View Full Version : Where is woodhouse, whats it like?
mwright3 08-01-2005, 17:55 my mate has offered me a room in a rented house in woodhouse, which i dont even know where it is. rent is dirt cheap as its a 'matey' deal with the landlord but not sure what area is like, currently at west 1 which is obviously a bit luxurious but at £525 a month compared to about £120 a month I'm thinking as long as i dont get shot it cant be that bad and house is being done up so wont be a hole. i have a car so transport wouldnt be a problem. just wondering what the area is like.
cgksheff 08-01-2005, 18:25 With regard to where it is: try www.streetmap.co.uk
It's OK.
The area is one big estate really, not brilliant but you could do worse.
No offense intended to Woodhouse natives.
WallBuilder 08-01-2005, 20:30 I've spent ages in Woodhouse and have never felt unduly concerned in regard to safety. They've had problems in the area with troublesome kids but nothing to write home about. There are a few decent pubs , a great chippy and a cafe/sandwich shop that is very popular.
With a car getting places is no trouble, Crystal Peaks five minutes away and Manor Top ten minutes. There is a good and regular bus service into the city centre although the local shoppijg area tends to sell anything you'd need.
Woodhouse is between Richmond/Stradbroke and Beighton and is easy enough to get too using main roads.
Possible troublesome area would be the Badger estate at the Station road end but my info is a few years out of date.
My girlfriend lives in Woodhouse, so I spend half my time there.
Like many places, it's not the place it was ten years ago, but it really is ok. Car thefts are increasing lately, but I always feel safe walking around there at night.
Not sure about it being one big estate though Rich, there are three distinct estates just in my area (mine at Southsea, the neighbouring Badger which is a bit rougher, and the larger private houses where the kids all go trick or treating as they get more goodies).
Don't expect Totley, but if the rent is cheap, it's worth a look.
mwright3 10-01-2005, 18:22 cheers, well I work next to Meadowhall so was wondering how far it is from there and how long it would take to get there and back doing a 9-5.30 job in the car so i can plan journeys. do the trams go up there from meadowhall and don valley? what about trains etc.
WallBuilder 10-01-2005, 20:34 Last time I was at Woodhouse station about two years ago there was a service going to Meadowhall, the station though isn't the easiest place to get to on foot so it depends where you are living in Woodhouse.
Driving involves a lot of main roads from Meadowhall but if you can get to the Asda at Handsworth it's then fairly straight forward.

Estate? It's a village  Like all of Sheffield it has it's share of council properties, but the'yre in small enough clutches not to overwhelm.
Crystal peaks is on your doorstep. Meadowhall 20 mins away. M1 10 mins. Train gets you into town in 10 mins.
I like it here.
We have 3(?) restaurants, an assortment of takeaways, a large branch of co-op, a martial arts studio, a gym, more churches than you can shake a stick at ( and I've not heard of some of them), shirebrook valley and Rother valley country park on your doorstep.
Anything else you may need?
Taxi from town £10? Close proximity to helipad for when your car gets stolen? American independence re-enactment society? Places to keep horses?
Edit: And PM SandraSpice or visit her website. She's out here too.

It runs into Sheffield and back out to Meadowhall! They run hourly, with a couple of extras at rush hour.
Mickyboy 12-01-2005, 13:00 My mother lives in Woodhouse and calls it 'Geriatric City'.
She's 73.
We do seem to have more old folks homes per square inch than anywhere else in Sheffield, but the residents don't hang round making a nusiance of themselves, so I don't see that as a problem.
Now the St Anne's project...... although the police say that coz they know everybody in there, they'd be downright stupid to try anything in Woodhouse.
That just leaves the crowds of teenagers that every area seems to have.

there is a council side to WH which is huge - badger est which used to have nasty rep, not sure any more though.
arent the baxondales from woodhouse - notorious naughty boys
i was born on rodger rd, which was quite nice 20 or so yrs ago. It does have the odd new est, but wouldnt be my first choice. saying that - rent looks good mate, so go for it.
saying that, taxis may be expensive to and from town
pubs round there are bit rough in village
Does anyone have an idea what Woodhouse Village iis like at night. With 2--3 pubs and fast food outlets what's the nuisance value, noise, and are there lots yobbos hanging around. exampe ---would someone run away with my flower pots?

Why Hazel ? you moving to Sheffield just so you can go to the SF Christmas pary ?
Well I would have been nearer the Christmas party, but I think the party is now a knees up in the pub owing to declining numbers.
I think it's cos someone blabbed about outsiders being invited.
If they had kept quiet no one would have noticed.

Dont need to go through Handsworth top, go through Orgreave and down toward Morrisons at Catcliffe, under Parkway and onto Airport road to Shepcote Lane then to Meadowhall.
Will be much quicker when the new bridge at Orgreave finally opens.
Thanks for the info.
I know where Woodhouse is (didn't want to start a new thread ) just wanted to know what the area, in the viilage, was like after the pubs turn out.

Woodhouse is where people go to die, it's like a huge pensioner village, you can't get near the post office most days for people buying one stamp.
I probablely am going there to die Nick but I do buy my stamps a dozen at a time.

retrokez 10-12-2005, 19:58 i lived in the very end house on stradbroke road at the village end, just next to the old peeps home & across from the start of the oneway. we NEVER had any probs. no trouble with kids & nothing when the pubs turn out. was a very nice place to live.
Thank you for your reply. It was exactly what I wanted to know.

I think the answer is 'be sensible'
Woodhouse has it's fair share of bored teens, and the inhabitants of the St Anne's Project to contend with.
Broken windows are not uneard of. Stolen cars have been known. Tagging happens. It's not unlike the rest of sheffield really ;)
hi stix
thanks for reply.
What is tagging.?
