazette.com/directories/dir_results_detail.asp?CID=12688&pagetype=ad&client_id=12688&level=&ET=AC&type=A&referrer=bbc) for info. I've been there but I wouldn't know if it's a particularly good one or not cos it's the only Antiques Shop I've been to!
Not in Sheffield, but not far is Elsecar Heritage centre- it's signposted from juntion 36 of the M1.
i completely agree crowefan, sheffield is lacking in good antiques shops as well decent
delis ..bookshops...restaurants.....independant boutiques.....galleries.....etc etc
For a city of its size its shocking what poor sheffielders have to put up with.
ok i know this kind of complaint has been covered extensively but it still makes me feel down
:(
devonshire street, shop just called antiques, the owner nick is a sound bloke, lives near me
Don_Kiddick 10-01-2005, 19:40 Yes there are loads of excellent antique shops but they are all in Rotherham; Rawmarsh High Street.
There's a superb auction house too at Thurcroft;
Paul Beightons.
www.paulbeightonauctioneers.co.uk

There is/was a clock and timepiece specialist here, can't be certain haven't been for a while but its well worth a look.
There is also an antique centre at Wentworth not far from Elsecar.
crowefan 12-01-2005, 22:21 come on there must be more out there???
There are a couple of antique places down the road from the Virgin gym, never been in them though.
Alastair 16-01-2005, 09:38 Try Hemswell Antique Centres all on a disused ex WW2 airfield out past Gaisborough about an hours drive from Sheffield.
There are many outfits there selling some quality stuff, but the main one is

There are no quality antique shops in the Sheffield area, there are plenty of junk/victoriana dealer's, depends on what you are looking for, If it's a proper antique then go and have a word with Nick on Devonshire St, he's about the only dealer who knows his stuff.
There use to be a couple of over priced antique shops up at Crooks, don't know enought about antiques realy to be sure they were over priced, just seemed a lot to me at the time.
Antique Road Shows about as far as i get, (on tv).
hennypenny 05-11-2009, 11:43 Resurrecting an old thread as many of the shops mentioned on here are now closed. I have heard that Sheffield Antiques Emporium is reopening though - has anyone visited it yet?
Elsecar Heritage Centre is thriving and growing, they have put lots of extra units on, it is well worth a visit.
try langtons on London road looks small at the front but is in fact quite large
Springtime 05-11-2009, 15:18 There is a shop on Abbeydale Rd that sells all old furniture and lamps. My husband and I bought a beautiful old mirror and lamp from there a while back.
elliebee 05-11-2009, 15:24 theres a couple on sharrowvale road. Ones in a garage type place and the other ones a cute little shop, both worth looking in!
Dovetail Antiques & restorations specialises in furniture. He sometimes gets grandfather clocks in. He's situated on Abbeydale road, across the road from Dronfield antiques.
abigaler 05-11-2009, 21:01 try Antics on Ecclesall road (if she's not busy watching birds of prey in her garden) plenty of good shabby chic and antiques
abi
rothschild 05-11-2009, 22:36 I can recommend Elsecar as well.
We spent a good hour or so poking around last Sunday and I didn't come away empty handed either.
I have finally found a leather topped desk at a reasonable price so I'm more then happy. Yey......I got my desk and I lurve it. :~)
Alastair 05-11-2009, 23:48 There aren't any high quality antique shops in Sheffield. That's not to say you might find something you like in any of the shops mentioned above, but there is nowhere you can go to find consistently high quality.
Is there anywhere good within an hour or so driving from Sheffield?

just wondering , how do you define high quality ? - age ? condition ? style ? type of wood etc. , price ? ?

peakpractice 06-11-2009, 20:09 If you have to go further, then Bakewell and Ashbourne have some quality shops
...Somewhere there is a grandfather clock with my name on it.............
It might just be here (http://www.storyclocks.co.uk/)
this one is only about 45mins from Sheffield

The big question eh? I don't define quality by price as an antique will have its own intrinsic quality regardless of whether someone gives it to you or a dealer charges double its market value.
Quality in antiques is the same as quality in modern consumer foods. A quality item will be very well made, very well designed. For an antique it will also be in good condition.
abigaler 07-11-2009, 06:46 price was said tongue in cheek , but I was just curious about your expectations .
babyboom 07-11-2009, 15:32 Banners antiques at Attercliffe, they have the odd bit of tat but also some good stuff in too. I recently got a lovely set of Victorian Drawers from there, much better qualtiy than modern stuff.
