View Full Version : Teenagers on Newfield school bridge
Yog Sothoth 08-09-2007, 06:52 Is it just me or was the noise from the teenagers who use the new Newfield school bridge as an unofficial youth club reaching ridiculous levels last night?
Shouting, screaming and then loud music, right up until 2.30am. I think the police turned up at one point, but from what I could see/hear, they all just ran to the far end of the bridge and then down the slope, and the police just left. Then the kids came back.
Now, I appreciate that other than making a lot of noise, it could be said these kids are not doing any real harm, but to my mind, the noise is bad enough, not to mention the verbal abuse they give to anyone who asks them to be quiet, and the rubbish they chuck off the bridge into the woods below. It's also intimidating to evening dog-walkers who want to cross the bridge, and have to put up with stares and verbal insults.
I think it's time Newfield school stopped looking the other way and took some responsibility for this. After all, the school sits in the middle of a community. A community the school seem to care little about maintaining good relationships with, it seems to me.
Ther main reason the teenagers are attracted to the bridge, other than the nice convenient wide crash barriers, which have flat tops and thus act as benches for them to plant their a**ses on, is that the new lights on the bridge STAY ON ALL NIGHT!
The lights are very bright, white light type, and are incrediibly polluting. They are extremely annoying to people living close by, whose gardens are illuminated like prison camps, and who have to have their curtains closed just to be able to get some sleep.
More than that though, the lights attract the kids, who have an illuminated playground for as long as they want to stay there. So they sit and drink, smoke a bit of weed, shout and swear, and abuse local residents, and the school do nothing, don't care. Not their responsibility, although it's their lights that are making the bridge attractive to the kids in the first place. It's their lights that waste countless kWH of electricity, adding to the burden on the environment, illuminating an unused bridge all night. It's their lights which prevent local residents enjoying some hours of darkness and rest.
Come on Newfield. Show us you give a damn about the people you're surrounded by. Show some community spirit. Show some environmental conscience. Your reputation is tarnished already. The trouble on the bridge since it was built just makes it worse.
YOU DO NOT NEED THOSE LIGHTS ON AT NIGHT!
Vulcan B2 08-09-2007, 09:12 HAHAHAHA Good luck making Newfield see sense, you've got more chance of pushing a snowball up a hill:hihi:
Stockers 08-09-2007, 09:19 Their is a Thorpe House Residents community meeting held on Tuesday 11th Sept at St Pauls Centre, Norton Lees Lane.
The Newfield School Rebuild is one of the issues on the Agenda, if you or other residents feel that strongly about the new bridge you should get together and attend the meeting which is also attended by local police officers and the local MP.
I feel you should put forward your thoughts on gating the bridge and the light pollution issues.
RiffRaff 08-09-2007, 10:07 In my school days - a few years ago now, granted! - all the pupils would've been lambasted at morning assembly for any "bad behaviour" out of school hours, mainly for bringing the school into "disrepute".
Perhaps that's the difference now - shame over wrongdoing, and pride in achievements, seem to have disappeared.
I know for a fact that if local residents had reported anything like the case in point, "action" would've been taken.

cgksheff 01-11-2007, 09:50 has anyone got a number for the thorpe residents housing association?
Try and be a bit more accurate, if you are going to be a journalist! :hihi:
I don't have a direct contact, but the "Thorpe House Residents Association" meets at St Paul's Church Centre and I'm sure they will be able to give you contact details.
The contact number for St Paul's Church Centre is: 0114 255 0144 (10 'til 1, Mon - Thurs).
Stockers 01-11-2007, 10:13 You really should go and see or contact Richard at the Thorpe House Post Office on Lees Hall Ave. He's head of the Thorpe House Residents Association and a real community leader, if anything needs sorting out or any kids need keeping on order Richard is the man to see.
katie_kins 01-11-2007, 10:29 oh sorry, thorpe house! haven't got my glasses on.

4_20BLADE 09-11-2007, 11:58 your complaint is fair and very understandable but i think the goverment should realise that this is all the kids need somewher light and somewhere to sit thats all i ever needed when i wanted a crafty spliff at 14/15/16 years old although the difference was we never caused no trouble maybe the goverment should build some bike shed type places in parks with lighting because for decades kids have been drinking in parks underage drinking has always gone on and always will
ekke_287 12-11-2007, 10:44 There was a massive group of kids hanging around there on Friday night, and as I got up to my road found one of them hot wiring my car. I chased him into the woods but lost him, gave a statement to the police and was told that the chance of him being caught is unlikely. My car is undrivable thanks to these kids, and at the moment I cant afford to pay for the repairs so I'm bussing it to and from work everyday.
In my opinon something has to be done about this situation surround Newfield bridge. It's not like there just hanging about now it's moved to car-crime too. I know I can't be certain that it was the Newfield kids, but me and my family heard them walking from where we lost them, through the woods back towards newfield (we couldn't get to them due to a barb wire fence).
The police said they were aware of a problem in the area, but why aren't they doing anything? What will it take to happen before something is done?
If action isn't taken soon, I'm afraid it will just get worse.
Dizzyblonde 12-11-2007, 12:34 Kids hang around because the children's act made if very difficult for anyone to work with children. We all have ourselves to blame for the lack of alternative facilities for kids
ekke_287 12-11-2007, 12:51 Your right, lets pay our taxes to fund the council building them a brand new facility to trash. Kid's cause trouble because they have no respect for anything or anyone.
The lad who trashed my car, let's say the police catch him. Then what? He'll get a court summons and if he actually shows up he'll get a few hours community service, whereas I'm lumped with finding the money to repair his damage.

Having said all this, not a mention of parental responsibility.

Lack of facilities for kids!!??! !??? are you joking?
They have youth centres they trash them or burn them down (eg Gleadless youth centre was burnt down about a month ago). Kids these days have more entertainment they we care to imagine.....skate board park in Meersbrook Park, what happens itd spray painted and bottles are broken in it....tennis courts in Grave Pk and Meersbrook Park are trashed. I'm not into all this kids dont have anything to do. Their are about 250 football pitches in Sheffield, the Peak District is on our doorstep, there are climbing walls, cimemas, tenpin bowling alleys, sports centres with clubs eg swimming, tennis, badminton, archery, squash....kids don't have the mental stimulation to think outside of the box though, they have had XBox's, 200 plus TV channels, DVD players, hand held games, Play Stations, etc thrown at the for the last 10yrs, when it comes time for them to break away from their parents they can't think for themselves and get into there groups and start acting about.
I'm not saying all kids are trouble but a lot of them are too thick to think for themselves, they have no respect for there elders and the main aim to to act up and look good infront of their friends without consdiering the consiquenses of thier actions.
I've said it for a while now its up to responsible parenting, if kids are on the streets after 9pm at night they need to be accounted for. Parents should know where their 'little angels' are. If there are 'problem areas' we have vigilante groups to sort out the problems. You damage a car, steal property, vandalise etc you take a beating for it, i guarantee you within 18 months the streets would be safer places to be once the kids realised their were consiquences to their actions.
