Hmmmm good spanish food.

Viva Tequila at Gleadless Townend does a good mexican.
Que Tal I feel is spanish/mexican food too.
La Bamba at the bottom of the moor is suppose to be good too!

Nights out... Takapuna at the bottom of west street! Get there any friday or saturday from 10.30pm onwards and a cracking night guaranteed.

Ever heard the song 'Oh Carolina' by shaggy?

Not to worry...one of the moderators will move this to the correct forum.

Yeah Taka's has a dance floor upstairs and get VERY VERY busy. The resident DJ is Dan Seaman from the nightclub Bed and they also have other great DJ's too.

The drinks aren't cheap, but where in town is? Nice place, nice staff! It's like the 'in' place if there is such a thing!

HI Carolina
Hope your enjoying Sheffield so far.:)
Can't really think of anywhere for spanish food, though as DaBouncer said viva tequila is good for mexican, think you can take your own wine on some nights i belive, not to sure about takapunas being the place to be,its pretty nice but everyone in there looks straight off the toni & guy production line,Sola is where the real "in" crowd hang out!:)

Like i said takapunas is ok,but it has some truely bizzare door rules,i've heard of people getting turn away for being dressed to smart!:o
The new Revolution is pretty nice in West One if you aint checked that out, plus there loads of other good bars around devonshire green.

DaBouncer

Bah, they get turned away if they aren't dressed trendy! A scraggy shirt doesn't get you entry!

Classic Rock
27-08-2003, 08:51
We often get a Spanish/Mexican crowd who come into the Classic Rock Bar. They have the feeling that they can stay all night and are really slow and finishing their drinks come closing time. The bar is often locked up, cleaned up and they are still celebrating between themselves. Only when we start getting really cross and pulling faces and shaking fists do they get the hint that the place is shut. Other than that they drink like fish so we put up with it!

Anyway, you're welcome down at the CRB on Ecclesall Rd if you enjoy a bit of the good old rock music. Welcome to Sheffield!

Carolina,
Go to the Forum on a Tuesday night, they have a Salsa night. Between 9-10pm they have salsa lessons then from 10pm onwards it;s salsa dancing and drinking! Seems to attract quite a large Spanish/Sapnish speaking crowd, my fiancees friend goes a lot and he is Columbian.

Cristobal. Or Red2. The correct format en espanol is "Como esta usted" Unless of course you were asking what Carolina is like, in which case you would say "Como es usted". No hablo mucho el espanol hoy en dia but I think this is correct.

Taka's aint posh, but it is very nice. It's more a trendy bar... no effort with your clothing then no entry.

It has alot of regualr clientel including pop stars, soap star (I kid you not).

I'm going to be boring now and go back to the original query. The best Spanish place in town is definitely Spinroc's in Crookes. It's not a proper restaurant but it does great tapas and has a top bar next door. Where else in Sheffield can you get sangria on draught?

And while you're all speaking Spanish, any idea where to find someone who teaches the Latin American version of Spanish in Sheffield?

Are you a student Carolina? I am assuming so! Does the University not have any meetings for Spanish Students, they usually have nights out I think for Spanish, Greek, etc etc so they can get to know each other and other people at the uni?

Hope this helps!

Hi Carolina

Freshers week is a week usually organized by the university to welcome new students (freshers) into the university and to help them join societies etc. I am pretty sure both universities have societies which would accomodate your interests! Have you tried contacting the Students Union offices in the uni? They usually have good selections of things to do and people to meet.

I see you will be a final year student aswell then, if you are topping up your HND to a BSc.

Drop me a line if you need any more help, if need be I will pop to the university with you so too what we can find on offer. ps. I am at Hallam - do you have your enrolment sorted out yet?

Good start contacting the union! I enrol on the 26th (Friday)!
The Students union is a good place to start, but also check the Union at Sheffield University.

theres definatley some snobbery going on between the two.

theres some truth in it but most is rubbbish. sheff hallam is a 'new' university (former polytechnic) so therefore inferior to the old established one but hallam is ranked one of the best new uni's. sheff uni does more traditional courses whereas hallam is accused of supplying 'mickey mouse' courses because many are more vocational.

having studied at both i would say theres pros and cons of both. for instance hallams libraries (and online catalogues) are far superior to sheff uni's. i found essay/exam marking slightly tighter at the uni, but many professers lecture/teach at both institutions so it can't be that much of a difference.

theres definately a difference in the vibe at each and you could crudely identify which group of students went to which uni, esp through their attitude and dress.

I like reading, dancing salsa, travelling, clubbing (Bed on Bank Holiday weekend was BRILLIANT), going to the cinema (Terminator 3 is crap), listening to Big John at Breakfast (yeah, baby!), going out for dinner (anybody knows a decent place to eat Spanish food?), surfing the internet, sending e-mails...
Did you see F1 on Sunday? Fernando Alonso was amazing!!!!
And the athletics?? WELL DONE Darren!!!
C'mon! Drop me a line!!! :D

There is some rivalry, but its hardly a big thing. Both uni's have largely decent students you can make friends with. I for one have a fair number of friends up at Sheffield Uni.

I can say on thing though, Sheffield Uni run some of the most bull***** courses I have ever seen, when if you actually attend and manage to stay awake though the lectures, you have probably less chance of scoring a decent job at the end in anything worth while other than working for interflora.

Although the red brick has a more "upper class" ;) attitude or so they like to think, I would suggest in the real world its a little bit draconian. Many of the folk I know are med students so are geared to this kind of thing, but seriously - I think in many cases Hallam students are much better dressed and more relaxed than those from across town! Ooh, and another thing, I think we are getting the former centre for popular music as our new students union - so up yours Sheffield Uni, you bloody scumbags:lol: ! (Ahem, outburst over!)

Of course I am not biased to either Uni (I want my degree and be out!), but Hallam does have as previously mentioned far far superior library services which Sheffield Uni students use (without may I add being asked for ID) whereas if you want to go into a Sheffield Uni library be prepared to put your balls on the table for ID aswell!

Hey carolina - we live just down the road from you in Thirlmere Road!

BTW - Have you been into the St. Lukes shop yet? I got a new looking suit (from Marks & Spencers originally) - a Kurt Geiger shirt and silk tie (for a job interview) all for £15!!

The ladies in there are really nice and they've got loads of stuff all well sorted with sizes on the lables. Best charity shop I've been to in a long time.

Hope you can make it to the meeting

G'day Dan and Carolina - no worries about the sheffield thing. You will inevitably meet many ppl from time to time through various social meets.

I moved up to Sheffield nearly three yrs ago. I didnt know ANYONE here which was mad. But put yourself in scenarios that you wouldnt ever consider before. Try somewhere like Casbah tonight - live gigs downstairs. Good ppl who are more than happy to chat to ya. I bricked it to start with but i have met a few ppl since i have been here and it has definitely taught me about myself------where there is a will there will always be a way!!!

Enjoy Sheffield, it wasnt built to be conquered in a day!!!

surely the ncpm is too small for a decent sized students union? :?IMHO, the ncpm should not have been sold to hallam uni, but instead the council should have had faith in the ability of the local community to run it properly for exhibitions, gigs, conferences, radio, etc and keep it open to the public. just my 2p worth :)
but Hallam does have as previously mentioned far far superior library services which Sheffield Uni students use depends what subject you're studying, though. it might well be true for social sciences (i know a fair few people who use hallams libraries for this), but there's a number of subjects that hallam simply don't teach

;)

I did Spanish at School but I left over 11 years ago and consequently I've forgotten most of it.

I did French as well, and I've forgot nearly all that as well, except the essential how to ask for a pint in a French pub ;)
