Hi all. Im currently building a kennel for my two doggies but have come across a problem with the door.
Im not sure how to make it so that it will open and close when they walk in and out.
Im not very good with wood and im pretty skint right now so it needs to be cheap and easy (sounds like an old girlfriend of mine:hihi:) but effective.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance:):)

I don't think most kennels have a door because of this reason?

ISn't there some sort of swing hinge thingy you can buy say at B&Q?

Could you not install a dog flap into it rather than a door? Maybe you could pick a second hand one up from somewhere if you can't afford new?

I did consider a dog flap but the size of the door is pretty big so i cant find one made to fit.
I supose i could make one though.
Thanks for that and ill post a pik when its done:):)

i wouldnt put a door on it, so you can let fresh air in.

Couldn't you put some kind of wood across the top to protect rain/snow going inside.

Personally I'd make a large door that would enable a human to get in to clean inside, but close that with bolts or other strong fixings so that it's only for humans, then make a doggy sized opening that has a porch or some way of keeping rain and wind out (maybe even cover it with a hanging blanket or similar across the inside to act as a windbreak too).

I know that sounds like a lot of work, but that's just my personal choice.

Well ive already made an extra opening on hinges for cleaning and any puppie related emergencies. Its secured with 2 of those barrel type locks with a key. Ive made a tiny porch roof over the door but the hanging basket idea sounds great.
Itll be like their own little home.
Ive had a srounge around the shed and found some old wicker cane blinds. Would they do if i cut them to size?

I don't see why not- the chances are you'll spot things that you've not done the best way and change it all round at some point in the future anyway. Anything that will act as a wind break will do the job.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think ill give the wicker a try. See if its up to the job and the wind break idea has given me an idea or two.
Thanks again and ill post a pik of the finnished product.

Fantastic! You've made a really good job of that - any dog would be pround to use it - love the homely touches. (All they need now is the telly, the remote and a minibar).

i think you have done a great job, i like the hanging of a picture:loopy::hihi::hihi: what a spoilt dog.... only advice id give u is sit the kennel on bricks or something to keep it off the floor for when the weather gets bad... otherwiase id say it looks great mate! but your pleased with it??

katkin
15-09-2007, 16:24
Good thinking madowl, Id not spotted that -yes, it would be better raised from the floor a bit. Love the laminate flooring and the skirting board - it's brill. Maybe they'll need a doormat to wipe their paws on too!
We're hoping to start fostering for the Cats Protection League soon and are looking at what we need to construct a cat cabin and run - dont think CPL will let us give ours such homely touches, unfortunately.

Well I'm proper impressed, to say you not very good with wood,
you've done a super job, good advice to sit it on bricks,
when my hubby bulit me rabbit pen once
always remember he put that on bricks.
so the rain could run away and not soak into the wood.

Any pics with the residents.

Glad you all like it. Thanks for the adviceabout the brick Madowl, Catkin and MaryPoppins. I made sure its on bricks, they are hidden underneath the wooden skirting with about half inch ground clearance so when it rains the water is able to go under the kennel and out the side. Whats not shown clearly in the photos is its on an incline (and the previous tennant know sod all about laying patios:hihi:) so any rainwater that falls of the roof will drain away too.
xxhunniixx, it cost about £100 and an old wardrobe. The wood was quite cheap and i also used some reclaimed timber i had lying around. And of course ill make you one:)
Its big too. 8 foot by 3 1/2 foot (and im talking about the kennel before anyone starts:hihi:)

Here are the pics of them basking in their new home.

Your kennel is ace!!

It looks like youve just bought it!! My dogs would love it!!

I find it funny that youve put them a picture inside:hihi::hihi:

They look very happy with their kennel. Well done!!

PM me and let me know how you made it - I will get my fella to make me one for our dogs as when anybody comes around they jump all over em - our cross alsatian doesnt like very many people either so we have to send em outside - cant do this when its raining but could if they had a kennel.

Thats a fab kennel daddy. I need a similar house for my rabbits obviously a lot smaller and with a smaller door, which they can use in their run.

So if you do decide to take up animal house building give me a shout.

He is no longer a member of SF so I'm afraid that you can't, unless someone who knows him passes on his details.
