Rich 09-01-2005, 12:20 Crown and Glove in Stannington, very quiet cos it's mostly older people who frequent it even though I class it as my local. I used to frequent the Sportsman in Stannington but it got full of idiots off the estates who caused trouble all the time and acted like chavs. igm1 09-01-2005, 12:26 Yeah the Sportsman is an awful pub now. Crown and Glove is nice, but straight across from it is the Hare and Hounds, which is full of loud underage drinkers. Yes I am underage, but when I go for a drink at least I do it quietly carcrash 09-01-2005, 12:32 The white lion at heely has a no smoking area. It is reasonably quite most nights blue-kat 09-01-2005, 12:47 try Hillsborough Hotel http://www.crownbrewery.com/HillsboroughHotel/HillsboroughHotel.html nice quiet pub, no juke box, no bandits and heard the beer is good too. tslogf74 09-01-2005, 12:49 The Gardeners' Rest on Neepseed Lane has a non-smoking room, it's quite small though. There's also no swearing allowed, if memory serves. Lindos 09-01-2005, 13:32 Originally posted by tslogf74 The Gardeners' Rest on Neepseed Lane has a non-smoking room, it's quite small though. The atmodphere is friendly, and its quiet most nights except Saturday (sometimes live music) and Sundy (quiz night). There are real ales, too, and fantastic food. it's a proper, "pub-y" pub, not one of those dreaful theme-y type pubs with their wattered down "bright" beers, (YUK!) it's a great place. well worth a try PT duffman 09-01-2005, 14:45 Originally posted by Rich Crown and Glove in Stannington, very quiet cos it's mostly older people who frequent it even though I class it as my local. Surely the older poeple who go in will not stand for this, you have to have lived in the village 40 years before you are accepted in there after you have picked up the accent. Sportsman I only visited once and it seems like I missed it's charm as it was full of idiots and the bus stop got smashed. Same with the Hare and hounds but I remember visiting when I was not old enough to drink, although all I did was have some games of pool, etc. But how long will it be before they bring in no smoking at the local? tslogf74 09-01-2005, 14:47 The Fat Cat has to be the most overrated in pub in Sheffield IMO. If you're in the area go to the Kelham Island Tavern instead. That has a large no smoking room now. clogginchris 09-01-2005, 15:36 The Bath just off West St has a no smoking room and is quietish during the week Bilge 11-01-2005, 12:17 Agree about Fat Cat. I like it but the main bar [the more interesting room] is a complete smoke box. The non-smoking room has no bar and so seems isolated from 'the action'. Also Gardeners Rest - the beer always has far too big bubbles on it and consequently no head retention. What good is that in a real ale pub in the north? Same in the Cask and Cutler - which is actually too quiet and rather unnerving. For quietish pubs with proper well kept beer and not too much of a smoke problem I recommend: Centrally: Kelham Island Tav, Bath Hotel, Rutland, Red Lion, Red Deer [after the post-work mob have gone home]. In S6: Hillsbro Hotel, New Barrack Tav. spiffymonkey 11-01-2005, 12:21 Originally posted by nitelife40 does anyone know any nice quiet non smoking pubs in sheffield .that are very quiet most nights? Starting at the Hillsborough hotel, I recommend going down to the Gardeners Rest, then the Fat Cat and end up in the conservatory at the Kelham. Very nice stroll. If you fancy going a bit further, there is the Riverside, but I tend to stop at the Kelham. Of all of them, I frequent the Hillsborough Hotel the most. Usually Tuesday for the quiz and Thursday for the 'nothing doing' night. Beer is great, with in house beer available as well as many guest ales. Strix 11-01-2005, 12:25 There's a big sign outside the Pheonix at Ridgeway declaring that it's a no smoking pub. Last time I was in (about 3 years ago) it had lost it's soul though and the food was overcooked freezer rubbish with a high price tag. Has it changed yet? Bad_Hair_Day 11-01-2005, 14:40 The Phoenix is a no smoking pub, and the food's not bad (lovely Sunday lunch served until about 9pm I think) plus full menu. It wasn't that busy when we went in though, and was quite cold inside, even though we sat right next to the open fire - we still struggled to warm up! I suppose if the place was fuller, you wouldn't notice the chill so much. It's a nice enough place, with traditional fittings (wooden beams and stuff) but the atmosphere was missing - maybe we just went in on a bad night (or a night when the heating had broken down?) |
