Your best bet for a motorway breakfast is to come off at a junction rather than the services. Just travel for half a mile or so and you'll soon come up to a snack wagon.

There are some just off the M1 at J35a which have been there for decades and provide superb nosh for a fraction of the cost!

It's called 'no competition', a.k.a 'monopoly'.

I have a strange liking for motorway service stations. I agree they are expensive, but there's something about them that I love. At some point in my life, I'm going to do a British Service Station tour and visit every single one in the country. Me and a friend had a conversation about wether anyone has ever done that before. Our conclusion: almost certainly.

Sad to say, but I have the same sort of love for them. I am lucky enough to see alot of them, all over the country, and I, in particular, like them at night. I find them to be similar to airports, and I can always imagine stories to go with the people you see in there at 2am. I always feel sorry for the people that work there though.

As you said, they can basically charge what they want because there is practically no competition. If you don't wanna pay it you'd better remember to pack a lunch. :)

Don't tell everyone otherwise we'll never get parked up and you wont be popular with an awful lot of truck drivers.
I'm sure there is a book that is a guide to all the decent eating places just off every motorway in the country and I've found a few nice pubs doing food purely by accident.
The service stations are useful if you want to use the loo, food and drink can be carried in the car and petrol should be bought well away from the motorway. I'm quite sure though one day the service stations will be charging you to use the toilets and even to park your car.

I think you could be right there Sidla, in fact I am almost positive that somewhere in owdlad towers there is a book on that very subject, although it's more than likely written a long time ago when I had more money than sense. So go on do an up to date version.

Does anyone know of any particular good ones - ones which are more like airport terminals than grotty services like Woodall or the one Peter Kay filmed 'The Services' at!

I feel very strongly about this and would just like to add I agree they are a total rip off. Talk about monopoly, if your hungry you need to eat and they rip you off, if your car runs out of petrol and youve nowhere else to go, they rip you off, if you want to use the toilet in many they rip you off! Even Burger Kings are about 30% more expensive and the food is manky! Lets start a petition to get them to charge proper prices!??

Way I see it, they're not a public service are they, they're private businesses so they can charge what they like. If you think they're too expensive, just make sure you're well stocked up on fuel / food from other sources. Quite simple really.

Sometimes its not as simple as that, when your journey is 6 or 7 hours and your car takes more than a tank of fuel to di it, how can you avoid them? I would never use services on short journeys but every week i drive from aberdeen to Peterborough and ive no choice other than to use them!

They are businesses but so is Microsoft and they are being taken to court!?

I agree Jamie, in fact the only thing I ever use on service areas are the toilets, every flaming one of em if Rlass is with me :(

Me to, but what about the times when youve no choice? thats when they take advantage! We dont all have the luxury of being able to do that.

There's always alternatives. It' looks like you could do with buying the book given above.

BTW, I think Wooley Edge is my favourite service station. :D

Theres no alternatives other than coming off the motorway and finding a petrol station in a place that youve never been before!? And in a 7 hour jounrye thats the last thing on your mind!?
