After going to Rotherham fair yesterday, I got some delightful winter white hamsters. They are two girls and absolutely adorable! Has anyone else got any of these? They seemed very tame on the stall yet seem a little timid now, hope they are happy in their new home! :loopy::hihi::|:love:

Winter white! wow! I bet they look stunning! I had a number of satinised cream hammies and they were beautiful. I love rodents!

are they dwarf hammies, or are they siberian hammies?
If they are siberian, you will definitely need to have tehm housed seperately, as Siberian are not at all social. indeed they will fight, literally, to the death, another hammy.

Roborovski and chinese dwarves are more sociable. They can live in pairs, but you do need to be prepared to seperate them if they get nasty with each other.

I just thought I'd point this out, for the sake of your hammies, and to prevent you becoming upset if they don't get on, and do fight.

best of luck with them.

Thanks for the info, I did check all this out before so they should be fine! They are dwarf hamsters, both female, I wanted males ideally as it said they get on better than females. One is a pearl winter white the other a sapphire and they are stunning!! Do you know if they are nocturnal like syrian ones?

not so much nocturnal, but from my own experience of dwarf hams they tend to be active at dawn and dusk, mainly.

I'm pleased you checked it out beforehand, rather than just getting them and then realising you couldn't provide the best environment for them.

Well I have always had Syrian hamsters and I felt ready for the next challenge! I sense it will be one as well they are about the same size as my syrians head!

WW's are just like your Campbells, except a few slight variations like face shape, dorsal stripe and the number of 'scallops' on their sides. For a long time they were thought to be the same species but have fairly recently been classed as being separate to the Campbells.

Because they are so closely related they are also able to hybridise, resulting in a lot of Hybrids in petshop stock.

I found WW's to be very friendly and are perfect little 'splats' where they do just that on your hand!

Here are some of my WW's that I had a couple of years ago: Winter Whites (http://www.gerbilsite.com/OurGerbils/winterwhites/Nila/milwaukeeandnila.html)

Mine look like this (have been unable to make them stay still long enough to photograph yet!) One is almost all white with the grey stripe, the other a more bluey colour, I am getting them out for the first time tonight, gave them a couple of nights to settle in and have been talking too them and feeding them treats through the bars!

Btw, a lot of people find having two of everything helps, this way they won't squabble and potentially end up attacking each other. So that's two water bottles, two wheels etc. To help stop and squabbles over food try sprinkling it around the cage instead - this'll also help to induce natural foraging behaviours.

My pair did fall out and I had to separate them, I'm thinking it was because they'd been put into a new home and I hadn't given them two wheels yet… Oh well. I know plenty of people do manage to keep them together.

I really hope mine dont fall out, they wont me up sqwarking at one point last night and seemed to be play fighting, i will get them another wheel tonight then, one was in it all night and the other nibbling the bars, i did feel it was a bit unfair!

I had the twins out for the first time last night, one was fine, a little timid but sat in my hands quite happile, the other however was really jumpy and a nightmare to hold full stop! they were so small i couldnt believe it, made my syrian feel like a small dog afterwards!! hope the timid one gets bolder soon!

Aw congratulations :D

I have two campbells (although being pet shop originally - I got them as a rehome from someone who bought them from a pet shop - they're more likely crosses).

I have males and they don't get on (had already been split up when I got them) and whilst one is hardly ever out of bed, the other is active ALL the time!
