Dear Captain,
whilst sheffieldish is a dialect, It has not been standardised, and so the spelling is not fixed and as hard or easy as you like. Now interestingly, within sheffield, there are several dialects[mainly two], and being from the north of the city, and spending my adult life in the south of, I am often acutely aware of this.

When I was growing up we used to get sheffieldish quizzes all the time in hillsborough/loxley, but ask someone from totley/lodgemoor, I doubt they will even have heard of sutch a contrivence, if they knew about it hey would be embarrased that this kind of thing still goes on, especially when they couldn't get the gist

it dunt matter really a suppuas bur along wit demise of towd sayings, younger end dont seem to be able tu speak or understand their own dialect nawdays .... that dreadful "estuary english" seems to be creeping in ... i blame television (grins).

I have a brother in law in Sheffield that beats you all, even his kids have trouble at whats he's saying.

I lived on middlewood road (151) for the first 13 yrs of my life (1987-2000) then moved up to oughtibridge in 2000-2003 and then back down to middlewood in 2003 schools i attended are

marlcliffe primary on marlcliffe road where i now work
wisewood secondary on rural lane
bradfield on kirk edge road and now loxley college.

Ah wuh talkin' 'ow ah'd talk in mi sheffieldish accent.

it's not just the geordies who tag a "like" onto the end of every sentence. (only:- if I were saying it in a geordie accent, it'd have been transcribed as "leiyke" to differentiate it from a country yokel's "Loike")

(any-roo-ad, the barnsley accent is on'y a bit coarser ttan the strongest of sheffield dialects...)

if it's read with a yorkshire accent, it works.

the problem with the "flat" yorkshire (well, northern) vowels is that they don't translate from spoken to written form very well.

I have read books (particualrly by southerners) that have tried to give a sense of yorkshire but they just don't scan.

for example, a southerner I have read had translated the short "U" sound (Bus, gun) as "oo" now, to me, "OO" would be like in "shoot" which is a long sound. so that'd make "bus" come out as "boows".

any-roo-ad, shurrup pickin' spots, we' re all dooin' us best ter put wot we're sayin' inter't yorkshire, and a don't fink wi'r doo-in a bad job on'it!

nee-er mind wot dar sez, t'others understud worrit were wi wuh sayin! (sticks tongue out cheekily!)

( I think the secret to reading the reply i made, is not to give the sing-song up-rise at teh end of the words, (eg saying it as "ah no--- " levelly, rather than "ahr - noo-ah^- as the geordies would )
